Defense not enough for Ganders From sports staff reports Baytown Sun Published January 16, 2008 HUMBLE — The Lee Ganders played some lock-down defense against the District 21-5A leaders Tuesday night. But they couldn’t match the success on offense and fell to Humble 43-34. “We played extremely hard and we had a pretty good defensive effort as a team,†Gander coach Dote Williams said. “Darius Cooper and Eugene Mayes really stood out. “Darius played great, great defense and Eugene held their best player, Vincent Cavalier, to three points. But our inability to score caught up with us.†Humble, now 6-0 in 21-5A, led 18-11 at halftime and stretched that lead to 35-23 after three quarters. Cooper led all scorers with 15 points and Reggie Butler added seven for Lee, which is now 2-21 on the season, 0-6 in district. The Ganders host Channelview Friday night at 7 p.m.

Bruins dominate Titans By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News The News Sports Writer The Memorial Titans could not get their shots to fall, they could not get their free throws to fall and they could not keep from turning over the ball. It was a recipe for disaster and that’s exactly what happened on Tuesday night, as the West Brook Bruins dominated their way to a 62-47 victory in Port Arthur. The lead changed hands four times in the first quarter, but Marcus Malbrough’s bucket with 3:13 left in the quarter gave the Bruins a 9-8 advantage. That scored moved West Brook ahead for good, as they went on an 8-1 run to close the first frame with a 17-9 lead. Malbrough scored a game-high 13 points, leading four other Bruins in double-digits. Memorial was led by JeKore Tyler. He scored 17 points and was the only constant source of offense for the Titans. Tyler also provided Memorial with a little spark late in the fourth quarter when the Titans were trying desperately to make a come back. After a pair of free throws, Tyler made a steal and finished his great play with a dunk. That score capped a 10-2 run for Port Arthur and cut the game to 52-43, forcing the Bruins to take a timeout. After the timeout, Memorial continued to play smothering defense and Tyler ended up with another steal. Unfortunately, when trying to score, Tyler lost control of the ball and Beaumont recovered the long rebound. It was possibly the key rebound of the game because from that point, West Brook hit 10 free throws to close out the game. And in that stretch, the Titans scored just once. The only positive statistic Memorial led in was rebounding, as the Titans grabbed 34 rebounds to West Brook’s 31. With the loss, Port Arthur, who could never break the Bruins zone defense, falls to 14-10 overall and 4-2 in District 21-5A. Beaumont continued to force Memorial to shoot from outside but the Titans never found their stroke. Memorial made just one 3-pointer in the game. Tyler hit that trey with 1:49 left in the third quarter to make the score 41-29. Jordan Reno cut the score to 43-34 when he made a pair of free throws early in the fourth quarter. That was as close as the Titans got in the second half, as Beaumont answered immediately with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a rebound and put back bucket from Malbrough, who was also fouled on the play. -

Attacking NHS edges Kelly NEDERLAND -- Whether it's one side of Mid-County or the other, the Nederland and Port Neches-Groves boys soccer teams toughed out a pair of narrow victories over Beaumont schools Kelly and West Brook on this rainy Tuesday night. Nederland evened its record at 2-2 by claiming a 1-0 win over Kelly at Bulldog Stadium. Coach Rob Bledsoe welcomed a shutout from junior goalkeeper Tyler Vidrine. The Bulldogs scored the night's lone goal midway in the opening half when sophomore forward Hector Garcia converted a header. A crossing pass from Ryan Washburn assisted Garcia before Taylor Trahan's playmaking found Washburn in the corner. Bledsoe, the sixth-year NHS head coach, liked the work of his goalkeeper plus he welcomed his team's ability to attack. "I thought Tyler (Vidrine) had an outstanding game," Bledsoe said. "We attacked well the whole game. We did a good job of attacking. It made a big difference in the middle that Austin Wyble and Bay Calloway hustled so much on defense." -
Memorial shocks Lumberton in 4-3 comeback win HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER The Port Arthur News LUMBERTON -- By anyone's standards, Tuesday night has to rank as the most prestigious Golden Triangle soccer victory ever for Port Arthur's Memorial Titans. Trailing 3-1 in the second half, coach Brian Morgan's Port Arthurans rallied for three goals in the final 25 minutes and notched a rather shocking 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Lumberton at Raider Stadium. Regarded by the 20-4A pre-season favorite by many area observers and the 20-4A boys defending district champion, Lumberton led 1-0, watched Memorial even the score by half and regained a 3-1 lead early into the second half. That's when the Titans' senior forward Omar Zepeda turned into into high gear, scoring one header and assisting Ruben Diaz and Armando Rangel with two other goals. Memorial (1-0) never has claimed such a big win under Morgan, the second-year head coach, who was quick to praise Tuesday night's season-opening opponent. "We knew Lumberton could play," Morgan said. "They're a real good team. We were kinda down when they got ahead 3-1. It's really big the way we came from behind, but now we need to put together a couple of good practices this week and build on this win." Junior midfielder Saul Carillo tied the game at 1-1 with 10 minutes left in the opening half. Zepeda's assist to Diaz trimmed Lumberton's lead to 3-2 in the second half. Carillo's corner kick enabled Zepeda to cash in a header and tie the game 3-all with 19 minutes to play. Zepeda passed to Rangel for the go-ahead goal with 16 minutes left. The Titans will host North Brook next Tuesday night on the PAISD auxiliary field at 7 p.m.

