Dogs' tennis dominant in 22-4A By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News VIDOR -- She never picked up a racket before high school. Soccer served as her winter recreation. Yet Wednesday afternoon, Rachel Binagia brightened the clouds. The second-seeded Nederland junior captured the District 22-4A girls singles championship, easily defeating No. 1 seed Jessica Brown of Lumberton, 6-1, 6-1 in the finals. A straight-A student with a coachable approach to a very cerebral sport, Binagia did exactly what her coach instructed her to do in the championship match. She moved her larger opponent around the court. That was going to become Brown's weakness, Bulldogs coach Jorge Lopez determined. And it turned out to be true. Binagia almost finished off Brown as quickly as Nederland freshman Grant Lopez completed his boys singles title match, defeating junior teammate Aaron Elizondo, 6-0, 6-1 at the plush Vidor High School courts. Joined in Nederland's crowded winner's circle were the boys 22-4A doubles champions Cody Mays and Ben Wiedenfeld. The Mays-Wiedenfeld tandem outlasted fellow Nederlanders Nick Duplan and Jimmy Hoang, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Two more Nederland doubles teams advanced as district runner-up entrants at the 4A Region III tennis championships Apr. 24-25 at Sam Houston State's McAdams Tennis Center. Unseeded Jordan Chandler and Kayla Ferguson qualified for regional girls doubles while the NHS duo of Spencer Coles and Jeanelle Stevens entered regional mixed doubles eligibility by defeating fellow Nederlanders Holly Hodge and Adam Weaver in a straight-set playback eliminator, 6-0, 7-5. With four seniors of the caliber of Duplan, Wiedenfeld, Weaver, and Hoang, Bulldogs' coach Jorge Lopez will lose more leadership than it might seem. Yet new faces keep filling Nederland's tennis empire year after year. Rachel Binagia would qualify as a perfect example of that constant new talent to enter Lopez's tennis Doghouse. Binagia played soccer all winter and contributed a year ago as an alternate. "She came a long way in a year," Lopez said in amazement on Wednesday. "She never picked up a racket until she was a freshmen here, but she's a straight-A student." Lopez may believe that Binagia's more limited amount of on-court time in the last few months caused the NHS junior to be seeded second instead of first in the girls singles draw. The lower seeding never diminished Rachel's confidence at all. "I was a little bit nervous but I kinda thought that I would do well," Binagia said. "I thought it (the championship match) would a little bit tougher. But I did really good on my serves... It feels great (being a district champion)." The howling 25 mile-an-hour winds from the southeast were a bit stronger but rather familiar to Nederland's players. "We've had some days with the wind like this before," new 22-4A boys singles champion Lopez said. Lopez's opponent, Elizondo, seemed bothered by a tender arm more than he acted flustered by Lopez or the tricky winds. Binagia never wilted in the wind either. She just wished she had been able to summon a sharper backhand.

Patriot coaching hires set for Monday By Dave Rogers Published April 10, 2008 Goose Creek Memorial head coach Bret Boyd says he and principal Al Richard will have nearly a complete slate of coaches to present to the school board at its meeting Monday. “I have a lot of names in place, about 90 percent of all of our coaches,†Boyd said. “There’s still a few we need some applications on, a few head coaches.†The coach, who was hired away from Killeen Ellison to be Memorial’s first head football coach/campus athletic coordinator, said he had settled on all but three of his head coaches for boys’ and girls’ sports. Two who haven’t been hired, he said, are head coaches for baseball and softball. The third head coaching job still up in the air is reported to be tennis. Several of those who will coach at the first-year school next year will be current district employees who are just transferring inside the district. Those who are already under contract to the Goose Creek district do not have to be voted on by the board members, but Boyd and principal Al Richard say they will do it anyway, as a courtesy. “It’s not like we have a big secret,†Boyd said. “But if you were on the school board, you wouldn’t want this coming out until you were told about them. “Everybody who has been transferred to or agreed to be hired at the new high school will be hired at that time (Monday).†The Patriot football coach said he has made job offers and handshake agreements with all but two of the men who will coach the school’s football team. “I still have a couple of positions I need to hire, but I’m conducting interviews every day,†Boyd said. He explained that he didn’t want to hire a baseball or softball coach until the end of the current seasons. Those are the only two sports who haven’t reached the end of district play for this school year. Boyd also reported that he had filled one of Memorial’s two open football dates that were created by the recent merger of Forest Brook and Smiley. He has booked Bellaire Episcopal as his team’s third opponent for the fall.

