Most of these girls are not committed to small schools. They have to be pretty talented to be playing D1 softball. I believe 5 of them are D1 recruits. These girls play all across the country and win so I don't know what else to say.

That is awesome for those girls & their families.  My point is that today's softball is geared towards travel ball & getting the scholarship/committment.  Lord knows we all need any extra money there is to send our kids to college.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.  But if today's highschool softball would buy in to the State Championship it would mean a lot more for the player.  Would mean a lot to the past players that tried to get there.  The community, the athletic program, the highschool etc.  Maybe it's the old school in me but I believe it's all about making it to Austin.

  2. Not sure how to say this without offending but "college commits" doesn't mean anything.  I'm not taking anything away from the girls.  The current system is set up where there are 4 teams that go to the playoffs.  Select/travel ball has become the norm and the parents seem to believe that the current head coaches are dumber than the select coaches.  This mindset just blows me away.  Just about any softball player that has a small amount of talent can go play at a very small community college somewhere in a city that we've never heard of along with a college we've never heard of.  Great props to the girls that continue their education and softball careers wherever they can but this "college commit" tag has become an epidemic.  An epidemic in all sports.  Just because the athlete is a "college commit" doesn't mean they will win.  I blame a lot of it on social media in the pressure to post commitments etc.  I remember back in the 80's where teams would win state championships and maybe 1 or 2 athletes from those respected teams would go to play at the next level.  I could go on but the ideology behind the "college commit" nonsense needs to stop.  It has accounted for ZERO WINS.

  3. KP has the depth.  Dayton has the best pitcher in the district but no depth.  BH two pitchers are young.  Splendora has a really good starter but no depth like Dayton.  Will be a fun Monday but wish they would just flip for the spots.  Especially with the playoffs coming up & the teams just played Friday night maxing out their pitchers etc.

  4. Congrats to Coach Bell and his Lady Broncos.  Going in to BH and dominating a very good program.  I picked this team at the beginning of the season to be the front runner in 21-5A & make a great run.  They started out a little slow at the beginning of the season but are showing great strides going into the playoffs.  Would not want to face any of the top four teams in this district come playoff time.

I didn't say Dayton wasn't growing, I said it's not growing as fast as the surrounding areas they have to compete with which is moving them down the ladder in district talent rankings. We're at the point now where Porter and New Caney are producing 4-star dbs. The game has changed.

Building a bunch of houses is fine but you better have a bunch of millennials with young children moving in to fill them instead of older people moving out there that just want more property. It's a hard sell for a set of 30-40 year old parents with young kids to pass Crosby, Barbers Hill, Baytown, Atascocita, the newer Sheldon area and even Huffman to come to Dayton which has less to offer and is most likely a tougher commute to work.

Compare that with the rapidly growing tax bases of the schools I just named and you can see why what used to be little 'ole New Caney probably has the nicest stadium in Houston for the moment, it's why BH can overpay to pull away a state championship coach from a cushy job and the reason Crosby's stadium has all the bells and whistles to go with the nicest baseball/softball complex in the state. None of that stuff meant squat 10-15 years ago, but now if you don't have it it matters a lot.

    Bingo
