  9. Pettitte to address media at 2 p.m. today Pitcher says in deposition his father got HGH from a trainer at gym NEW YORK — Andy Pettitte's father obtained the human growth hormone he supplied his son from a trainer who attended high school with the New York Yankees pitcher. Pettitte is set to address the media today at 2 p.m. to talk about the controversy. Kelly Blair, who owns a gym in Pasadena, Texas, was the source of the substance, the New York Daily News reported Sunday. Pettitte, who has admitted using HGH in 2004, told congressional attorneys that he received it from his father, Tom Pettitte, whose has had serious health problems. In his deposition, Pettitte said his father got the drugs from a trainer at a gym where he worked out but did not identify the trainer. The Daily News reported that Blair sold HGH and steroids to customers at 1-on-1 Elite Personal Fitness. Blair did not respond to the newspaper's requests for comment. Pettitte and Blair attended nearby Deer Park High School, east of Houston, at the same time; Blair was a football and track star. Pettitte's wife's brother married Blair's sister.

  14. Seniors leave holes in Eagle field lineup By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published February 18, 2008 MONT BELVIEU — Pitching is the name of the game and Barbers Hill is loaded. Led by Texas A&M signee Ross Hales, the entire Eagles rotation of four seniors have signed to play college baseball. While Gil Stalbaum feels truly blessed with the abundance of arms, the question mark for Barbers Hill will be offensive production. Colby Townley, Cameron Campbell and Derek Hulsey, offensive leaders of last year’s regional semi-finalist team, have all graduated, leaving a hole in the middle of the lineup that will have to be filled if the Eagles are going to make another deep playoff run. “Our biggest challenge will probably be finding outfielders that can hit varsity pitching,†Stalbaum said. “We are going to need consistency behind the plate and I don’t know if we will be able to score enough runs to win some close ballgames.†Against the pitching rotation of Hales, Kendall Thamm, Hunter Silva and Johnathan Kelley, opposing offenses will find runs hard to come by. “Our pitching staff is probably as good as it has ever been at Barbers Hill,†Stalbaum said. “We have some quality arms and we are deep. Several of those guys are getting a lot of attention from the scouts.†Leading the charge will be Hales, who at 6-4, 190, is still continuing to fill out. This off-season, the senior has increased his velocity and was recently timed at 91 miles per hour. Kendall Thamm will return as the No. 2 pitcher, giving Barbers Hill left-handers in the top two slots. This winter, Thamm signed with Angelina College. “He’s a workhorse and continues to improve,†Stalbaum said. “This offseason he has increased his velocity.†Silva is a fastball/slider pitcher that picked up the win in Barbers Hill’s elimination game against Vidor last season and has signed with San Jacinto Junior College. Kelley played a key role in the playoffs as a reliever and is pitching with a lot of confidence after signing with Galveston College. Barbers Hill has developed a strong tradition at catcher and it will fall upon Jake Ponder to carry on the tradition. Last season Ponder started at third base and led the team in RBIs. “He has looked good,†Stalbaum said. “It’s just a challenge for any high school catcher to receive the kind of arms he will see game in and game out.†Stalbaum welcomes back the starting tandem of Hales and junior Alex Rocha at first base. Hales will start at first when he is not on the mound and Rocha could see time in the outfield in that scenario. “Ross led the team in average last season and we are putting a lot of weight on his shoulders,†Stalbaum said. “I’m counting on Alex to have a big year for us and be more consistent.†Senior Clay Garner and junior Cody Clifton are locked in a battle at second base. Garner is more experienced at the varsity level but both have looked good in the preseason.Junior Tony Carmona will return as the starting shortstop. Carmona took over last season and acquitted himself well after Chase Barrera suffered a season-ending injury. This season, more will be expected of Carmona offensively. Silva will start at third base this season in place of Ponder. Silva saw limited time in the field last season but has played well at the position and has shown the ability to be a key contributor offensively. The outfield situation is muddled at this point as every position is up for grabs. Thamm and Rocha will fill right field while juniors Jay Burditt and Heath Padgett compete in center field. Sophomore Carter Smith and seniors Duddin Presnall, Colton Bay and Taylor Johnson are vying for the starting nod in left field. Sophomore Brian Meyer has been hitting the ball well and could see some time at designated hitter. The Eagles will be one of the favorites to compete for the District 21-4A title. Last season, Barbers Hill finished second in district behind New Caney but rallied in the playoffs to advance to the regional semifinals, where it fell to Montgomery. “Crosby is going to be tough. They have a lot of kids back and some pitching,†Stalbaum said. “Huffman plays us as well as anybody and New Caney has a lot of good players.†The Barbers Hill mentor also expects Galena Park and C.E. King to have an impact on the district race. But in the end it will come down to what happens in the playoffs. “We’ve traditionally turned it up in the playoffs,†Stalbaum said. “We would like to win district, but we compete well in the playoffs.â€

