1. What an honor it is to be SMITE-ABLE! I forgot all about that karma stuff on the left. I won't waste my time being preoccupied with someone else's status. I don't get quite that "bent out of shape."

jnunn, feel free to smite me all you want, but please remember that this is a GAME. You're taking this too seriously. Relax. If you want to make this personal, perhaps you should spend your time in pursuit of some healthier endeavor.

Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go cry, for I hath been smoten.

UIL State record stats on most playoff appearance by a team

Coldspring (25) 1942, 45, 50, 51, 52, 54, 55, 64, 66, 74, 75, 90, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 98, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010

West Orange-Stark (22) 1979, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010

Jasper holds the Area 3-A record with 40, 2nd in State behind Hondo with 49.
Highland Park holds the all classifications record with 52. Both WO-S and Coldspring would have to make a 30 year run to match that record.
Considering our MUCH shorter history, should we not look at percentages? We've made the playoffs 69 percent of the time (going from 1979 on) and CS has made it 36 percent (going from 1942 on).
I knew if I threw the bait and hook out some shark would take the bait.
Sorry they don't keep those kind of stats at the UIL site, if they had I would have posted them.
You need to take it to UIL, these are their stats, not mine.
Besides you know stats don't mean nothing, its time to play the game...

By the way #200 coming up, saved it just for you.
The stats are fine! You guys have just had 37 extra years to rack up those impressive three extra playoff appearances! ;) What is it that I'm taking to the UIL? Sometimes I think you're watching a different movie than the rest of us.

Thanks for acknowledging, finally, that the stats don't mean anything.  ;D

Did I somehow slip up and say that I know who is going to win the game? I don't. I wish I did! The point that is eluding you is that none of those things matter when the game rolls around. We have had those things in our favor COUNTLESS times and still lost. We have been on the short end and won. No one knows who will win the game.

So what is your "counterpoint?" I said that past stats and rankings won't help on Friday night. Is your counterpoint that they WILL have an impact on the outcome of the game, or do you concede my point?
At first I thought that you just didn’t like stats, now I think you have a bigger problem. I now am beginning to believe that just because Coldspring has better offensive stats, defensive stats, winning record, higher in National, State, 3A and area ranking that you are scared to death they will have a bearing on the game. Unlike you I am not going out on the limb, I think this will be one heck of a game and the winner will represent our area very well in the balance of the Play-Offs. Have a good nights sleep.
LOL! No, I'm just a firm believer that those things all go out the window when it's time to play. Show me where I went "out on a limb." I never made a prediction. We've had a million rankings, undefeated regular seasons, and impressive stats. I prefer our state trophies.

Did you answer the question? Didn't think so.

Nighty night!

6. Some of my favorites:

"Bullard went into the half with good scoreboard position where they felt comfortable coming into the second-half right chasing Orange-Stark but close enough to pull ahead like is their usual."

"The Mustangs scored one more time in the fourth with every break going their way. When they fumbled, they recovered it. When there was great coverage and no way they would catch the throw, they caught it for the touchdown."
7. If I thought the person who wrote this would find their way to this site, I wouldn't post it, but WOW. I thought "news" stories were supposed to avoid editorializing (giving opinions) or using loaded words and phrases (like "got lucky"). It is a fun read if you read it in the "Wild and Crazy Guys" accent (for those of you old enough to remember that... for those of you NOT... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH9sAENQNV8 )

coldsprings IS (NOT) the underdogs by no means  WE ALL KNOW THIS
I am just curious skipper, how do you know that WO-S is the underdog? Stats don't tell you anything, won and lost records do not mean anything, polls are out the window, individual team player records mean nothing, just how can you tell.
It took me a little while to figuer it out, stats has nothing to do with who wins and who has the best team. It is all in the "Predicting", that is thing we must all watch.

