1. [Hidden Content] Update from Galveston County Daily News
2. Just heard from my son as he got home from school. Wheatley was disqualified for using an ineligible player. Waltrip (whom Wheatley beat last week) will take their place. It is very unfortunate for all concerned. The kids at Wheatley that practiced all week and had the rug yanked out from under them, The Kids at Waltrip that thought their season was over, and haven't practiced til today, and to us here in Friendswood that go into a playoff game with a heavy advantage that, though not of our doing, just feels wrong. Even if we win, it will feel like kissing your sister. In any case though, you have to enforce the rules. Even if it causes some strange circumstances.
3.

Here is one consistency I have noticed with the UIL, they tend to try and not screw a team multiple times in a row.  Case in point.  Dayton got boned when they had to move to 20-4A, lets be honest, must have sucked for them.  These past two years, Livingston had to grab their ankles.  Next realignment, I would not expect either team to get stuck in 20-4A.  It will most likely be Barbers Hill, or (assuming the normal craziness from the UIL) a team like GCM or Baytown Lee.
what wrong with 20 4A
Nothing is wrong with 20-4A except that its a long butt drive for teams like Dayton and Livingston.  Every week they are driving over an hour to play a game.
I grew up  in Nacogdoches, it was 30 minutes to Lufkin, but every other drive was at least 1-2 hours(Longview, Tyler, Marshall etc), and some were more (3-4 hours to Texarkana). We thought it was normal. I too am now spoiled to have every game within a 30 minute drive! Seriously though,it does cut way down on the fan support for visiting teams.
4. I will go out on a limb. I am calling an upset of Angleton by Manvel this Friday! That would actually be bad news for the Region, because it would make Angleton more focused, and stop any overconfidence from setting in.
5. From what I have seen this season, Manvel is by far the best team right now of all the contenders for the last spot. Santa Fe beat us in the pouring rain, with our top RB out, and we played poorly. Manvel played us to 4 Overtimes last week, and looked better than anybody but Angleton, better even than Dawson. Manvel has a lot of talent, but has had problems getting it put together til late, Santa Fe started off with easy opponents, got hot, upset us in the rain, and has since fell apart. Manvel is by far and away the team that should get the playoff berth. If Manvel gets in, 24-4A could conceivably go 4-0 in the first round of playoffs.
6. I think Dayton and Angleton would be a good matchup, But I think that eventually Angleton's speed would get to you for some big plays. They have 3 of the 4 runners off the 4A state champion 4 x 100 relay team from last year in their starting backfield. I actually thought that our lines were better on both sides of the ball than Angleton's, but not by a lot. The Athletes behind those lines though, WOW! We've got to worry about just getting to the Playoff's, we don't have a week to take a breath. Santa Fe is this week, and they are Undefeated, having beaten Texas City last week. Personally I think the winner of the Santa Fe - La Marque takes the 4th spot in our district. Assuming of course that Dawson, and Friendswood manage to take care of their business.
7. War in Da Wood! Come early and get a seat for what should be one heck of a game. My Prediction..... Triple overtime and the last one standing wins! Tx Canes, Is Cole OK or is he out for this game? Big difference in facing Angleton with him or without him
8. Nice to read a post with some class to it... fatdaddy, sure you're on the correct board? LOL, Yes at least for this last week. After watching the Mustangs last year, I really don't think we are as great this year. But we are still plenty good, and should make the playoffs. Having said that, I was surprised that Ned had as bad a night as they did. Historically they play hard, and keep it close. Things just got out of hand, and we were actually commenting in the stands that it seemed everything was bouncing our way. Murphy was a Mustang fan tonight. There is a fine line to walk: To offer respect to a team on a terrible night, but not to gloat, and certainly not pity. The effort those kids continued to give in the face of embarrassment deserves better than that. I think some of our readers lose track sometimes that These are kids giving their blood sweat and tears. Supporting my team, should in no way give me any reason to belittle or deride any other team, no matter how good, or bad they are. OK, so much for the feel good. Good luck Ned and Dayton, I'll be checking on you throughout the year.
9. Tough game Ned. Bad luck all week just rolled into Friday. We (Friendswood) are not as good as this game might suggest, and Ned is not as bad as it might suggest either. We had a really good game, and ALL the bounces went our way. Add that to a 3rd string QB and it was a slaughter. I have been on the other side, it ain't' fun. I wish you luck the rest of the year, and truly hope none of your guys are hurt. Good luck. Ya ll have an awesome kicker though, wish we had him.
10. TxCanes, Hadn't heard that about the cancelled swap. I'll talk to some people this week and find out for sure. With our luck, they ran out of money during the expansion, and decided the stadium improvements were what they could cut the easiest. Hope not.
