PA jumpers, Hemmings, Krautz among champions

PA jumpers, Hemmings, Krautz among champions By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND — Port Arthur Memorial rediscovered potential champion jumpers in all sizes and shapes Friday at Nederland’s very wet 44th Bulldog Relays. Port Neches-Groves dusted off a well-rested discus thrower. Nederland might just be grooming a special quarter-miler, while West Orange-Stark knows it owns a mighty good sprinter and those Orange County redshirts from Deweyville and Bridge City own bragging rights to high-caliber distance runners. An unwelcome drizzle and off-and-on showers became unwelcome intruders on this opening day of the Golden Triangle outdoor season. Barbers Hill also tried its best to spoil the party, too, by dominating the girls division with 161 points. There was plenty of interesting developments from Mid- and South County, though. Memorial finished second with 64 points behind boys team champ Beaumont Central at 101. Port Neches-Groves was a stout third with 59. Nederland and Memorial took third and fourth in the girls division with 86 and 71 points respectively. Whether they tried a 6-4 boy or a 5-2 girl, the Titans figured out how to win the long jump rather impressively. A pair of former Junior Olympic competitors earlier in this decade with the now-defunct Port Arthur Track Club, Terrell “Tay-Tay†Robertson and Craig Bailey, Jr. — a pair of 18-year-old seniors — looked good in their coming-out parties with winning marks of 17-3 3/4 and 22-2. “Tay-Tay†scratched on her competition’s first of four attempts and missed recording about a 17-9 by a hair. Her talent has been evident for awhile, now her dedication has been catching up to it. Bailey is not a fluke either. He went 22-0 last year at the Texas Southern Tiger Relays and kept first place going into the final jump. Besides that they’re both Memorial seniors and they’ve jumped together for half of their lives, Bailey and Robertson have another interesting common bond for now. They came into their season’s first meet without hardly doing any jumping before Friday. Memorial is expected to have the final touches on its new all-weather track — and that includes long jump facilities — completed by the end of this month. Until then, the Memorial tracksters will work out about three days a week on the Ty Terrell track at Lamar University in Beaumont. “I’ve just been running,†said Bailey, who also won the triple jump in 41-10 3/4. “I haven’t been doing any jumping... The new track ought to help a lot because I’ll be able to work more on my jumping.†“It was my first time to jump in a long time,†Robertson said. “I’ve just gotten to go out there and run and go for speed.†Oh well, if you can jump, you can jump.... PN-G senior Jake Hemmings — a star football player and two-time Super Team selection — learned if you can throw the discus in junior high, you can still throw it years later. Hemmings had not competed in the event since the eighth grade. He won the event at 135-4. His coach Carl Broussard believed Hemmings could be capable of throwing into the 140s or 150 feet. Three more athletes who definitely expect to improve — Deweyville’s Joe Dooley, Nederland’s Justin Krautz and West Orange-Stark’s Josh Gloston were victorious despite the yucky weather conditions. “The weather probably hurt my time (50.29) a little bit but it (the rainfall) probably helps to keep my mind off the race plus it’s a lot cooler,†Krautz said. -
Mid County Madness... Nederland vs PnG