  17. C-USA officials investigating what happened after Memphis-UAB game MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Conference USA officials said Sunday they were investigating what happened after top-ranked Memphis' 79-78 victory over UAB in Birmingham, where the Tigers were showered with debris after avoiding an upset. Cups, water bottles and pompoms were thrown by fans in the UAB student section as the Tigers were being escorted off the court toward their dressing room Saturday night. Pierre Niles AP Photo/Hal Yea Pierre Niles was among the players restrained after the Tigers' 79-78 Saturday win at UAB. Debris was thrown by fans in the student section as the Tigers were escorted off the court. "We are currently in the process of gathering all the information about the actions occurring at the conclusion of Saturday night's Memphis-UAB game," the league said in a statement. "We have been in contact with administrators at both UAB and Memphis. "Sportsmanship and the well-being of our student-athletes, staff and fans are among our highest priorities." The league did not have a timetable on any decision or possible punishment. The Southeastern Conference fined Vanderbilt $25,000 in February 2007, when students rushed the court after upsetting then-No. 1 Florida in the school's second violation of the league's sportsmanship policy. Officials for Memphis and UAB did not immediately return telephone messages left by The Associated Press on Sunday afternoon. Memphis coach John Calipari said after the game he expected such a sold-out environment to be heated. "Students do that. What, do you expect the students to be happy? They were into it, and all I told our guys was just get off the floor. You don't deal with it. You think they're going to kiss you on the lips? You just beat them in a tough, hard game," Calipari said. Memphis (25-0) remained perfect by outscoring UAB 9-1 in the final 1:23. Robert Vaden missed an off-balance 3-pointer, and Lawrence Kinnard's shot in the paint went in. A few of the Tigers walked toward the other end and appeared to be talking back to fans who crowded the end of the court. Birmingham police officers held onto several Tigers as they walked off the court and toward their dressing room. Officials were busy reviewing the replay, which showed the shot left his hands after the final second had ticked off the clock.
  18. Lady Dogs beat Lady Indians in shootout By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND — Port Neches-Groves and Nederland's District 22-4A matchup in girl's soccer was moved up to a 3:30 start because of the scare of the bad weather to come on Friday night. The weather did come, but not before Nederland defeated the Lady Indians in a 2-1 shootout where the Lady Dogs scored three shootout goals to PN-G's one shootout goal to break the 1-1 tie and claim the victory. The Bulldog's fifth shooter, Tayler Carlson made the decisive goal when she looped a shot over PN-G goalie Breane Martin to give her team two more goals than PN-G earned in the shootout. With the goal advantage, the Lady Indians final shooter was not needed and Nederland improved to 10-3-1 overall and 7-1 in District 22-4A. The Lady Tribe, meanwhile falls to 8-5 overall and 6-2 in league play. PN-G took more shots on goal throughout the game but Nederland used the philosophy of one shot, one kill on Friday night. The Lady Dogs broke the 0-0 score when Lindsey Bombek netted a penalty kick with 33:44 to go in the second half. The Tribe fought back, however and continued to pour shots on Nederland's freshman goalie Bianca Garza, who was finally beaten when PN-G's Marisa Elam scored off a double reflection late in the second half to knot the game at 1-1. In that series alone, Garza had blocked two outstanding shots, including a penalty kick from PN-G's Victoria Williams. The Tribe fired off another shot but again Garza was there to deflect the ball away. This time, however, Garza couldn't recover and Elam sent the ball into the back of the net. "She was just great back there," said Julie Johnson of her freshman goalie. "She has such a great attitude, she works hard, she's a great athlete and that all showed tonight. We couldn't have won the game without her." In the shootout, both teams were blanked through the first two shooters but Nederland, who opened the shooting, scored first when Megan Melancon beat Martin. PN-G missed its third attempt and then Nederland's Jacie Bell scored to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage in the shootout. The Lady Indians' Brittany Ansel responded, however and got past Garza to close the shootout gap to 2-1. But that was as close as the Tribe would come, as Carlson made her shot to bury the Indians. Nederland travels to West Orange-Stark or its next game, which comes Tuesday. PN-G stays at Prater Field to host Silsbee on Tuesday night for its next game.