11. Yup, visiting stands are still the same for now. The last phase of construction, after the season is over, is an expansion of the stadium. The visitors will become the home side, and be expanded considerably. Same theory as Dayton, but Not quite to the degree that Dayton did it. And yes I remember both of the double overtime games. That's what I meant when I said that Ned gave us all we wanted and then some. Of course Nederland might say that we gave them all they wanted, and a little more. In any case, how is y'alls new QB coming along? Do y'all have a lot of size or speed? I would say we have good size and decent speed. In fact I would say we are good in all areas, just not great in any. But remember, in the dictionary next to the term "trick play" is a picture of Friendswood coach Steve Van Meter, Who never met a play he wouldn't try once. lol.
12. Friendswood looked kinda flat this past weekend against Brazoswood. Bwood had a very strong D line, and our young QB had happy feet in the first half, looked our of synch and overthrew a number of passes. 2nd half saw some adjustments, and they got back in the game somewhat. Just too little, too late. I have the feeling this will be a tough week of practice and they will have some "improved intensity" this week. We need another good game to get ready for our district, and Ned has historically given us all we want and then some. Having said that, I truly expect us to be back on our game this week. Fwood by 10. WARNING! get to the game early. Friendswood high school is in shambles due to a huge new construction/expansion project. Parking will be a nightmare. if you are coming late, be prepared to hunt parking in the neighborhoods. It is gonna be bad for all home games this year. The price of progress I guess.
13. Ploch is a beast!, no doubt about it. Great night running, no so good throwing. When he was the primary weapon, Dayton was moving the ball consistantly. In the third qt, FW made adjustments that forced Ploch to hand off or throw, and it really cramped their offensive output. Meatzold for FW (QB), had a good, but not great night. We have been spoiled by 40 yard ropes thrown by Karam for 3 years, because Meatzold is accurate, but his passes have a lot more arc on them. It gives defenders a lot more time to react. His short to medium game, and running were all good. Cole (RB #11) had a great game, running and catching. Dayton did a great job adjusting to stop the run after the first drive, taking away the easy counter trap with the pulling guard out of the shotgun. Forced us to do some different things. FW is really more of a team effort right now. Not much in the way of superstars. On another note, how is Nederland looking this year? I know they lost thier QB for the year, but how are they doing overall? They come to visit us on the 18th. Long trip for a tough tough game.
14. Great game Bronco's! Closer than we liked. Am impressed with Ploch's running, quite a freaking freight train when he starts moving. Throwing is a little hit or miss, but I would expect that to get better. We had 5 turnovers, not happy with that, but our D really played pretty well. We have a younger team that doesn't have the stars that we had last year, but they seem to really work well as a TEAM. I know y'all are in the same boat there. Several turnovers on both sides were from guys trying for extra yardage and exposing themselves a bit. I can accept those a little better, but still not good. Even though we let up a little in the 4th quarter, and almost got bit, I was mostly impressed by the effort on both sides. If they both continue playing like that, they will both be playin postseason again. Here's to seeing y'all again in December, Good luck till then. PS. Tell NED to pack heavy, they come see us in 2 weeks (barring Hurricane of course).
15. In Dayton, visitors side, Up high and by the band. By the way, nice stadium Dayton, maybe one day our stadium will be so nice. Atta boy Friendswood Mustangs!
16. Hate to quote myself, but i am curious to have my question considered. Can anyone help with this? Here is Complete team history . [Hidden Content] Friendswood went to 11 man in 1952. Played in a state title game in 1973, beat Hooks with Billy Sims. Since the Mid 90's have been consistently good, and occasionally great. Coach Van Meter is one of the great innovators in the Houston area of the Spread Offense. Figured out that we probably could not toe to toe with La Marque and Texas City, and tried something different. By the way, Van Meter played on the state title team in 1973. He really does have a clue to what he is doing, it just depends on the group of kids he has as to how successfull we are from year to year. Also, we have beaten Dayton three years in a row. Got a good feeling about this year. Go Mustangs!!! And by the way, 'Dude Abides', How do you like crow served? fried or raw on the wing? I will take some oven roasted if we lose, but you get a heaping platefull if Dayton goes down!
17. Nacogdoches ranked #40. LOL. My hometown boys are almost relevant again. Haven't been to the playoffs since 1992 (17 yrs). Maybe, just maybe, they can make it this year. Go for it Dragons.
