OF Lady Bobcats forget to rebuild Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader They lost seven seniors a year ago. Two starters are back from a regional semi-finalist team. Throw on top their long-time coach is now an assistant at Lamar University and the formula for a rebuilding year was supposed to be in place for the Orangefield Lady Bobcats. Rebuilding usually does not include starting 8-0 in the always tough District 21-3A schedule. Yet that is exactly what these Lady Bobcats have accomplished so far this season. After Tuesday night they have already defeated Silsbee twice and taken down Hardin-Jefferson and Hamshire-Fannett. Tuesday’s win also marked the second game in a row the Lady Bobcats have defeated a state-ranked squad. H-J came into last Friday’s game at No. 17 and Silsbee came into Tuesday’s game at No. 20. H-J was not ranked this past week and it would be hard to see Silsbee being in the top 20 next week all in thanks to these Lady Bobcats who are at No. 14 in the rankings. I will admit just like most sports fans should that rankings really do not mean much and the onlly one that matters is being No. 1 at the end of the season. They are still fun to look at and kick around. The Lady Bobcats had most of their troubles this season in tournaments, losing all three games they played in the Sulphur, La. Tournament. They are 4-for-4 since losing to the Sulphur Lady Tors on Dec. 29 with big wins of Hamshire-Fannett, Hardin-Jefferson and now Silsbee. Orangefield has its star power in two seniors, Kaylin Little and Laura Riddick. Little does the scoring and seems to never stop hustling while Riddick is the master of the dirty work. Riddick will get the tough rebound, block a shot, snare key steals and is also a threat to score at any time. Then there is the supporting cast which could be labeled as being one of the best around. Fellow starters Jessica Weldon, Allie Beach and Olivia Wagner have all come up huge this season. Bench players Shelby Poole, Marissa Wyatt and Aimee Scales give new coach Chris Jost exactly what he needs when he calls on them. The Lady Bobcats work together so well and know they can count on each other and that could be the difference between them and the rest of District 21-3A foes. Little and Riddick are not worried about giving up the spotlight and letting one of the younger players make the key plays down the stretch, see Tuesday’s game as an example. Little and Riddick were both out of the game by the 3:44 mark with five fouls. Although they were on the bench, it is easy to assume they had confidence in their teammates to get the job done against the Lady Tigers who were on the prowl at that point in the game. The underclassmen all did their jobs by making free throws, grabbing rebounds and playing sound defensen down the stretch as the Lady Bobcats held on to win by seven. And then their is Jost himself. The new guy on the block, coming over from Comanche High School. Jost was 60-39 at Comanche and reached the playoffs in all three seasons with one trip to the regional semifinals. Being able to play in such big games like the ones against the Lady Hawks and Lady Tigers is one of the major reasons Jost came over to Orangefield. The games are exciting, competitive and some of the best basketball the state has to offer. So far the Lady Bobcats are 3-0 in those games and now have a two game lead over Silsbee and H-J in the standings. Orangefield does not have time to get the big-heads and think the district championship is all but locked up. The Lady Bobcats must hit the road a few times in the second half of the district loop and two of the games are huge in Fannett and Sour Lake. Jost and Co. will be ready. This group just does not seem to realize rebuilding does not include making a push for that championship.

[Hidden Content] UCLA is asking fans to leave former coach John Wooden alone during home basketball games. The 97-year-old coach is a popular draw at his seat behind the Bruins' bench, with people forming a line to get his autograph any time he shows up. The "no autographs" request was announced Wednesday by UCLA at the request of Wooden's family. "It all wears on him," UCLA spokesman Marc Dellins said. "He just wants to be able to come and enjoy the games." Wooden gets around using a cane and is usually accompanied by his daughter. A lone security guard is on hand to keep the crowd orderly. Coach Ben Howland said he suggested a year or two ago that fans be asked to leave Wooden in peace. "It's long overdue," Howland said. "It's not an autograph signing session. He'd be there all day just doing that. He never says no to anybody about anything." Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press

