Woods in unbelievable... he's up 8 strokes with a couple of holes to go in the 3rd round.  it appears that having a couple of weeks to gear up for him hasn't helped Tiger's opponents.

He went ahead an birdied 18 for 3rd round 66.

My good friend Coop doesn't think Tiger is the best athlete in the world, name one better Coop.

OK Coop, you finally took a stand.

Now name the football player who is better than Tiger?

i have to agree with Coop on this... tiger is highly skilled at what he does, but i doubt he could hold his own on the football field, or the basketball court.  when i think of the best athletes in the world, i think of these guys who make all-state in 4 sports in high school, go on to play a couple of sports in college, and then move on to play some form of professional sports.  i know couch potatos that are good golfers.  it takes a large amount of skill and talent, but athletic ability is at most somewhat important in being good at golf.  it's more about coordination and instinct.

off the topic of my post, but to respond to one of your posts, federer got his tail handed to him the other day.  he might be losing his dominant grip a little.

i don't know if he's the BEST athlete in the world.  he's dominate in a game where fat, 50 year old smokers can win a major.  i wouldn't argue if you called him the most SKILLED athlete in the world, or even the most DOMINANT, however.

name one fat 50 year old smoker who has won a major...

At 46 Nicklaus winning the Masters was one of the greatest accomplishments in sports.

People underestimate how much practice it takes to do what these golfers are doing now.

Angel Cabrera.  He's only 38, but he's a fat smoker, and he won the U.S. open last year.  I'm not trying to knock golfers.  It's dang hard to be successful at the game, but i tend to think of the best athletes as those who play sports involving some contact (or at least running).  is tiger a great athlete?  absolutely.  are all golfers?  not really.  skilled athletes?  sure, why not.  There are different type of athletes... games like golf, bowling, etc. involve more skill than either strength or stamina.  to me when i think of the best athletes in the world, i tend to lean towards the athletes who are playing more physical sports.  this, of course, is just my opinion*

*but i'm right  ;D ;D ;D

That's difficult, because each sport requires different skill sets, but i just don't feel that golf is a true testament to athleticism.  professional football players need speed, strength, skill, and stamina. the same goes for basketball, soccer, hockey, and many other sports.  tiger is a tremendous golfer, and he's in great shape.  i won't argue these points.  i just don't see how the best player at a sport that doesn't involve running, jumping, stamina, or contact can be considered the best athlete in the world.

because there are so many sports, with so many great athletes... do you go with someone who's a great olympian, a champion decathlete?  do you go with the best quarterback or running back?  do you go with a great soccer player who can run for 90 minutes straight while doing things with his feet that nobody else in the world can do?  what about the best point guard, who can dribble, pass, and shoot as well as anyone else while playing a full game without a sub.  maybe you can even argue for the world's fastest man.  if you picked anybody who fit into any one of these categories, i probably wouldn't try to dispute you.  the fact that you've picked a highly skilled athlete, who dominates his sport would normally make me agree with you as well.  the problem is that you've picked a sport where the athlete doesn't have to do anything more physically exerting than walk a mile or two over several hours while swinging a long stick at a ball that isn't even moving.  that's not all that athletic in my opinion.  what tiger woods does is amazing.  his skill level is beyond that of anyone in the history of golf, and his mental edge is staggering.  i agree that he is the most skilled athlete in the world.  he's arguably the most dominant athlete in the world at his sport.  i just don't think he's the best athlete in the world.  i don't have to name one in particular to state that opinion.  i feel that the top pros in several sports are better athletes than him.  there are athletes in every sport who can run faster, jump higher, and hit harder than him.  there are athletes in every sport who could probably beat him at every sport outside of golf.  how is he a better athlete than them?
