Other than that HJ defense looked solid. HJ did not score. Offense looked good at times but looks like some linemen are struggling with assignments. HJ did move the ball but would then get an offsides call and set them back. Cleveland looked like a solid team. They have a lot of speed. Line looked athletic.
Pretty much agree with this take. Cleveland is athletic but lack in offensive line play (not very big and lack agility) and the QB is not that great. Cleveland's defensive line played well. After getting their feet wet figuring out the HJ offense, Cleveland pretty much shut HJ down the remaining half of the scrimmage. HJ defense looked much improved except for giving up the big play a time or two. But that comes with the territory when you stunt and blitz as much they did. Sometimes you get caught with your pants down. ;) HJ secondary missed some coverages at times, but all in all played well. HJ offense is still a work in progress. Made some nice runs at times but for the most part, was held in check. HJ was tackled for loss several times. What surprised me the most was during the entire scrimmage (1st and 2nd teams) HJ only attempted 2 passes, both from the 2nd team. HJ 1st team never attempted a pass. Looks as though Coach Dubose is really trying to get the Hawks to learn the offense before expanding on it. I believe this is the type offense HJ has needed all along and I think in time will be successful. I saw an improved HJ team scrimmage an athletic but a fundamentally lacking Cleveland team. Cleveland scored twice, HJ did not score and the closest HJ got as the Cleveland 20. BTW, I also did not see a 21-3A district championship team on the field.  ;)HJ has improved and I think has a shot at the 4th playoff spot, but they have a long way to go in regards to winning 21-3A this season.
Not even close to a district championship team…..Yet…. Remember, you guys said yourself the offense will not be learned over night….. But we showed signs of getting it down…. We will be right by the time we play a district game… Only been doing this for 2 weeks guys…. AAW, I thought you were biased, you come out there and walk along the sidelines like your somebody then get on here and take a cheap shot… Typical…. Just like on the Silsbee/Newton thread, this was a scrimmage, only we didn’t get handled as bad as Silsbee did, and we are not making excuses for it. False starts, how’s that, caused a couple of setbacks, that’s our fault…. I know Newton is a powerhouse, but I thought you guys at Silsbee were too?
And here we go!! Give it a rest edelmon!! Don't even go there! There is a huge difference between scrimmaging the #1 team in the state and scrimmaging Cleveland. One thing about it, no matter what HJ does or how much they improved (insert sarcasm) they will still not beat Silsbee or make the playoffs this year.
But Farmer Fran ya'll were ranked #11 in 3A and was supposed to be a powerhouse. Just because a smaller school handed ya'll your hats you want to talk down to another that is seeing positive things in his team. I didn't see anything in Silsbee to make them ranked period. Their coach and AAW can make all the excuses and say what they want, Silsbee was far from any kind of championship football team last night. I was there and saw it. Were you?

And appears to be a good one. UT recruited him to be an athlete and I think he will be a great pickup at corner for them.
I keep reading slot receiver/safety/special teams.
He's got the skills for any of those. I don't quite see him at safety myself, but more to a corner. But I'm sure they have discussed all of this with him. Just congratulations to Kevin and on to playing his senior year for the purple and white.

 4.
It was a scrimmage, people!! As long as both teams came out of it injury free, that is the main thing. Both teams now know what they need to work on to get better. Newton will do fine this year and Silsbee will as well. Both teams were probably glad just to hit someone with a different colored jersey.
Thanks for that valuable information.

