Dawgs12345 got a reaction from Horton in You would think this would make Surratt haul out of Carthage. Probably wishful thinking.
I know you are not replying to Carthage posters, so no need to reply. I’m not necessarily trying to get in a debate, just clearing the air for others who might read this and are interested.
Surratt runs a true multiple set offense. That is pro-style. I think you guys are getting that mixed up with the old school pro-set out of I formation or split back like Katy runs. That is not what Surratt runs. He runs an extremely sophisticated offense that is pretty much concepts of every all rolled into one. He uses TE and FB in the I formation all the way to 5 wide empty set in the shotgun and everything in between. QB is checking into plays at the line of scrimmage from a particular set based on defensive looks. The OL has more blocking schemes than most college teams (and that comes from college lineman that have played at Carthage). Surratt offense when ran correctly with the right personnel is unstoppable. Very few times has it been unleashed to the max. Most of the best Carthage teams were not playing in 2nd halfs. Look at what Carthage did last year with staters playing about 1/2 of the games, even through most of the playoffs.  Carthage is very balanced and plays good D. So you are not going to see them scoring 70 a game even though they could. That s just it their style. A good Carthage offense will score about 700 points per year give or take in 16 games. So there is no comp with a team like Katy because they don’t run the same offense. Not even close. Btw I really like Katy’s offense. To be honest I don’t think another program in the state runs an offense like Carthage when the whole playbook is installed. And that doesn’t happen every year if you get what I mean. Have to have the QB and OL to make it happen. And elite TE doesn’t hurt.
Surratt is a offensive genius. There just isn’t another way to say it. He is a QB coach and OC when it comes down to it. You can look back at what he did with Ryan Mallet in the early 2000’s at THS and Surratt continued to mentor him until he was finished playing. He would come stay in Carthage for a couple weeks in the summer. Surratt won a state title as OC at THS and left for Carthage in 2007. Check out THS from about 2001 until 2006 and then look at what they did after Surratt came to Carthage. Norton had a hell of a staff, but still one guy leaves and wins 8 state titles in 14 years. And that was at the 2nd highest level in the state at THS. I know I sound like any other homer but it’s is what it is. I’m telling you legit football people around the state know. This guy just has “it”.
As the other guys mentioned Surratt has had plenty of opportunities to leave for positions similar to what Traylor had when entering the CFB ranks. I think people will see soon enough. He will move on when his son graduates IMO. Not trying to sound like a homer on this one. Surratt is seen by his peers as that dude. Coaches around the state know.
If anybody has time and wants to see what Surratt’s offense really looks like wide open and executed at a high level go watch last years state championship. Or the state title game with Kennedale in 2017 (just trying to think about games that will be on YouTube). Some witnessed it first hand against Silsbee in the 1st half of a playoff game in 2017. That was the best offensive performance I have ever seen at any level. Unreal execution.

Looks like Crosby continues to improve on offense every week. 724 yards and 69 points? Y’all’s boys are getting after it! Keep it up. Seems like the Cougars are getting ready to make another in this year. Pulling for you guys from Carthage.

No. Gilmer only scored 7. I get what you are saying though. Believe me alot of us Carthage fans feel the same way about our O. But I don’t care how good an offense is, it’s going to be hard for any team to score against Carthage this year.

This one is over. Jasper won’t score 14. Carthage still better clean it up on offense. Turnovers are going to hurt us at some point.

Jasper changes their offense now. Not sure what’s going on. They are lining up in goal line set on their own 30 yard line with no WR. Not sure what they are doing. Just trying to run it up the middle every play. 4th down coming up.

Carthage scores again on 4th and 9 on a screen pass to the RB. About a 30 yard TD pass. RB looked good there. 14-0 Carthage.

I agree 100%. Carthage is ripe for an upset this season. Reminds me of the 2018 Dawgs but our problem is on the opposite side of the ball. In 2018 it was our D that was a liability. In 2021 it is the offense. I think against subpar competition the offense is really good, but I’ll have to see them execute at a high level against a good defense before I’m not worried. They looked unstoppable against Center and I do believe games like that will help them build confidence, but I would love to see them look good this week against Jasper’s D.

That’s not the argument, the argument is 2016 WOS was better than any team Carthage has fielded.
All you have to do is project 2020 Carthage vs 2016 WOS on Cal Preps and it has the Dawgs winning 28-19. I don’t think any of us Carthage fans are arguing 2016 vs 2016. I don’t think that’s much of an argument. But to say all of the Carthage teams? That’s asinine.

I have a better question. How many players from the 2016 WOS could’ve started on the 2017 Carthage team? Not at RB and not at LB for sure. Ingram just ran for 86 yards on 15 carries yesterday and looked as good as he has ever looked. Carthage has 2 WR that are still playing football at the FCS level from that team. JD was the POY, but Capps is still playing college football at the FCS level. Colbert in the secondary was probably our best player. OL? Come’on man. 4 star Ty’kieast Crawford couldn’t even start on that team. 2017 Carthage had legit DI talent. Which players from 2016 WOS were highly touted prospects?
So these conversations will never end. We can go back and forth all day. 2016 WOS was an all-time great team that blew thru a bad schedule (6 out of 10 regular season opponents had losing records). They were absolutely awesome. But just slow down they would beat any Carthage team ever.

Sloppy game overall, just happy for Carthage to come out with a victory. This was a pretty big step up in competition from the 5a teams we have played the last 4-5 years. Crosby literally played in the state title game last season. No matter what anybody says this is notch in the Carthage program’s belt. Huge win IMO. There is always the question whether or not Carthage can compete at the higher levels, I think wins like this show there is no doubt they could. When we put Marshall on the schedule this is the type of games that we’re expected. In 2018 it was a close game and Marshall went 3 rounds deep that year, but they have fell off since then and basically refused to play us this year. Their coach said it didn’t benefit them to play Carthage (aka get blown out by a 4a DII school).

Crosby had some great looking players on both sides of the ball. Very impressed with their D-Line. They also had some athletes on offense. Stud QB, RB, and WR. Not sure why they didn’t out the ball in #20’s hands more. Should’ve committed to running the ball more. That kid is a baller. Kirkwood was also impressive on that long TD. He is FAST.
Carthage really missed their starting center. Anybody that knows Carthage football knows the importance of our center. But in all honesty, I don’t know how much of a difference having all our starting O-Line would have made in the run game. Crosby D-Line was very good. That has to be the best D-Line we will see all year. Those kids dominated the LOS. Where I think having our starters would’ve made the biggest difference was in pass protection. Knowing assignments and picking up stunts and blitzes. Tough night for Roc. Cuff came in and played great, but I honestly still think this is a competition at the QB position even with how good Cuff played last night. We won’t see a D as good as Crosby again this season, so things will look a lot different against 4a competition. Regardless we have depth at the QB position which is a great thing to have. Very impressed with Carthage WR’s. That will be a special group later in the season. Excited to see Paddie develop. Kid is a burner. Hatten is the leader and 4 star. Wade is a playmaker.
Overall I think this was a great 1st game for both teams to see where they are. Definitely a ton of things to work on going forward for both teams. I think both these teams have success this season. Cannot remember the last time Carthage was down 17. I think you would have to go back to 2016 in the 1st game against Henderson? Not sure. Maybe 2015 against La Vega.
Anyway, good luck to Crosby going forward. Hopefully we can keep this game going. Hope your QB gets healthy and you guys make another run this year. Best of luck.
