Houston Community College Athletics?

Recommended Posts

One would have to believe they could build a pretty strong athletic program if they did things right...

The Houston Community College System board of trustees will vote Tuesday on a student fee that would enable it to add an intramural athletic program, with the possibility of elevating it to an intercollegiate program in the future.

Houston Community College students have been playing intramural basketball for a couple of years in a club sport league that includes some of the North Harris County / Montgomery County College District schools (now know as the Lone Star College System), such as Cy-Fair College, Montgomery College, Kingwood College and Tomball College, to name a few.

The Lone Star schools also compete with some teams from a club sport conference made of up community and private junior colleges in the San Antonio area.

Lamar State College-Port Arthur officials have been keeping a close eye on that development because we always are looking for non-conference dates that aren't halfway across the state like the schedule we played the first year of the program in 2004. Some of those schools now playing club sports eventually may move into intercollegiate competition. That will be good news from a logistical standpoint of travel expenses.

This year, Lamar State certainly won't miss the cost of all those five-hour bus trips to the Dallas area to play in the Metro Athletic Conference. None of the Seahawks' Region XIV dates will be more than a couple of hours away from PA.

HCC board approves student fee to fund athletic program

The Houston Community College System took a huge step towards establishing an intercollegiate athletic program when its board of trustees unanimously voted Tuesday to assess a student fee to fund an intramural program.

Under terms of the resolution, students at each of the system’s six campuses would be charged up to $6 extra per semester, effective in the spring of 2009. The fee is expected to bring in an estimated $224,000 per semester, money which would be spent entirely on the intramural program. An athletic director, coaches and other personnel would have to compensated by HCCS.

Because the fee won’t go into effect until next spring, the board voted to begin the intramural program that semester, instead of this fall. The athletic committee will meet Aug. 21 to set the fee amount, and the board will convene Aug. 28 to vote on that measure.

“It feels great,†said trustee Neeta Sane, chair of the athletic committee. “Students are excited, and we are basically doing what’s right for the students and in the best interests of HCC.â€

The initial program would have men’s and women’s basketball, soccer and volleyball.

The trustees also agreed that they would continue to examine the possibility of elevating the intramural program into an intercollegiate program.