Krautz roars to gold in 400, 800 DISTRICT 22-4A TRACK & FIEL By Jerry Michalsky The News Sports Correspondent DAYTON -- After taking first place in the 800-meter run Wednesday night, Justin Krautz wanted to make it two in a row and capture the 400-meter dash. Krautz, a Nederland junior, had the confidence and the will to win the 400, but he did not know he was going to run an all-time best in the District 22-4A track and field championships. After defeating Ozen's Frederick Granger in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.81, Krautz ran a 49.44 in the 400 to defeat Javon Dartez of Ozen for the district championship. The two first-place finishes helped the Nederland boys capture third place in the district standings behind Central who won the boys side and Ozen who finished second. The top three finishers in each event advanced to the 4A Region III track and field championships on Apr. 25 and 26 at Huntsville's Sam Houston State Bowers Stadium. "In the 400 we were close coming around the final turn (Krautz and Granger) then I went ahead and I knew it was over," said Krautz. "In the preliminaries I ran a 50.41 so it was nice to shave a second off my run." "I have one more year to work on my times and get better," added Krautz. For now, Krautz has improved his Port Arthur News Honor Roll best time. He already had been the Golden Triangle's leader in the event with a 49.72. Senior Matt Johnson of Port Neches-Groves also turned in a nice meet with a first-place finish in the boys triple jump and then winning the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.99 to edge out Cory McGee of Vidor. The Indians finished fifth on the boys side with 61 points. The Lady Bulldogs finished third in the girls division with 108-points behind first place Ozen and Central. Nederland racked up 24 points in the shot put alone as Reagan Richard threw 36-7. Teammates Shaquirra Malveaux and Alyssa Remo finished second and third respectfully. Port Neches-Groves finished fifth with 53-points. Besides Krautz's best-ever time in the open quarter, three other Golden Triangle-best times were established during Wednesday night's windy running finals in Bronco Stadium. The 22-4A champion Ozen Lady Panthers clocked an area-best 1:42.81 in the 800-meter relay with a team of Yoshana McEachin, Ebony Bourgeois, Alexis Vaults and A'Lexus Brannon sharing the honors. Another strong member of that Ozen girls team, junior Sojourner Brown, recorded the area's fastest time in the girls open quarter, running a 58.00. Brown had owned the previous area best, 58.79.

Backe, Pujols engage in heated exchange at BP Bad blood stems from Cardinals slugger's slide into home plate Tuesday Astros pitcher Brandon Backe and St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols exchanged words on the field prior to tonight's game at Minute Maid Park and had to be separated by Astros manager Cecil Cooper. The incident stemmed from a play in the eighth inning of Tuesday's game when Pujols slid into Astros catcher J.R. Towles at home plate, knocking him down. Pujols called the clubhouse 30 minutes following the Cardinals' 5-3 win and apologized for taking out the catcher. As the Astros were leaving the field following batting pratice today, Pujols and Backe got into a confrontation. "All there was to it was I just thought last night wasn't a very good play, and that's all there is to it," Backe said. "It's over with. Everything is said and done. He has apologized to Towles and everything's fine. He just talked to me today acting like I was pressing on about it. I don't understand where he's coming from." Pujols said the incident is a non-issue. "I already apologized and it's over with," he said. "He had a problem with me calling over there (to the clubhouse)." Backe said Pujols approached him as Backe was coming off the field. "It's apparent we don't like each other, and that's OK," he said. "There's plenty of other people I don't like in this game. It doesn't matter. That's just baseball, that's the way it goes. The competition between he and I just escalated, and it's no big deal. That's what makes if fun." Towles didn't have a problem with Pujols' slide. "He apologized to me and I accepted his apology," Towles said. Cooper didn't want to discuss the incident, but Cardinals manager Tony La Russa issued a warning to Towles prior to the incident between Pujols and Backe. "I thought Albert did a fantastic job sliding to take his legs out," La Russa said. "The kid is not giving anybody room to slide, so that's what we teach. Slide in and take the legs out. He's going to get blasted one of these days."

Hurricane Researcher Predicting "Well Above Average" Season SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A noted hurricane researcher predicted Wednesday that rising water temperatures in the Atlantic will bring a "well above average" storm season this year, including four major storms. The updated forecast by William Gray's team at Colorado State University calls for 15 named storms in the Atlantic in 2008 and says there's a better than average chance that at least one major hurricane will hit the United States. An average of 5.9 hurricanes form in the Atlantic each year. "The Atlantic is a bit warmer than in the past couple of years," said Phil Klotzbach, a member of the forecast team. "that is something we would like to keep an eye on." Gray had projected seven hurricanes with three major storms in a preliminary forecast in December. One of the most closely watched hurricane forecasters, Gray has been issuing hurricane predictions for more than 20 years. But he and others have been criticized in recent years for having forecasts that were off the mark. Gray's team says precise predictions are impossible, and the warnings raise awareness of hurricanes. "We have not been ashamed of our forecast failures. It is the nature of seasonal forecasting to sometimes be wrong," Klotzbach said in a telephone interview from the Bahamas, where the team announced the forecast at a weather conference. The 2007 Atlantic season saw 15 named storms, six of which became hurricanes. Two were major storms. Before the June-November season, U.S. government scientists predicted 13 to 17 named storms and six hurricanes, three to five major. Gray was further off, forecasting 17 named storms, including nine hurricanes, five of them major. U.S. government forecasters issue their seasonal outlook in late May. National Hurricane Center director Bill Read, who is in his first year on the job, has said he would prefer to characterize the season in general terms - as above average, average or below average - instead of trying to forecast a precise number of storms. "It doesn't matter what the numbers are," center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said Wednesday, repeating a center mantra that it takes only one powerful storm to make it a bad season. ---- Associated Press Writer Jessica Gresko in Miami contributed to this report.
