Lady Bobcats turn eyes to Lady Leopards Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats start their playoff push tonight and Coach Chris Jost is ready. The Lady Bobcats will face the La Grange Lady Leopards at 7 p.m. at Humble Kingwood Park in the Class 3A Region III area round playoffs. LaGrange defeated 24-3A runner-up Stafford, 64-55, in the bi-district round Monday night. “I am excited,†Jost said. “The team is also excited. They are ready to play somebody. This is a fun group and we are just ready to finally get after another team.†Orangefield (22-10) is fresh off a 13-1 march through District 21-3A which ended in the Lady Bobcats first out-right district championship since 1992. The Lady Bobcats only district loss came in their last game against the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks, who face Wharton at 7 p.m. tonight in Deer Park. The other 21-3A team left, Silsbee, faces Navasota at 7 p.m. in Cleveland. The Silsbee/Navasota winner will face Orangefield/LaGrange next week in the regional quarterfinals. LaGrange (24-9) was on a 14-game winning streak before the Christmas break and then went 6-4 in district play behind Navasota and Smithsville. The Lady Leopards led by Dana Marrs who finished with 33 points, 18 coming off free throws, against Stafford. Marrs averages about 18 points per game. “We definitely want to put pressure on her and make the rest of her teammates beat us,†Jost said. “She is a deceptive player. She is not super quick but can drive and is also a great passer. She is definitely the one that makes them go.†Orangefield on offense will look to senior Kaylin Little who leads the Lady Bobcats in scoring while fellow senior Laura Riddick and juniors Olivia Wagner and Allie Beach have also shined this season. Point guard Jessica Weldon has had a superb junior season running the show while Marissa Wyatt, Aimee Scales and Shelby Poole come up huge for Jost off the bench when called upon. “LaGrange is mainly a half-court, man-to-man defense,†Jost said. “We are going to have to continue to execute and get high percentage shots. If Marrs is on Kay-K, I think we will have some mis-matches in other places. Our pressure on defense should also give them some problems.†One thing working in LaGrange’s favor is the experience the team has already seen in the playoffs. “They already have a playoff game under their belt,†Jost, whose team has not played since Feb. 5, said. “This will be a new experience for several of our players. Our girls play so hard together though. Our team chemistry has been outstanding and that was a major part of our success through district.†Directions: To get to Kingwood Park, take I-10 to Beaumont. Take Highway 90 West. In Dayton, turn right on North Cleveland Street and then turn left on 1960. In Kingwood, turn right onto West Lake Houston Parkway (go 5.6 miles). Turn left onto North Park Drive (go 1.3 miles). Turn left to stay on Woodland Hills Drive and Kingwood Park High is located at 4015 Woodland Hills Drive.

U.S. says Bonds failed steroids test after homer mark SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds tested positive for steroids in November 2001, just a month after hitting his record 73rd home run of the season, U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday. The allegation came in a legal filing in his steroid perjury case that referred to Bonds' long-time trainer, Greg Anderson. "At trial, the government's evidence will show that Bonds received steroids from Anderson in the period before the November 2001 positive drug test, and that evidence raises the inference that Anderson gave Bonds the steroids that caused him to test positive in November 2001," U.S. Attorney Joseph Russoniello wrote. The U.S. government made the assertion in a document that asked a federal court to reject Bonds' motion last month to dismiss the charges that he lied about past steroid use. In December, the record seven-time National League Most Valuable Player pleaded not guilty to lying to a federal grand jury in 2003 when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. He testified in the BALCO sports steroid case, which ended up jailing his personal trainer, Anderson, and the head of the BALCO lab near San Francisco. The latest government motion also referred to a question by a prosecutor during the BALCO case to "determine why Bonds apparently tested positive for anabolic steroids in November 2000." To date, prosecutors have revealed little about the details they have in the case against Bonds, the greatest hitter of his era long dogged by suspicions about doping.