I am just now begining to get the hang of this "Point/Counter Point" begining to make sense. Improves everyones knowledge of the game.
Thats an easy one.  Its because Coldspring won the region last year, played in the State Championship game last year, and they have yet to lose a game this year.  They have also been ranked in the top 5 all year.  WO-S on the other hand, has 3 losses, struggled to beat some district opponents who didn't even make the playoffs, and are predicted to lose this game by all the HS football guru's; and oh yeah, have not been ranked in the top 10 the entire season.  Can't be much more of an underdog than that!!!
Homer, that was well put, it appears you have done your home work. I think I get the picture. Thanks I will quit listening to all of these folks that say stats, past games, rankings, are for the birds. Back to the books, thanks again.
You are mixed up between "determining the underdog" and "determining the outcome of the game." Stats and rankings might do the former, but they fail miserably at doing the latter. Let me put it this way: You can have the rankings, the glamour of having names on lists, the win-loss record and even - YES - the STATS! Because not one of those things will help your team when they line up across from mine on Friday. Just as long as we get the "W," you can have ALL of those. If your boys believe that those things mean something significant on Friday night, chances are their season will come to a quick close.
9. Not at all. Coldspring is a Top 10 team. We're not stupid. You forget: It was a group (small, granted) of Coldspring fans that painted their team as invincible (an unstoppable offensive machine, I think) when the playoffs started. We were a "down on our luck" WO-S team that was lucky to win district. If you asked me who was going to win on Friday, I would flip a coin. I think most of us feel like we're trying to prove that we even belong on the field. Weren't the Coldspring fans the ones bragging about a "team full of great athletes (Dave Campbell's Top 100, etc.)? The track championships came up as a response to someone claiming we lacked the speed to hang with CS. Are track and football very directly related? No. But it shows that we don't lack "speed." NFL and D1 players don't relate to this year either, but they help illustrate how a star-studded team doesn't equate to a championship. I expect a very close game.

Do I think we have a really good chance of winning Friday? Yes.
Should we be the underdogs? Yes.
Will I be here either way? Yes.

Head to Head Match-Ups
Teams                 Kirbyville---------- Orangefield--------- Bridge City--------- Cleveland --------Totals
West Orange-Stark (W) 55 - 7            (W) 17 - 14            (W) 21-16            (W) 58 -14        151 - 56
Coldspring---------- (W) 49 - 6            (W) 50 - 0              (W) 7- 0              (W) 61- 0          167 - 6
Well that says a lot. Hey, jnunn:

Philadelphia Eagles 24
Buffalo Bills 31

Dallas Cowboys 44
Buffalo Bills 7

Philadelphia Eagles 34
Dallas Cowboys 7

Or maybe:

Tennessee Titans 26
Baltimore Ravens 13

Houston Texans 41
Tennessee Titans 7

Baltimore Ravens 29
Houston Texans 14

You can post all of the common head-to-head opponents that you want. It means less than nothing. It all comes down to matchups between WO-S and CS. If you're looking for even a glimmer of what is to come based on what has been, you're fishing with an empty hook.

Same probably goes for W-OS on here.
Probably. But the same can't really be said for 3adownlow, where WO-S leads the poll with 69%. Guess what? POLLS, STATS, PREVIOUS SCORES, RANKINGS, POTENTIAL D1 STARS, etc. MEAN NOTHING at this point! I remember when WO-S had THE best defense in 4A about a decade ago. We had seven or eight shutouts. Did a LaMarque team that was having a "down year" care? Nope. They pulled the upset.

Greg Tepper and Travis Stewart, both of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football picks Coldspring to beat West Orange- Stark and to advance to State Simi-Finals

On the subject of Top Football Players in Texas list I could only find two players and only one was playing in this game that was listed in the top recruiters list.

For Coldspring Sherman Gilbert 4.5 40yd was listed as the 10th ranked RB in the state all though  Oklahoma State is recruiting him as an inside receiver. He also is listed as the 89th player in the Top 100 list.

For WO-S the only player (ex-player) I could find was Justin Thomas was listed as the 41st DB in the state, but is ineligible to play because he is 20 years old. He was not listed in the Top 100 list.

If there are other list please post for our friends we share this board with.
Well wait a minute here! Where is our 2005 State Championship trophy, Stang fans? Remember? We had Army All-American and Texas starting corner Deion Beasley, All-Star Texas safety (and first round pick of the Seattle Seahawks) Earl Thomas, Texas Tech starting receiver Jacoby Franks, and Lamar University star Andre Bevil among our players. Somehow, we got robbed!

I totally forgot that Dave Campbell's Top 100 players are the only ones eligible for state title contention! Well pack it up, boys. We've NEVER faced stars like THIS UNBEATABLE COLDSPRING TROJANS team!

How many Top 100 prospects did that BC team that you had a one-play win over have? Surely Lorena must have been LOADED with future NFL first-rounders in order to stay within six points of the mighty Trojans! Get back to me with a list!

Not to tak anything away from him he is a quality kid, But if our kids can go catch brandon williams from brookshire royal from behind and Johnathan Johnson from friendswood I think we have one or two that can walk down Mr. Gilbert..
We're not talking about running 40's ;D ;D ;D

Ya'll got some speedsters.  However, it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when Sherman Gilbert will cross the goal line during this Friday's game.
I agree. Backwards. Safety, anyone? ;)
Kidding.
Maybe.
