Copperas Cove: Tons of talent returns for the Dawgs, including Tech pledge in WR Rashad Hawk. Cypress Falls: Falls has one of top receiving duos in state, not just at 7-on-7, as well as LB Derek Stephens (A&M pledge) leading the defense. Hebron: Brian AuBuchon, one of the catalysts for the state title run, returns as a seasoned veteran. Houston Stratford: Not much has been said about Andrew Luck, but the Stratford QB, at 6-4, could emerge from this weekend as one to watch after passing for 1,500 yards in ‘05. Katy: Though the Tigers needed until July to qualify, they have plenty of talent to make a run at the finals. Lufkin: Think the Pack will want to prove they’re worthy of their No. 1 ranking in the 2006 DCTF? Southlake Carroll: Talent never a question mark for Dragons; having Riley Dodge at QB is like having a coach on the field. Tyler John Tyler: Beating crosstown nemesis Tyler Lee propelled JT, not former champion Lee, into the favorites category. Weatherford: Roos are loaded with receivers; watch out if QB Briley Worthington can get them the ball consistently. Wolfforth Frenship: Only a junior, QB Seth Doege, a Crane transfer, could really bust out onto the scene with a strong state showing. Katy Cinco Ranch: Another former champion with a strong shot at doubling its number of titles. CONTENDERS Abilene: QB Spens Lackey is showing Eagles can move on past Potts era. Alamo Heights: An easy-to-remember name, QB Giovanne Vizza could lead AH far. Arlington Lamar: Mainstay at state tournament. Bandera: Look for QB Brandon Hicks to shine. Bellaire: QB Max Flinn is solid, but surrounding parts will need to play at his level. Beaumont Ozen: Best defensive backfield in competition will be tested. Brownwood: In this slot more from experience with passing offenses and less with personnel. Cypress Fairbaks: Cy-Fair lost 17 starters from last year’s surprise 10-3 run. Edcouch-Elsa: Team qualified in El Paso, so trip to College Station won’t be a factor. Grapevine: ‘98 runner-ups know a thing or two about the passing game. Haltom: Team is making quick transition to a new coach and system. Houston Lamar: QB Woods returns to lead team that went unbeaten in ‘05 regular season. Katy Taylor: First team to qualify in 2006. North Mesquite: Might have to rely on defense. Odessa Permian: Can Mojo recapture magic? Pearland: The Sam Proctor-Foswhitt Whitaker connection should strike often. Plano East: Looks for East to use Chris Slater in multiple positions. Saginaw Boswell: QB Taylor Weidman will get his chance to earn equal footing with some of the state’s better known passers. San Benito: New arriver on state scene could provide fits early on. Stephenville: Qualifying is good way to begin life after Jevan Snead. Tyler Lee: Took the Rebs a while just to qualify. Victoria Memorial: Vipers love to throw the ball around. West Mesquite: Held opponents to a sub-20 point average during its 5-0 tournament run. West Orange-Stark: This 3A squad usually has the talent of larger schools. Wharton: Smallest school (under 700 enrollment) to make state. Wylie: Georgia transfer Patrick Witt could be the tourney’s X-factor. UNDERDOGS Alief Elsik: Late qualifier might be happy just to be here. Arlington Bowie: Newly hired Coach Perry already bringing returns to the Vols. Austin Lake Travis: Post-Todd Reese era off to good start just by qualifying for state. Buda Hays: Hays always has talent, but graduation stripped Rebels of much of it. Burnet: Rebounding from last year’s 4-6 mark starts in the summer. Bryan: The Vikings waited a long time to qualify - and got drubbed by West Mesquite in the final. Canton: Longshots to even make it, it’s all gravy at this point. Colleyville Heritage: QB Casey Russell has talent, but will take some time to reach level of his predecessor. Cypress Creek: QB Bryan Smith will use state to transition from his ‘05 DB position. Cypress Springs: Making it to this point should help Springs recover from 1-9 mark last year. El Paso Hanks: Omar Hanks, an undervalued QB, will strut his stuff on the state scene. Georgetown: Team still learning new system. Graham: 3A squad is led by WR Chance McCoy, younger brother of Colt. Langham Creek: Langham Creek still trying to break in successor to Ross Jenkins. McAllen Rowe: Rowe just needs to make most of first qualification in two years. Midlothian: Surprise qualifier looking to continue string of upsets. Plano: Had a nice resurgence last season, but that was in a run-based offense. Port Arthur Memorial: Once team picks up Coach Thompson’s approach, Titans will be a major state player. Rockwall: Only thing up in the air for Rockwall is the QB position. Round Rock: Dragons have two receiving threats in Alex Russian and James Kirkendoll. Sherman: Run-oriented QB Taylor Dunlap will need adapt to 7-on-7 passing style. Spring Westfield: Not quite as much talent returns compared to 2005. San Antonio Clark: QB Justin Vaneck returns from 1,500-yard campaign.

I can't see Central being in front of WO-S. 4A or not, Central was handled pretty well by WO-S last year and they both have a lot coming back. WO-S proved last year that your not better just because your bigger. They beat 2 of the 3- 4A playoff reps.

I was wondering the same thing. The article says he is a "former" A&M football player. That kind of threw me.

They will not get field turf because that makes the terrain faster, something they don't want. 8)

I think most coaches realize that what's important are the quality wins (ie. playoffs, state title, etc). The only way to get to that level is through quality preparation, like scheduling quality opponents. This will, of course, hurt your win/loss record in the short term, but building programs is not done over night. That is what most quality coaches are after. The problem comes in when administrations (like Ozen in my opinion) do not give coaches enough time to get there OR the coaches do not approach it correctly.

I have to agree with the BH dude... I think Dayton is being a little under estimated. I think they will vie for one of the top 3 spots, which one I'm not sure of, but will get one. I think this will be the first time in a while that Mid County is outside looking in.

There's enough money around here, especially with oil at 70 something dollars a barrel. These corporations just need to turn loose of some.

I think Dayton finishes 3rd in district at the worst.

Couple of points: Earl Thomas did not go to Jr High at LCM, he was there for one year, his freshman year. The old Lincoln teams prove that coaching IS important and that speed is not all that it takes. Katy, Stephenville, Austin Westlake, South Lake Carrol are also examples of teams that are not bursting at the seem with speed, but still win consistently.

We're now 14-0 in 7 on 7 this year... not to shabby.

According to DCTF, they only have 1 player returning. Seems odd the coaches would pick them #1 if that is accurate.
