1. This Newton squad is the most schizophrenic bunch I have seen at Newton in many, many years. The talent is there, but the want to at times is sorely missing. Coach Westbrook on Monday asked me what I thought about the game against Anahuac and I told him when there are 5 offensive lineman standing at the line of scrimmage watching 6 opponents tackle the ball carrier outside, you have a BIG problem with want to. He agreed. I don't look for us to go past two rounds in the playoffs and that is being kind. Could be one and done.

3. It will be a long drive, but one I wouldn't miss. Emotional trip, but looking forward to a good game. There's got to be a good place to eat somewhere in route. Good luck to both squads.

5. Newton's game has come around some since the first of the season, but still got some kinks to work out to be a good ball club. Anahuac will be a big challenge especially at their house. I think Newton will play with some intensity and bring a win home with them. Close Newton 28 Anahuac 22.
6. Newton had the services of Sam Force Collins for 55 years. He started his 56th this year but only done one game. He said he just felt it was time. He was attentive to both teams on the field and was never a homer in my opinion. He told the story of the game as well as the kids playing the game. His seats are behind me in the reserved seats and he had to hunt for his seat the other night because he had never sat in it. He will be missed by many multiple generations of families that have played at Newton. He called the games for sons, dads, and even I'm sure granddads that have played there.

9. Going into the fourth quarter behind two touchdowns, not good. Newton had been playing lackluster ball with no heart. Something must have clicked as the entire team seemed to catch fire and come at Woodville. Scored once, scored twice, including two two point conversions, then big hit on Woodville busted play and recovered fumble, game over. Exciting Newton Eagle football again. This was the first time there appeared to me to be a team heart. Maybe it took pushing them to the wall. I just hope they found what they have been missing. Good game Newton Eagles. Tough loss for Woodville.
10. We have more in common than it seemed. Defense definitely has got to step up. People will be people as always. Ultimately it's up to the young men on the field and the coaches on the side line, the rest of us will just be fans with an opinion. :D
11.

Can they Rebound?
Why do you continuously attempt to measure a team that is one week removed from losing the definition of NEWTON, TX?  Last week the varsity practiced a total of 6 hours that was spread out over the course of 4 days. Please let the “boys” find themselves and figure out what’s what before people throw them under the bus with all the criticism. They will be fine. Without a doubt they will “bounce back.” Find something else to do besides writing meaningless and degrading posts about a team you supposedly played for. Where is your team pride? Where is your dedication?
Remove the rose colored glasses and look. I've seen many, many Eagle teams in the past and this one has had problems from the get go. The defense(and I use that term lightly) has been non existent for two years now. You can not be an outstanding team without having a good defense. The only game this team has shown up for was the Silsbee game. I don't always agree with SouthArise but they have every right to post on this board without your approval and continued attempt at being the all everything voice of Newton. Blindly following does not a leader make. If you want the "boys" to continue to be "boys", protect them all you can and give them candy at the end of the game. If you want the "boys" to become young men, expect them to stand up and be counted, as I do. I have 43 years of Newton athletic dedication, how many you got?
12. The question for years wasn't would Newton make the playoffs, but how far in the playoffs would they go. This year I see a rough road ahead for this team. I don't think they can be predicted. Plenty of capable athletes that seem to be not playing to their fullest strengths. Now this can be from the loss of long time coach, not playing together, or many other things too numerous to list, including a defense that has been underachieving for two years now. These kids have to dig deep in tradition and put it all together with the help of the current coaches or it's all over. I for one am uncomfortable with the wait till next year scenario. Third in district would probably be a good guess, but who knows.

14. Woodville does always play Newton tough. The game is in Woodville, another plus for Woodville. Newton is in disarray on both sides of the ball with the defense seeming to play more poorly each game. Woodville has a better chance to win than they have had in years. A tossup in my opinion.
15. Wrong place, wrong time for all this.
16. ECBucsMom I also wanted to let you know that MS. Mona Barbay and her daughter Kelly were in attendance at the game and I'm sure very much appreciated the touching playing of Amazing Grace at halftime as well as the large cross formed by your drill team. A class act all the way. Again good luck the rest of the season.
17. I've not heard this. If it is true I hope they do catch the person(s) responsible. IMO it would take a petty, cowardly, gutless individual to attack anyone in this manner.
18. He coached in Newton for two years when his boys were in elementary school. I thought he came straight from Jasper, but maybe not. He and W.T. Johnston went to college together and I think that is what got him to come to Newton.
19.

The Buc players, coaches and fans had a tough time traveling to Newton for this game.  We realize and recognize that the Newton community is suffering.  Of course we wanted the win, but many of us would have been just fine with a loss to Newton right now.  Our coaches and players did what they felt Coach Barbay would have expected and that was to show up to play his team, just like had he been there.  It would have been disrespectful to him and to his team to show up with any less than our best.  No one at EC is rubbing in the win as someone suggested earlier.  In fact, it is rather bitter sweet.  No matter what, we will never get the credit for the win as many of you have already made clear.  We can't help the circumstances.  I am proud to be from East Chambers and am proud of the way our players, cheerleaders, drill team and our band represented our community at this game.  The band playing Amazing Grace to honor Coach Barbay was heartfelt. Our sincerest condolances to the Newton players, coaches, fans and to Coach Barbay's family.
Now that's about as classy a post as I've ever read on this forum.I tip my cap to you maam.
I agree! Very well said and heartfelt. Your absolutely right about what Coach Barbay would expect. Thanks from a long, long time Eagle.
20. Coach Alverez coached at Jasper, then two years at Newton, then possibly Head Coach at West Sabine(I want to say he went somewhere else first), then Kirbyville.
21. Congrats to EC on their win. They played hard and dominated the line of scrimmage. EC Bands tribute to Coach Barbay at halftime was much appreciated and well received. Good luck the rest of the season.

23. The lights were on, the stands were full, the Eagles entered the field through the tunnel and Coach Barbay ruled the sideline one more time. Many, many former players and old friends along side current players. I, along with lots of others, shed some tears. Ms. Mona told me that it was very uplifting. A great tribute to a legend. RIP Coach.
24.
May I add I see Lombardi, Halas, Bear Bryant, and Barbay all sitting around a table in Heaven talking football.
With Barbay diagramming the scat! What a great thought.