Nederland pulls out 1-0 victory in OT By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND — A goal from the back of Ryan Washburn with 6:18 to play in the first half of overtime gave the Bulldogs a big 1-0 win over Port Neches-Groves in Friday night's District 22-4A soccer matchup at Prather Field. The lone goal of the night was far from a classic. Nederland's Jordan Landry sent an inbounds pass from the right side of the goal. His pass went into a host of players from each team but the Bulldogs had more guys and the tallest guy in Washburn standing nearest to the ball. Washburn just kind of backed his body into the pass, sending the ball into the top right corner of the goal. "We like to attack and when you are attacking as much as we were tonight, the idea is to hopefully get a play just like that, where the ball just bounces your way," said Nederland coach Rob Bledsoe. "We have a lot of goals from throw ins this year, so it's a situation we are used to. "Overall, I think we outshot them but they played great defense. This was a great victory for us and we are happy to have it." With the win, Nederland improves to 9-3-1 overall and 7-1-1 in district play, keeping sole possession of second place. The Indians, meanwhile, fall to 6-4-2 overall and 4-3-2 in league play. The Bulldogs will be at home on Tuesday when they play West Orange-Stark for the start of the second half of district play. PN-G will stay at its current home (Prather Field) for its next game, which comes Tuesday night against Silsbee. While the Dogs stayed on the offensive for most of the game, it was their defense that really made the difference. The Indians almost struck first in overtime but thanks to a great play from Jake Kemp, Nederland continued to keep PN-G scoreless. Standing next to goalie Tyler Vidrine, Kemp deflected a shot from Kris Halbert that saved the day for his Bulldogs. When the ball left Halbert's foot, everyone was thinking goal except Kemp, who maneuvered over toward the weak side of the net at just the right time to clear the shot. The Indians immediately gathered the deflection and ripped off another shot, but Vidrine caught the laser and punted the ball away. PN-G head coach Don Sandell said Nederland's defense was as dominating of a performance as he has ever seen. "They were a step quicker tonight," he said. "They were always in the right spot at the right time and they were always there just before our guys. We made some good adjustments that looked like they were going to work and they still stopped us. "They made it so difficult for us to get an open look or even get a shot off for that matter." -

Lady Bobcats bruise LaGrange Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader HUMBLE — When LaGrange took its first lead at 7-6 in the first quarter Friday it was easy to think the Orange Lady Bobcats had a game on their hands. So much for that idea. The Lady Bobcats went on a 12-0 run at that point and never looked back to the tune of a 65-35 win in the Class 3A Region III Area Round playoffs at Kingwood Park High School in Humble. The Lady Bobcats will now face Navasota next week as Navasota downed Silsbee 71-53 Friday. LaGrange (24-10) simply had no answer for Orangefield (23-10) senior guard Kaylin Little who poured in a game-high 36 points to go with seven steals, four assists and four rebounds. Little lit up the Lady Leopards for 10 points in the first period and another 14 in the second. "When her offense gets going, her defense then gets going," Orangefield Coach Chris Jost said. "She is just so explosive. LaGrange had no answer for her tonight." Dana Marrs was supposed to be the equalizer for the Lady Leopards yet the Orangefield defense held Marrs to just two points on two free throws, both coming in the fourth period. "We did a great job holding LaGrange's top scorer to just two points on two fourth period free throws," Jost said. "We followed our game plan on stopping her." Allie Beach put in six points for Orangefield while teammate Laura Riddick finished with six and Olivia Wagner added five points. Freshman Marissa Wyatt knocked down a three-pointer in the fourth and finished with five points while Jessica Weldon added four points. Beach and Riddick each had eight rebounds while Wagner snagged seven boards. LaGrange's Katy Scott had a team-high 13 points and 11 rebounds while Whitney Houston added 11 points in the loss. The Lady Bobcats' defense forced the Lady Leopards to 23 turnovers in the contest. Orangefield led 18-7 after the first period and then did not let up in the second before heading to half-time. The Lady Bobcats started the period on a 10-2 run to take a 28-9 advantage before Jasmine Lewis stopped the bleeding with a free throw. LaGrange closed to within 30-12 before Orangefield went on a 8-2 run to finish off the first period. Little had six points in the run as Orangefield led 38-14 at the break. The Lady Leopards did win the third period as Orangefield slowed down a bit after the break. LaGrange outscored Orangefield 10-8 in the third. "We certainly took care of business in the first half," Jost said. "We were scoring off of our defense. You really can't play much better against a playoff team than we did in the first half. I really expected a let up in the second half because of our lead. I can live with first halves like that all the way through the playoffs. Orangefield did finish strong in the fourth period as the Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Leopards 19-15 in the game's final eight minutes. Each team finished with 34 rebounds in the game. -