Dugat plays big part in Baylor revival Dan Chamness Correspondent Published January 17, 2008 Baylor University spent the first part of the 2007-08 campaign beating up on non-conference teams. Now it’s the Big 12’s turn. Henry Dugat, a Baylor University guard and Dayton grad, scored in double figures in the Bears’ first two Big 12 games. In Tuesday night’s contest against Oklahoma State, Dugat poured in a team-leading 23 points, that included three 3-pointers. He also had five rebounds, a team-high four steals and two assists. “Henry played with a great deal of energy, not only on the offensive end, but he was also doing it on the defensive end,†said Baylor coach Scott Drew. “As a coach, that’s when you have got something really going. Henry gave it to us on both ends tonight.†In Baylor’s Big 12 opener last Saturday, Dugat scored 15 points, pulled down nine rebounds, dished out three assists and made two steals to help overcome Iowa State 74-67. He led Baylor in points, rebounds and assists, again hitting three treys. Baylor is 14-2 overall. “We came out focused in the second half,†Dugat said of the Iowa State contest. “We used the pressure to take them out of what they wanted to do and make them do what we wanted them to do, which was turn the ball over. At halftime, coach told us that we were not getting after them like we usually do on defense.†• Baytown Lee grad Cheto Cerda posted two wins in the Minnesota State University Alumni Open indoor track meet. The Wayne State University junior won the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 39.84 seconds. He was also a member of the winning distance medley relay team, which finished in 11:03.11. • Texas State-San Marcos got two-double digit performances from Corey Jefferson this week. The Lee College alum scored a team-high 18 points as the Bobcats lost a 95-48 battle to Northwestern State University. Jefferson, who hit 7 of 9 from the field, struck three times from beyond the arc. He also had a team-high four steals. In a 78-72 win over Central Arkansas, Jefferson finished with 12 points and four rebounds. The Bobcats are 8-7 overall and 1-1 in the Southland Conference. • Barbers Hill grad Josh Camp placed sixth in the triple jump at the University of Arkansas Invitational. Camp, a Baylor junior, recorded a leap of 44 feet, 1.5 inches. • Brian Ezeh, Blake Thompson and Jonathan Dixon, all Lee College grads, played extensively for Prairie View A&M in its 70-65 loss to Texas Southern University. Ezeh, who hit 6 of 8 from the field, finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Thompson tallied eight points and two rebounds, while Dixon added four rebounds. • Baytown Sterling grad Shaye Montgomery scored 10 points in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s 61-54 win over McNeese State, hitting a pair of 3-pointers. The TAMUCC player also had a team-high nine assists and five rebounds. • Mike White, an Indiana University player who prepped at Lee College, scored four points to help the Hoosiers put their third Big Ten notch on their belt. Indiana, currently ranked 10th in the most recent NCAA Division I poll, is 14-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten. • Crosby grad Tia Jackson, a Tulane University sophomore, has 14 points and 10 rebounds in her eight games played. In addition to her 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, she also has two assists. Tulane is 11-5 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA.

Gander soccer team gets SoHo payback From sports staff reports Baytown Sun Published January 17, 2008 Lee’s soccer team was scoring in the rain Tuesday night and hopes to keep raining goals when it plays at Westfield Friday night. The Ganders rebounded from a 3-0 halftime deficit for a rain-soaked 4-3 win over South Houston at Stallworth Stadium, avenging a bi-district shutout loss to the Trojans last year. Junior Luis Camacho led the way for the Ganders with a hat trick. With two Gander starters benched for disciplinary reasons, first-time varsity goal keeper Armando Torres gave up three first-half goals. But Torres settled in to his new position and had an outstanding night, keeping the Ganders in the game. The Ganders began their comeback 10 minutes into the second half when Edgar Sanchez got a cross past South Houston’s goalkeeper to Camacho for Lee’s first goal of the game. Five minutes later, Camacho took a deep pass from Patrick Christian to set up for his second goal of the game. Camacho scored his third goal on a Benito Huerta assist. Ulises Irias scored the winning goal with five minutes remaining in the game.

Seahawks battle hard, bow to Harvesters EASTFIELD 81, LAMAR PORT ARTHUR 75 By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News Eastfield College coach Anthony Fletcher proudly sounded as if owned a most unique Carl Parker Center distinction. When Fletcher's Harvesters sneaked out with an 81-75 survival Wednesday at Lamar State College Port Arthur, the coach of the Mesquite-based high-flying Eastfield squad reminded his listener of a fact that he could not forget. "This is the first time I've ever won a game here after two losses," Fletcher said. "I gave Lamar-Port Arthur its first win ever here." My, my... what a strange way of putting it. Anyways, Fletcher almost saw his Harvesters (15-5 and 2-1) gift-wrap another one. The Seahawks (8-9 and 1-1) battled back from a 13-point halftime deficit and led 69-65 with six minutes to play. That's before Eastfield sophomore guard Ryan Boyd calmly and casually stepped up and connected a pair of big shots and guided the Harvesters out of danger in the final couple of minutes. A former high school teammate of Portland Trail Blazers star LaMarcus Aldridge at Seagoville HS, Boyd led all scorers with 18 points and canned a 20-footer over LSCPA's Jemel Douriso to put Eastfield ahead for good -- 75-73 with 1:45 to play. Eastfield sank its next five free throws while Lamar Port Arthur was unable to make a few of its foul shots and Fletcher happily came away from the warm gym with a cool victory. Even though Eastfield has been ranked as high as No. 8 and entered the week No. 12 among NJCAA Division III schools, the Harvesters coach retained a healthy respect for the underdog Port Arthurans. "We had our second-leading scorer quit and another had knee surgery but they've got a good team," Fletcher said. "Every time I come to P.A., I get a little nervous." Nervous or not, Eastfield's coach arguably coached faster, taller, and more athletic players than Seahawks' coach Don Bryson. The Port Arthurans operated their offense under great duress all night because Eastfield's pressure tactics and long arms often clogged the passing lanes. Bryson realized just how difficult Eastfield's athleticism forced to LSCPA to function, especially down the stretch. "Our inability to run the offense and not block out really hurt us," the Seahawks coach said. "We didn't handle it well enough. They did a good job of halfcourt defense. It's not anything we shouldn't be able to handle. But you can't make passes like that. We made some lazy passes and then we let them bang us. "We played hard but we didn't take care of the ball down the stretch. We've got to play better defense. They're really quick. You turn your back on them and here they come... but we didn't play smart down the stretch." Five Seahawks finished in double figures, paced by Douriso's 16. Sam Stelly and Cody Guidry served as potent inside forces against the taller Harvesters with 14 and 13 respectively. George Williamson and Noah Cole added 11 and 10 points each. Stelly led LSCPA's rebounders with 11 followed by Cole with 10, Douriso and Guidry with eight each.
