Our offense has to improve drastically and hopefully our new HC can help make that happen. The defense should be good again. Objectively, I'd put us third at this point behind Silsbee and WOS (not necessarily in that order). It'll be an interesting season for sure.

I'm guessing realignment has a lot to do with this. The new district should be top heavy with WOS, Jasper and Silsbee in some order followed by everyone else. It'd be cool to get Newton on the schedule somehow.

It would be more cost effective to have one person in both roles. I wonder if he's working on getting it or if he'll be content being a coordinator for a while. Any idea who else might be interested other than maybe Coach Alvarez?

I think you're right. Coach Alvarez came to Jasper as an assistant in either '89 or '90 when I was a student. We had a fun coaching staff in those days and he was a great guy when I knew him. I haven't seen him in almost 30 years, but I would be thrilled if he came back to lead the Bulldogs.

Agreed. Foreman is well regarded down in Orange and I think he knows how good a job Jasper is, but Alvarez wins everywhere he goes and Bronson is going to get a HC job somewhere soon. Either one would be good for us and both know the program.

Why would he choose Jasper when WOS is still open? He wouldn't be allowed in Orange after that unless he drove Jasper's program into the dark ages. 😂

It's hard to argue the criticism about the Silsbee situation. There are two sides to that story, but either way it should have made us want to play the Tigers even more. Like I said before, Barbay did a good job in Jasper overall and he had two really good teams in 2018 and 2019. I wish him and his family well, but it's time for us to turn the page. The next coach has his work cut out for him retooling the offense. Bronson is doing an amazing job with his defense and that needs to be left alone unless he gets the job and hires another coordinator. It'll be interesting to see what the school board decides to do.

I'll be honest. I kept checking this board expecting to see that he was moving on in some way. It just felt like it was time. I'm sure the next coach will also be the AD as Coach Barbay was. I'm sure some good coaches will apply, but Coach Alvarez's track record and familiarity with the program would be hard to pass up. I wonder how much smoke there really is to that speculation.

Coach Alvarez started in coaching on Walkoviak's staff back in 1990 when I was still there, if I remember correctly. He was there until he took the Kirbyville job. It would be a good fit for sure. Bronson would benefit long-term from being on his staff.