No. 12 Lady Jags down Lady Bears, 78-43 Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Showing why they’re ranked No. 12 in the Class 4A state poll and perfect in District 22-4A, the Central Lady Jaguars forced the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears into a whopping 40 turnovers to post an easy 78-43 victory at the Bear Cave Tuesday night. The Lady Bears (6-16, 1-7) were as close as 7-7 in the first period but the Lady Jaguars (20-5, 8-0) went on a 12-0 surge to end the period and they never looked back. The Lady Jaguar inside duo of Katrina Harris and Erikka Harris were too much inside for the Lady Bears. Harris poured in a game-high 17 points and yanked down seven rebounds. Meanwhile, Walker scored all 14 of her points and snared all 11 of her rebounds in the first 16 minutes to lead the Lady Jags to a comfortable 44-19 cushion at intermission. Central outrebounded LC-M 26-10 in the first half. Turnovers hampered the Lady Bears throughout and they committed 13 alone in the first period that helped Central score the quarter’s last 12 points. Central, using Walker’s eight second-period points, went on a 25-12 spurt in the second period. The Lady Bears played well on defense at times as they forced Central into 24 turnovers of its own. However, Central was also too much for the Lady Bears on the boards. The Lady Jaguars had a 42-24 rebounding edge. Feisty guard Ellen Williams paced the Lady Bear attack with 15 points. She hit two three-pointers and scored five points in both the third and fourth quarters. Katie Harrell pumped in nine points for the Lady Bears. Hailey Christian contributed six points and a team-high six rebounds while Nardis McBride added five boards. Forward Alexia Pickett had a solid outing for the Lady Jags, scoring 13 points and yanking down six rebounds. Forward Ashley Antwine and guard Ashton Massey scored eight points apiece. Meagan Byrd tallied seven points and Brandi Buckley pulled down five rebounds. The Lady Bears were strong at the free-throw line, going 18-of-23 as Harrell nailed 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. The Lady Jaguars struggled a bit, going just 6-of-15. The Lady Bears look to bounce back Friday when they head to the Reservation to take on the Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians.

No. 14 Lady ’Cats hold off No. 20 Lady Tigers, 76-59 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — His two seniors on the bench for half of the fourth quarter and Silsbee’s Ang Green hitting for 38 points could not have been the game plan for Orangefield Coach Chris Jost had in mind Tuesday. It sure did work out well for the Lady Bobcats in Bobcats Gym. Led by the work of junior Allie Beach the No. 14 Lady Bobcats stayed poised down the stretch and defeated the No. 20 Lady Tigers, 76-59. The win gives Orangefield a two-game lead over both Silsbee and Hardin-Jefferson in the District 21-3A race. Beach struck for a team-high 29 points as Orangefield (17-9, 8-0) passers consistently found her open under the basket for easy lay-ups. All the points were critical and so were the key free throwing shooting of several underclassmen down the stretch. Sophomore Aimee Scales, freshman Marissa Wyatt and junior Olivia Wagner went 9-for-12 on late free throws to make sure the rally from the Lady Tigers (15-9, 6-2) came up short. Wagner finished the night wit 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Kaylin Little added nine points, six assists, six rebounds and four assists. Laura Riddick put in nine points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals and teammate Jessica Weldon added seven points and six steals. “Wow, how about that effort from our underclassmen tonight,†Jost said. “Our two seniors fouled out, Silsbee had us on the ropes and we could have easily crumbled. We got on the rebounds, hit our free throws and played great defense down the stretch. That is the mental toughness we strive four every day.†Silsbee’s Brittany Henry had 17 points and 13 rebounds while Green added 11 points in the loss. Orangefield carried a 61-46 lead into the fourth period before Green got seriously hot from the field. Green scored the Lady Tigers’ first nine points in the final frame before Cierra Wilson buried a three making it 64-58. Chelsye Tyler then hit a free throw before Green was sent back to the line at 5:02 when Little picked up her fifth foul. Green’s two free throws made it 64-61 Lady Bobcats. With 3:44 left in the game Riddick was called for her fifth foul and Tyler, who had 17 points, sank two more freebies making it 65-63. Silsbee would then get no closer. At the 2:23 mark Scales, who finished with six points and six rebounds, came up with a huge play off her own missed free throw. Scales hit the front-end of a one-and-one but miss the second and was able to grab the rebound. Orangefield came away with no points yet valuable time was ran off the clock. Wyatt, who had six points, then started the nice run of free throw shooting for the Lady Bobcats with 49.6 left in the game and the Lady Tigers could not close the gap. “We might have played even better tonight than we played the first go around,†Jost said. “Tonight Silsbee was at full strength and we were just able to get the job done. Last time we were able to hold Ang in check. Tonight she did whatever she wanted to do. She had a monster game and she is unbelievable. This was by far the best I have ever seen her play.†In the first go-around Orangefield limited Green, who recently signed on with Lamar University, to 15 points in a 74-69 Lady Bobcats’ victory. The Lady Bobcats stormed out of the gates in the first period by outscoring the Lady Tigers 20-13. Little had six points in the game’s first eight minutes while Riddick and Weldon added five. The second period belonged to Beach. Beach had 12 points in the second as Silsbee just did not have any answer for her presence down low in the paint. “Their (Silsbee) trapping defense left her open and she capitalized on it tonight,†Jost said. “She (Beach) has been huge for us in the run through district. Her play payed off huge for us tonight.†The Lady Bobcats took a 37-28 lead into the break and then it was Beach and Green each pointing up the points in the third. Both players hit for 12 points after half-time yet Silsbee could only gain one point on Orangefield in the third as the Lady Bobcats led 61-46. Silsbee out-rebounded Orangefield 44-37 while the Lady Bobcats won the turnover battle. The Lady Tigers had 16 turnovers while the Lady Bobcats had 12. The Lady Bobcats return to action Friday when they travel to face Jasper. -
