Mean Machine reacted to Alpha Wolf in High School Refs
Many of our teams just finished their last tournaments of the year this week. They should see better officiating the remainder of their seasons. It all boils down to trying to keep the tournaments on schedule. The more whistles they blow, the longer the game. Last night in our championship game, there were a lot of calls that were not made for the sake of time. Our girls can be physical with anybody but we are also good at knocking down free throws as well as we have some depth on our bench if someone does get into foul trouble.
As me and my freshman daughter sat last night and watched the game, I told her that tournament basketball is more physical and that she has to play through contact that would normally be called a foul in a district game. She normally plays PG/SG for her team. Should it be this way that I have to educate my daughter about this when it comes to basketball? No it shouldn't but it is...

Lol, i'm in agreement with you. Being undefeated and a state ranking just makes a larger target. We will get everybody's best effort then some. Timberwolves must bring their "A" game every game for they will be the hunted.. I'd trade the state ranking for some local media coverage. We're blessed to have this format (SETXSPORTS) for the exposure it provides...jmo...

Mean Machine got a reaction from BMTSoulja1 in High School Refs
First off, I hope the young lady will be ok and has a very speedy and successful recovery from injury.
Secondly, I had a long post typed in on this but deleted it. I will limit it to these points
1) The potential for injury from a poorly controlled game environment from an officiating perspective is what frightens me the most as the parent of a girl basketball player.
2) There tends to be an overall apathy towards the fact that the girl's game is allowed to be played at an extremely physical level a lot of the times.
3) I believe this is largely done to keep the games at a "manageable" time frame, because of the fundamental overall lack of skilled players on a large number of high school teams' rosters.
4) The product that Refs calling UIL based games deliver should be like getting a Big Mac from McDonalds, i.e. the SAME no matter which one you go to (anywhere in the country), not all over the place in terms of how they call it.
5) Two refs on the court for Varsity level play is not enough, there needs to be three. The extracurricular stuff that always escalates does so much more in two ref games as opposed to three ref games.
As with all my posts, they are my opinion. My comments are made with the intent to initiate a healthy discussion on a topic that needs to be addressed.

I may have switched the GCM and Travis, but I thought I wrote down what the BH Tourney people put up on the sheet that was posted on the wall. I have been known to make an error every now and then, just ask my lovely wife, lol.
Either GCM or Travis will be strong squad, hopefully United is up for the task, I believe they will answer the bell.

5A PA Mem 61
4A Lumberton 50
Close game throughout, not sure why PAM's strategy is not to run everything thru #5 on EVERY POSESSION, but that's why I'm just a parent in the stands.
Lumberton 1-3 for tournament. Always tough to take losses, but they saw good competition against teams with size and length and held up fairly well. Hopefully, it will have a positive effect for the rest of district play for the young Raider team
May not be at the games tomorrow, gotta try to work on my house to finish that up, hopefully someone else can catch the rest of the scores to finish it out. Good luck United, it was fun watching y'all some today.

Great post and I agree a 1000% percent except for the part I put in bold. It depends on what community you live in because in mine, it's the opposite. But I do understand what you are saying, it's why our volleyball teams finish at the bottom every year and basketball near the top or at the top...

I witnessed the absolute crushing of Lumberton personally, this past Friday. As a father, it was difficult watching one's daughter get thrown in harm's way like that, but I admire the way she and the Lumberton young ladies competed as hard as they could against that Juggernaut, lol. No doubt HJ is really good, as is United, there is only one way to semi-accurately gauge who is the best, a head to head match-up. Does not look like that was in the cards, for whatever the reason....
As I said earlier in the post, if all goes as I am seeing listed in Barbers Hill tournament Pool and Bracket play, United will get its chance to show where they are,for people with questions on them, with a likely bracket matchup with (#1) 5A Fort Bend Hightower on Friday, assuming both teams win their selective pool play games
I have watched a number of the young ladies on both of these programs over the years, as my daughter has either played with them in AAU, played against them, or worked out with them the last five or so years. Great to watch all these talented young ladies grow and improve right before our eyes. Good luck to both both programs as the season progresses.

A strong Little Dribblers Program that works on teaching the young girls fundamentals and skills is a good place to start. It needs to be a program where the world doesn't end if one doesn't win the mini-minor or minor championship, rather put the emphasis on the young players improving.
My daugther was a 4th grader at Lumberton when Vidor started their Little Dribble program back up. I remember her Little Dribbler All-Star Team Coach at Lumberton agreeing to scrimmage Vidor many times that winter and spring, because the Vidor Coach wanted to get their program up and running. It was not about wins and losses, it was about teaching the game to the children. My daughter is a 10th grader now, and through the years l have watched that group of girls at Vidor, that is within a year or two of my daughter, become a one of the hardest working groups in our area.
There has to be commitment from parents and most fundamentally, young girls have to want to play basketball. It is a sport that is not as glamorous as Volleyball, the sport where most tall athletic talent seems to migrate to. There has to be a group of girls that starts to play at a young age, and carries that through high school.
A large number of the high school players in our area that are really talented at basketball typically will also play AAU and train by themselves and with trainers for many hours outside of any school related practice. They have started this process before middle school. The analogy I always use is "The Iceberg". One only sees 5-10% of an Iceberg (i.e. a girl playing in a game), but 90-95% of the Iceberg is HIDDEN, (i.e. all the individual practice and training, AAU practice and training, etc.).
I have no doubt Nederland could build a competitive girls program, it is just going to take a committed bunch to push it in the right direction. Good Luck.

PAM’s record does not reflect what they are capable of, Julia at the post is hard to stop for many teams on this list.

The fans wanted to see HJ vs United, it was unfortunate the teams couldn't work something out on the open dates each team had.
