Will HJ even be in the hunt for district next year?
Shouldn't be but should make the playoffs.  Cross country and weak schedule will be their downfall.
HJ fan base still cocky
Now Dove you know I wasn't being cocky but based on their recent history I certainly have the right to - ha!

I know it's the norm to dog out HJ football but really don't see them bringing up the rear this year - if they were to finish in the top half of the district would not be surprising.

Cardinals team is a group from Beaumont (Beaumont Athletic Club) I think.  Best of my knowledge they are not all from one school.

HJ JV team was predominantly freshman, with a couple of sophs mixed in.  HJ had 4 freshman playing with the varsity group, although 2 of those also played JV.
Yeah HJ had a good mix with the JV & varsity teams - will be interesting to see if those freshman remain with varsity.

HJ always puts on a great tournament. Beaumont Trail Blazers played both HJ & Kountze very well. Had a chance to win both games. The big guard for HJ is the truth, the kid scores at will. Kountze is a very balanced & athletic Team. We really enjoyed the competition. Good luck to both programs.

Did Nederland have a team in the tournment?
Ned entered a JV team, and they won all 3 games they played. The team was comprised of mostly Freshmen kids who will be Sophs next year.
Nederland hits a 3 at the buzzer to beat HJ JV after HJ hits a 3 to tie it with 9 seconds left.

You hear all the time but look at these teams and see how many have single mothers heading their household.
Is that the case in this particular situation?
What particular situation? I thought this was just a general, hypothetical situation?

(and we will not discuss any particular situation on this board)
I believe this thread was started in regards to a particular situation but I am not about air it out here.  Just wondering, if we won't discuss a particular situation on this board then why did you ask me "what particular situation"?

A topic that will become relevant in the near future needs to be addressed by Coaches to their student-athletes.

Student-Athletes need to understand that their off-court decisions not only affect their own personal lives, but also it can have a detrimental affect on their team and school.  One wrong decision and everything that the athlete has worked toward can be taken away.  But members of the team need to also understand that they also have a responsiblity to the team to make sure that a teammate is not acting in a way that can affect the team negatively. The members of the team need to not worry about ridicule or retribution if they know of a situation that is happening that can affect the team and the teammate brings it to the attention of the coach.

Just as an individual is responsible for his own actions, he should be held accountable by his team to to make good decisions.  A lot of kids nowadays make a decision thinking it will only affect themselves, but most decisions have a "ripple affect' that affects those around them including their teammates.  These young men need to understand that sometimes we need to help our teammates from their own worst enemy, themselves.  Jusy my .02

I can't figure out if I'm in shock or denial.

    Or both?

Good win for hj. But that was the sloppiest I have ever seen them play
Well, then, Freeze, that is good news because they beat an athletic team (the kind you say they cant beat ) with their leading scorer being ill and their other leading scorer missing the last two minutes by fouling out and, in general, they played sloppy.  And one more thing, cross country made a difference in the last couple of minutes last night.
They beat WOS. You honestly think they can beat Silsbee the way they played. WOS athleticism not even close to what Silsbee bringing
"WOS athleticism not even CLOSE to Silsbee"?  Surely you don't really believe that.

I recall saying that H-J has trouble with athletic teams and some didn't believe me.  First Central, Then WO-S, then finally Silsbee.  The Hawks will need to do some tweeking before the playoffs start because I have a feeling you'll see Silsbee again or maybe even Yates.  You want to avoid the same kind of result like tonight.
Yes athletic teams are difficult to deal with - fortunately Central wasn't athletic last year.
They are athletic this year.  What does last year have to do with this year?
Nothing - just living in the past & recalling HJ's win over Central last year that conjured up some good memories.  We weren't supposed to hang with yall but actually forced the action & won the game.  Nice to see the little guy win.

Silsbee is shredding the press.  they're scoring at will on the break.  35 points, 14 or 15 layups.
That usually doesn't happen against HJ's pressure.
They don't usually play teams this athletic .
Last I checked they play Silsbee AT LEAST twice a year & Silsbee usually fields a quite athletic team.
This is the fastest/most athletic team Silsbee has fielded in quite a while. The whole team is extremely quick. Granted, it does sound like HJ's defense is playing very good.
And it's not helping HJ's cause that they graduated a lot of talent last year & Silsbee practically has everybody back this year.
