Faith Family vs Yates

Recommended Posts

I am pulling for Yates but I’ve had a feeling the Region 2 team would be the team to beat due to being so battle tested.  I hope I’m wrong and the Lions wear them down like they have almost all teams they’ve faced.   I do think this should be the de facto championship game.  Decatur has the ability to slow the game down and maybe hang around and pull off an upset in a low scoring affair.  But I think either of these teams losing to the winner of the other semi-final would be a considerable upset.

Faith Family in the UIL state tournament is a joke.  The head coach was the head coach at Cedar Hill and FF offered him 6 figures to come over and allowed him to bring his whole staff.  Guess what...Cedar Hill players followed.  This is why you havent heard from Cedar Hill lately.  It is fitting that FF and Yates have to play each other and a sign of the sad sad state of UIL basketball.  And that is before you get to Madison being in the 3A tournament which is an even bigger joke.  HISD and DISD use their open enrollment status and “magnet programs” to manipulate their enrollments.  FF has about 200 kids in the school.....but 10 of them just happen to be good enough to get to the 4A state tournament?  Please.  It is becoming a joke what all is allowed and a shame.  It is ruining high school basketball.

I think many of us have stated pretty much the same views over the past several years.  Even though my Tigers have been the standard the last few years, I still have fealt that overall a school such  as Silsbee having to compete with some of these big city “small” schools is not quite an equal playing field.

I am not a fan of charter schools for reasons that go way beyond basketball.  There are a myriad of ways in which they are hurting public education.  I would say that when the highest ranking official in education in our country is an extremely vocal advocate for these charter schools, it’s not likely to change any time soon.

But that’s a different discussion for a different board.   Your point is a good one and well taken.

When I seen the name pop up in the TABC rankings, I knew something was fishy. I thought Deion Sanders had a new school like Prime Prep. I didnt know they would be a le to play in the UIL. Everyone remembers a few years ago when Mark Cuban hand selected an AAU team to play at Bridgeport. 4A is a middle ground I guess. A charter school of 200 has no reason playing in a 4A UIL tourney. They are like a junior college with all the recruiting. I actually hope Yates win to keep the title in Region 3 and shut down the nonsense in Dallas. Yates should combine with Kashmere and go to 5A.

I think Decatur might surprise some people and it might not be as big of an upset as some think if they win it all. They have some length, play very solid defense and are well coached. Similar to Argyle teams of the past. But one difference is I think they will push the ball and look for easy baskets more in transition than your typical walk it up the court and run your half court sets. Yates/FF May negate that though. Should be interesting.

That’s what I’ve heard (similar to Argyle).  When those type teams take care of the ball and control tempo, tends to really frustrate teams that like to run and gun.

True.  You cant argue with their success.  One thing i have always felt  is that style also leads to closer games with teams that you may be better than as well, leaving the possibility of a defeat.  I guess what i am saying is they arent normally going to run away from good teams and get a big lead.  Whereas a team that plays like we do does just that many times.  The question is of course which suits your team better and which style do you have more confidence in.

Exactly.  Keep the game low scoring and give yourself a puncher’s chance.  You’re may not be able to run away from more athletic teams but you can hit a shot at the end to upset them.

Yates is a good team but they are here because Silsbee self destructed in the second half last Saturday.  Oak Cliff is a tested team and have played a much tougher schedule and a postseason that's arguably tougher as well.  The middle is not going to be porous like it was against the Tigers so outside shooting will be critical.  If they are shooting well it's still no guarantee but if they aren't they won't win.

It's a "career" magnet school (please, I may have been born at night, but not last night!)  against a "charter" school.  I tend to go with the lesser of two evils which is Yates.  But then I'll be pulling for the winner of the Decatur - Liberty Hill game in the final because those schools are from towns.  And 4A schools should be from towns.  One high school districts.  You know?  Like Sour Lake or Bridge City or Lumberton or even Silsbee.

Ummmh the same could be said for  the yates vs silsbee game last year .. yates was up for most of the game last year with their best player being restricted.

And yates played in a national tournament they beat powerhouse Christ the king out of New York. They broke a record in that tournament for points being scored. They also beat a powerhouse school out of St. Louis.

And the argument for inner city  public schools goes both ways. A lot of kids that are zoned to yates , Wheatley , kashmere etc.. don’t go there. A lot of the elite players that are zoned to those schools attend charter , home and private schools. That’s why those schools are now better than the public schools.

Who ever wins this game . WILL destroy the winners of this first game..

You seem confident it will be a blowout. So set the line and give me Decatur and the points.

No go on Liberty Hill.

It’s funny how these slow, unathleitc, half court teams like Brock, Ponder, and Argyle don’t look the part yet seem to keep winning championships.

Decatur will give Yates/FF a game. I will be shocked if they don’t.

Welp Decatur didn’t do their part. Ugly game. Good luck to the remaining teams.

    • Funny how “MAGA” is considered a bad thing…. The MAGA crowd….etc…. Whoever doesn’t want to make America Great should leave.
    • That's an interesting take, but considering that an incumbent enjoys a HUGE advantage historically, I think Covey came pretty close to an upset. I don't care one way or the other - the biggest reason being that I live in Hardin County. But I have to think the Trump endorsement got Covey that close in the first place. His only recognition was on a very local level, virtually unheard of before the Trump endorsement. Otherwise, he probably would've lost by thousands of votes instead of a few hundred. Just my observation.
    • I think the interesting point is this… Trump backed candidates do better when Trump is on the ballot. Back in March Covey was up by 3%, and that skirt from Jasper pulled about 10%… and most people believed that her voters would go directly to Covey. Conventional wisdom was that Covey would be up by 10-12 points if all things went according to the pattern from March. That just didn’t happen. Typically turnout is lower in runoffs than in the primaries, and my guess is that Phelan had fewer votes this time around than last, but covey had WAY fewer votes. A friend of mine has been watching a similar runoff in central texas, and the results were similar. The MAGA guy just didn’t turn out the votes this May.    My opinion is that a large portion of the support these Trump guys are just that…. Trump supporters. They’ll vote down ticket according to MAGA directives when Trump is on the ballot, but when they can’t vote Trump, they just don’t show up at all.

    • Then you should have known lots of people said the exact same thing when the alcoholic Democrat Ann Richards was elected way way back in the day. Texas has become redder and redder ever since. People, especially blacks, are waking up and realizing the Marxist Democrats are destroying them. Feel free to hold your breath waiting on your dream to happen though. That would be fun to watch, LOL.
