TPWD to Consider Sweeping Deer Hunting Regulation Changes
tvc184 replied to bronco1's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
We had about a 7 to 1 doe to buck ratio and were way overcrowded with does. I can't imagine a 10-1. Y'all need to kill some does in a serious way. It usually takes 3.5 years to get their horns outside of the ears. If you start with nothing but fawn bucks, within three years you will have quality deer. If you have a few 1.5 year old bucks then within two years you will start seeing some good ones. That is what we did and it is a fairly fast process. There is no point killing spikes except for meat and if they want the meat, start busting those overcrowded does. In Tyler County where I hunt you can get two does without permits and we used that limit very successfully in management. -
Update on the PN-G coaching situation

Throw in about 5 more wins against Nederland in that time frame and many of the PNG fans would be happy with Burnett's record. -

When there were three teams in the playoffs, the small school division went the same number of games as both division now in the 4 team system. If you cut it to a 2 team per district playoff with a single state champion, it will still be the same number of games as a 4 team with two divisions. If we want to argue watered down playoffs then go for it but it is really reaching to say that there shouldn't be more teams as it will increase the chance of playing in bad weather or that it will risk injuries. If we are that worried about injuries, why not cut out the two scrimmages? Why not drop one of the non-district games? Why not just put dresses on them and not even play football? -
TPWD to Consider Sweeping Deer Hunting Regulation Changes

Yep. The area around Jasper is notorious for killing deer underage. Many in that area are the ones that go by the "if it's brown, it's down" rule. It is amazing how good the deer herd looks when you let they grow to at least their third year of life. If you want deer sausage, kill a couple of does. I still talk to people in east Texas that thinks it is a tragedy to kill any does and thinks that a huge doe population is the answer to a great deer herd. In truth that is what kills most deer herds from ever reaching their potential. I have talked to both state and private biologists and every one has said the same thing. Before you worry about planting food plots, before you worry about managing the soil and before you worry about cull bucks you need to kill does and let the bucks grow. That alone will vastly improve deer hunting. Now to convince the neanderthal hunters of that fact. About six years ago when I started on my current lease we have a 6 point or better rule. Don't ask me why. About four years ago we started managing it but it is only about a 900 acre lease in between other large leases. Could it be successful? We started by killing lots of does (I think we have killed about 36 in the last two years alone) and letting the bucks grow up. A very good one was killed about five days ago and this is one that showed up a couple of days ago at a feeder. We have had our hunters spot a couple more that are better but we don't have pictures of them. It seems that the days of our small 6 pointers are over. I don't see how that happened with us killing all the does off.... said with the utmost sarcasm. -

I'm not arguing for the watered down playoffs but to suggest that the length of the season, cold weather or injuries has anything negative to do with 4 teams in the playoffs is ridiculous. -
Question about PN-G, Central Fight

HAHAHAHA!!! Filing charges by a local police department is one thing. Getting charges accept by the DA for a fight and prosecuting is another thing entirely. I will believe charges will be filed and accepted when I see it. -
That is probably true already. Bonfires are great. Damaging other people's property in the name of school spirit is not. I don't see how you equate destroying someone elses property or messing up their tradition with deciding to stay home and play a video game. In this case, it looks it would have been better if they stayed home and played the video.

Friendswood 69 LaMarque 48 Final Thur/LaMarque Out!

Wow! The once mighty La Marque has fallen to 3-6? No wonder we aren't getting the LM posters this year on the boards. The team that will always be in the playoffs, isn't. I guess the "whoosh" didn't work this season. Interesting that the year LM breaks their playoff string is the year that 4A goes to four playoff teams. -

That was it? He got ejected for making a chopping motion with his hands? I thought maybe he flipped off the home crowd or something. It was still in poor taste but nothing but elation. I have seen a couple of players stand in front of the opponent's side and do similar and not get flagged. Maybe they just got away with it. -
Maybe but I can't imagine that scenario. If they told/asked him and he obvioulsy said "no", then they would be suffering more than a one game suspension. If my boss told me directly not to do something and I did it anyway, I would likely be fired. Well in this case, the coach is the boss. If he made direct contact with them about it beforehand and they went anyway, shame on them. Again, I would have a hard time believing that it happened that way but there have been stranger things happen.