You posted something erroneous and stated you were there then left. Truth is Newton handled Silsbee in every scrimmage from the JV/9th to varsity. With varsity actually dominating the Tigers. Moving the ball? They showed a few flashes and that was it. Silsbee has the players to be a good team. But did not play like it last night.
Ok, one more time for the slow people. STiger85 is not upset. There was a question ask and I simply stated where you could go and I find the answer. There is nothing erroneous about what I posted. I'll ask you the same thing (if you are talking about the freshman and Soph thing) why don't you go ask your friend about it.
And once again I see insulting is a way of life for you. If you hadn't put 2 exclamation points on what you answered it might not have been interpreted as upset. Slow can be insinuated all you want, but the posts is what it is. Get over it.
No problem. After that Silsbee moved the ball by running it then had a long pass play for a TD. Silsbee was moving the ball again when I left. All first team on both sides. Don't know what happen after I left. 8. Aggies, I was there and what your coach told you is not entirely true. The Newton defense "reigned" him in. They attempted some of the same plays after the first series and he was trapped at the line of scrimmage. And "not wanting to get him hurt" was not in the passing game either. Newton took him down hard a number of times after penetrating the Silsbee line on passing plays. Silsbee's offensive line play was suspect to be kind and not even the reverse was successful.
 9. No use to get all upset STiger85. You posted something erroneous and stated you were there then left. Truth is Newton handled Silsbee in every scrimmage from the JV/9th to varsity. 10.
Shorter in midseason form?
He didn't carry the ball many times, but he did smoke everything Silsbee had on the field with one of those long td runs. And I mean smoked!!
 11. Silsbee has the numbers and the size from the 9th grade through varsity. Newton stood toe to toe though and matched anything Silsbee could do from what I saw. Silsbee's varsity QB is good, but did not make but one long pass play that scored. After the first series where he ran all over Newton, the Newton defense stiffened and Silsbee had little consistent play. Newton scored with two long runs and an intercepted pass. They were still running the 2nd team when I left. That was my take on varsity. Silsbee and Newton 9th and JV both seemed pretty equal. Newton outscored the 9th grade of Silsbee and I believe also the JV.
 12.
Yes I remember after this scrimmage last year someone predicted EC to beat Newton .. he the kinda guy that gets all hyped up over a scrimmage .
Seems I remember the same thing. I also remember which team was still playing after one of these teams was eliminated in the playoffs last year. And EC was a better team than the score showed when they played Newton. But a scrimmage is just that, a scrimmage. No one should get overly excited other than to hear the sound of those pads popping once again.  :)

 14. I've only seen Hardin when they have played Newton over the years. I will say that last year those kids never gave up even after Newton was well in control of the game. It's not easy to stay on the field and continue to get your hat slammed and those kids did it. They had effort and continued to try to do the best they could with their game plan. My hats off to any program that has that type kids. Hope the best for them this year. See ya'll in Newton.

I would rather Newton stay in the D1 of the new 3A, but not sure if the numbers aren't there. Do you have to drop to D2?
 17. Rankings are always good locker room inspiration when used by the wily coach. Always looking for emotion and drive, using rankings, along with "they tried to date your sister"  ;D, to motivate an "underdog" to come out biting. You never see a no 1 ranked team shouting "We're no 2, we're no 2". Rankings mean little. Wins mean it all.
 18. Newton also has the last state title from the Golden Triangle area, but it's always what have you done lately? Newton will once again be loaded at the beginning of the season, but where will they finish?
 19. I've been a Newton fan a long, long time and know that nothing is a given. These guys have a good chance, but have yet to play the first game. I've seen rankings disappear once the season started as well as teams get better once they start playing. Hard work does not guarantee winning, but it helps. I always say there is a lot of hard work involved, but also a little luck to win a state title. I've been reading about Tatum and Andy Evans seems to once again have those guys primed. Good luck to ya'll also.
 20. I had posted this prior to the server problems, but will do it again as I thought these kids had a good attitude. I talked to a couple of the varsity players yesterday and they said they had been working extra hard so they could take the next step. Sights are set on the state championship and they want to get that badly. I thought they had a great attitude and their work ethic looks to be in good shape as do they. Purple Pride Never Dies!!
 21. This year for Newton "feels" good right now. But, I have seen a number 1 ranking quickly evaporate for Newton. We'll know by the third game. Newton should roll!
 22.
"Kountze might surprise some folks this year"  Havent we heard that before?
Easy ryker, I remember they use to say the same thing about 'dem Kville cats!! But going to the state title game and losing twice has to mean something!!  8) Geez it feels so right to talk a little trash!! Time to get rid of the cobwebs and build to another great season!!! lol ryker, you up for it???????
 23. A rematch with Newton will end the same way as last year. Teague does not have the team speed to stay on the field. Never have. I've witnessed several games between the two and that is one constant. Just my opinion.
 24. Newton Eagles '73, wife '72, daughter '98, daughter 2000, son and Newton Eagle 2004. Purple Pride Never Dies!!
 25. Congratulations to Newton's program and head coach WT Johnston along with Kevin Shorter and Tyler Gibson. Purple Pride Never Dies!!!
