  1. Coach, you should be pround. Next to our parents, there are few other individuals that had the fortitude to slap us on the side of the head when we didn't answer "yes sir", pull our hair to tell us "get a hair cut", yell at us if we didn't have our "shirt tail tucked in" and... pat us on the back for a job well done. Your players will thank you one day for helping mold them into the men they have become...even if it took a lot of sweat, a few tears, and couple of a gallons of puke to get it done. It was all worth it.
  2. Are you the guy? The former player that Danaher speaks of in his interview? Good post, sounds like someone with Phill's ear! I heard the same from someone regarding his intent for the PNG job and reasons. I played for him in the late 80s. Graduated in 1988.
  3. Imagine coaching somewhere for 24 years...coaching both your sons...and having a community that used to worship you. Now imagine a community that lashes out at you (who by the way is the winningest active coach in Texas, and #3 all-time) for having an 8-4 season...the first season with four losses since 1987. Now imagine that after all this success, you still have not won a state championship and you're community has started taking you for granted. You have around 8 -10 years left in your career to attain what you set our for 32 years before. And you start to realize...it may not happen. Here. Now imagine you are this same coach and you have an opportunity to take over a program that has experienced major success over the years. The community has the athletes, the community support, state of the art facilities...and possibly better odds to build a title contender. You request confidentiality because you are not trying to get your school in a bidding war, you are just trying to protect your athletes from hearing anything pre-mature. You want them to hear any news from your mouth. Then one day you take a call from a reporter regarding your application to another school. You tell the reporter your heart is with the program you built. The same program that fed your family, sent your kids to college and elevated your career to the coaching elite. How do you think a coach with any class would answer reporter's questions regarding your application? They would answer the same way Danaher did. He has already, in detail, laid out exactly what would have to happen for him to accept an offer from PNG. And it has nothing to do with bolstering his salary. He's a coach. He just wants a state title. We need to support his quest for a title by making PNG a part of it.
  4. There is no competition here. It's Danaher, period. If, for whatever reason, Danaher does not accept an offer from PNG, the competition will begin with the remaining candidates. But...until Danaher makes his decision, there is no competition.
  5. Well...It's not an opinion, it's a fact. He wants a state title. I've explained the situation a few other times on this board. It's that simple. PS His wife is Assistant Superintendant in Charge of Curriculum.
  6. That's the best idea I've heard on here! I would imagine most Indians could care less how they debate. If we were hiring a debate team coach...perhaps. Past performance is indicative of future success. Not true. Many good coaches just haven't been given the shot yet. To The Young Coach If an assistant coach (which I assume you are talking about) has demonstrated his ability to lead a successful offense in a program somewhere else, he will eventually get his chance. It will be a smaller school, but talent eventually rises to the top. It's a hard pill to swallow for a 4A school to hire an assistant. It's an even bigger decision when you have a high profile school that has garnered this much publicity (unwanted) in their search. I may be wrong, but I believe it's rare to find a large 4A or 5A school turn their program over to someone who hasn't had executive experience. I use the word "executive" because it's similar to the president of a company that answers to a Board (in our case a school board.) You want someone who has dealt with that level of responsibility. Now, in our situation, we have an interested executive that has not only satisfied his current Board, but has increased share price every year for 24 years. I would think this is the Executive that would be chosen to make our company profitable again.
  7. That's the best idea I've heard on here! I would imagine most Indians could care less how they debate. If we were hiring a debate team coach...perhaps. Past performance is indicative of future success.
  8. I "speculate" that he would like more money for retirement! Either that, or he would like to go back to LH and say, "this is what PN-G is offering me, can you match that?" Hey Young Coach, do you know how old Vance is? He looks to be about the same age as Danaher. From what I'm seeing and hearing, the top contenders for PNG HC/AD are Garrett, Vance, Danaher. I'm not sure how old Vance is, but I'm guessing early 60's? Same as Danaher....both ready for retirement after they get their best three years of salary. Of course...that's just my "speculation". I could be wrong. I still say the best two candidates for PN-G; somebody that will be there for 15+ years and continue the honor, pride and tradition that the Indians pride themselves upon, are Garrett and Faircloth. To The Young Coach Danaher is not applying at PNG to boost his retirement. I know...because I recruited him for this position. He is currently in an area that has a decreasing population base, and, in my opinion, changing demographics that are not favorable for producing a state champion. He wants a state title before he retires. Period. There's no hidden agenda. And hopefully he can make it happen here. He plans on coaching for at least eight more years.
  9. Here is a clip of Calallen's offense...
  10. You're right. I've seen them succeed against teams with much better talent. Very regimented and disciplined are the best descriptions. This time of year his team is going through boot camp. The purpose is to teach them to think on their toes when they are exhausted. Memory lapses are punished immediately. When one athlete makes a mistake, the whole team gets punished. And weak athletes (both mind and body) are culled from the group.
  11. I have to say I am partial to Danaher. I went through his program in the late 80s and have been a family friend for 20 years. He doesn't just build great teams, he teaches boys to be men. If he comes here, our atheletes better be ready to be participate in probably one of the most brutal off season programs around. His teams are definitely never out conditioned.
  12. Well, if that's the case, it's a good thing the applicant list got released. Now LH will know he is putting his hat in the ring for another job. Just think, if the list had never been released he wouldn't have had a bargaining chip. ;D ;D ;D From what I hear Danaher was the applicant that asked that they try and keep the list from the media. If true then it should say a little about his intentions. As far as Vance and is offense is concerned, PNG has been a run, run, pass, punt offense for so long now, I think alot of people are leary of running even more. I agree you can run to a state title if you are mixing it up and play good defense, but we had that here and it just wasn't getting it. I think we want something a little different. But if they do hire Vance I won't argue with the sucess! Danaher intended to keep it confidential from his athletes. If offered the position, he wanted to break the news to his team, not the local newspaper. His Superintendant was informed of his intentions before he applied. Danaher adapts his offense to the athletes in his program. If talent exists at the QB position he has been know to run a shotgun/spread offense. That's part of the reason his programs have been so successful.
  13. I think we need to focus our attention on the pro, cons and possibilities that the top two candidates can offer Port Neches. With all the rumors about "why" the candidates applied, it would be great to discuss their experience and exactly what these candidates can do for our program.