18. Lake Travis last year could have beat any team in the state, 5A or not. That Longview beat Allen just emphasises the point. LT beat us (Friendswood) and looked like they were on a Sunday stroll. Then did the same thing to Longview. And we were beating teams in the 2nd and 3rd round just as soundly. The very top (5 to 10) 4A programs could easily compete with the best 5A teams. I think though, that the falloff in 4A is much faster, lots of 5A teams are almost at Katy and Allen's level, but only a handfull of 4A on any given year.
19. Friendswood has dominated in two scrimmages, vs Clear Brook, and Ball. Yes, Ball is probably in a down year, but Brook is picked to make the playoffs in a fairly tough 5A district. Friendswood is already operating very effectively, they are smooth! Looking at history, the Mustangs seem to hit their stride a little quicker every year than Dayton. We have played the Bronco's as a 1st game opponent for several years now, and have beaten them every game, yet Dayton has had actually more success in the postseason than we have. Some of that is because you have to be a bada$$ just to get out of our district (La Marque, Texas City, Angleton, and now Pearland Dawson and Manvel), and some of it is that Dayton just peaks a little later than we do. I don't think that either team has faced anybody like they will this Friday. We play each other because we both think we are one of the best in the State, and we want to play somebody else who lives at that level, to challenge ourselves and see how it turns out. I will still say Friendswood by 10, because I think we have more of our kinks worked out already, and no injuries yet. It would not surprise me at all to face the Bronco's later in the year, and here's hoping we do. But...Y'all better have some DB's that have a clue as to what they are doing! Good luck this season after Friday. GO MUSTANGS!
20. One thing I think we can all agree on. This it the best year for QB's in Texas possibly ever! Green, TR, GG, Jacob Karam, Beaver, Highsmith from Hightower, Russel Shepperd, and several from the DFW area whose names I don't even remember! This seems to be a direct result of several things. 1. The growth of the Spread Offense in both collage and High school. 2. The growth of 7 on 7 programs that let the skill players hone skills all summer. 3. The explosion of Little League programs that simply did not exist 20 years ago. Of course the popularity of High School ball continues to grow across the nation. In parts of the country it now approaches the popularity it has traditionally held here in Texas. I think we will continue to see growth in High school skills in Texas and other areas. Young QB's are being identified early on in Junior high, and being groomed by offensive minded coaches. Get ready for a yearly argument on Whose QB is best.
21. That may work in some Districts, but try to come out of our district doing that. We have LaMarque, Texas City, Friendswood, Angleton, and now Pearland Dawson and Manvel. We are fans of the 4 teams per district setup. A really good team in our district is going to be beaten at least once no matter what, and some very good teams will have several losses. The 4 team bracket is a chance for some good teams to get out of district and prove themselves against some different teams. What I do not like it the fact that we have 8 teams in our district, and the Sugerland district (Lamar Consolidated, Terry, Richmond Foster etc.) only has 5 teams. Only 1 team stays home. Why put 8 in one, and 5 in another that are within easy driving distance? I understand some of the East and especially West Texas alignment problems, But within Houston Metro? That is DUMB.
22. Good luck Dayton, Bring home a state title. Enyoy the trip and the experience. Nothing quite so special as a highschool Football playoff run in Texas. Especially for teams/communities that dont do it all the time. Have a safe trip, Godspeed, and best wishes from the Friendswood Mustangs. Fatdaddy
23. Good luck Bronco's. Bring home a title. There is nothing quite as fun and special as a highschool football playoff run in Texas. Especially when it is a team/town that doesn't do it all the time. Enjoy the trip and the experiences. These kids will be telling their kids about the great Dayton team of 08. Be safe, Godspeed, and best of wishes from the Friendswood Mustangs. Fatdaddy
24. I am originally from Nacogdoches, and know all about The Longview, Lufkin, and Tyler powerhouse teams. But having seen LT in action against my Friendswood......It won't even be close. LT is like Novacain. You don't even know its working, and then you look up and the surgery is over and you have been cut up to the tune of 50+ points and you cant even remember how All those points got there. Check out Friendswood Def coaches take. [Hidden Content]
25. *sigh* We defiantly got hammered. They were the better team. We caught no breaks and made mistakes ourselves, but it would have only made it look a little better. They still would have won. That QB is so big that he hurt us as much running the ball as passing it. We had no answer. I did think that we should have tried some more trick plays etc early, but in essence the game was out of hand by the end of the 1st half. Gautreax dropped 3 balls he should have caught, Jacob threw about 4 he should not have, and Cole fumbled on the first play after we stopped them on a 4th down early in the 2nd Qt. We did have an awesome tailgate party before the game, More food than we could eat. Or give away. In any case we have had a great year. We will be back with most of our offense next year (sans Karam and Gautreaux). We know what we need to do. See ya'll next year Region III.
