JRidge Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 Recently found out that former Sweeny Head Baseball Coach, now PNG new head Baseball Coach Scott Carter who lead Sweeny to a 2012 State appearance submitted his resume for the Ozen H.S. Head Baseball Coaching vacancy this past year. It was noted that he was very interested in the job but was not contacted for an interview or even received a return call. Mr. Carter won District 24-3a Coach of the year Honors after winning 3 consecutive District Titles. This disturbs me to the utmost because these kids need to receive the best education & coaching as much as any other school! Not taking anything from Ozen's current coach but we should always hire the most qualified person for the job! I'm seriously wondering if someone or some people are secretly wishing the demise of this school and it's athletic programs. I personally remember MaGee saying he was bringing Mr. Carter in to be the coach but next thing I know we were given someone different! I am pissed to find out that people have no regards in doing the right thing for our kids. That is the straw that broke the camels back for me! Quote

I'm not going to pretend I know what kind of coaches get hired over there.. But do you seriously think that... JRidge Posted March 30, 2014 Author Report Posted March 30, 2014 It doesn't add up at all. The talent is there, speed, strenth & athleticism, transforming them into baseball players is what has to happen. Coaches have to be able to develope their players and their talents, project their positions and have a working plan for developing it's program for that year & years to come. Pitching mechanics, fielding & hitting mechanics all need adjustments and coaches have to able to help their players in this area. A proven coach would do wonders for some of the talent that is there and I don't mean any disrespect to anyone but these kids would like to have an opportunity to play after high school as well. I say give them the best opportunity to do so and if noone does then that is sabbotage when they have the opportunity to do so and don't! Quote
Chester86 Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 Scary athleticism, but I have seen Central and Ozen both play. It appeared that it was more an intramural sport, or something to do after basketball season. I call it the University of Ozen because that campus is massive. I personally don't think a true baseball coach would get much support from the administration. It would be a long-term project, and I just don't think they would get the time or assistance to see it prosper. Beaumont should have at least one dominant high school for baseball, but it seems most kids that really love baseball transfer to Kelly or Legacy. Quote

Ozen has and will be receiving more kids who are interested in playing college ball the next few years! I've personally coached several of these kids who can actually play but needs continued development. I have a Freshman & Sophomore who start for the varsity and one more coming in next year and they have me to help work on their skill levels but putting together good practice plans and watching for small things in a kids game to help them become better has to happen daily. Tight games or won by strategy and execution, and execution comes from repetitiveness practice the proper way! Ozen's varsity has speed, and maybe only 3 guys who can't run well, and putting the ball in play and stealing bases go hand and hand with speed. I just hope we get things together so that all of these kids can reach their full potential. AthleticSupporter - Jock 1 Quote
pob357 Posted April 3, 2014 Report Posted April 3, 2014 a quality coach should have been hired and still needs to be hired. new staff too. But really the skill set they have in little league(supposedly) is not transferring to high school. face it they don't play the caliber of opponent they face outside of Beaumont north end and spindle top. players need the earn a spot not give it to them because who is helping the team. I saw Ozen play, wow. the staff needs to go. It seems there is no knowledge of the game. This is not Spindle top. this is high school. Ozen needs a real high school baseball coach and knowledgeable assistants. Hebert alum are killing Ozen athletics. no disrespect JRidge. Quote

I agree on several things and the competition at Spindletop isn't stiff. My son who is a Freshman hasn't played since he made an "F" on his report card two weeks ago. I think he had the big head for the moment! My son who's a Sophomore had to sit down the last two games for being disobediant. They start for their team because they can play but are still learning how to be more consistent. Hopefully Ozen can pull it all together! Quote
DP#1FAN Posted April 4, 2014 Report Posted April 4, 2014 TEA is looking REAL hard at B.I.S.D. I would look for some action to take place there very soon. Quote
Bigcam2903 Posted April 4, 2014 Report Posted April 4, 2014 I'm a basketball guy, but I know a few things about baseball. Size doesn't matter & it is a skilled sport. You can't pick it up & put it down like many other sports. The problem with Ozen is the same problem we have at our little leagues. Too many Coaches seeking athletes & not teaching skills. My young Son played @ Amelia & Spindle Top & I saw the same things being done at both, not enough teaching or discipline. There aren't enough quality Coaches around to teach, develop, & mold kids. The MESS we call baseball @ Central & Ozen actually started in little league & has morphed in HS & now magnified with the Circus BISD is displaying. The saying goes " the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" Every Coach your child plays for May not be the best, but if he/she were taught the proper skills as a young kid, we would still see them shine because Players make plays in whatever sport they play. I'm Done Bigcam, it's a shame because I always try to improve my craft in coaching everyday and every year. I try to prepare every kid I coach for the next level of baseball and have had lots of success in doing so but when I announce that I also give training lessons at a very reasonable price to help enhance kids skill level, most prefer to spend their money and time on other things. This sport is an investment probably more so than any other but sometimes I don't think people care to realize this! SMH Bigcam2903 1 Quote
