  1. Kyle Busch bolts from final pit to claim 2nd straight Nationwide race AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Kyle Busch beat Carl Edwards out of the pits on their final stop, then held off the Kyle Busch got a fast start out of the final pit and beat Carl Edwards by mere car lengths to clinch a win at Phoenix on Friday night. Busch, who got his first Nationwide victory of the season last week in Texas, dominated, leading 133 of the 202 laps. But Edwards wrested the lead from Busch on lap 159 and steadily pulled away, building a lead of more than 3 seconds before debris brought out the sixth of nine cautions on lap 178. The leaders pitted a lap later and Busch's Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota barely beat Edwards' Roush Fenway Racing Ford onto the track and held the lead, although Edwards did nose ahead momentarily on lap 197 before the final caution came out on lap 199 when Jeff Burton hit the wall. That necessitated one more restart and Busch was able to hold off Edwards by about two car-lengths for his 13th Nationwide win and second in a row at Phoenix. "He had a great, great car and it was just a great night for us," Busch said. "Luckily, we kept getting those cautions and we kept getting a little two-lap jump on him. He had a better car on longer runs. We got good restarts and it was good he gave me a lot of room to race him." Busch, who moved from fifth to third in the season points, said the other key to this victory was getting out of the pits first on the last stop. "It was much easier trying to race up front than having to pass him," Busch noted. Edwards agreed, saying, "He got us off pit road and that hurt us a little bit. "I had the fastest race car out there tonight," he added. "Circumstances put us second. It's too bad somebody has to finish second in a race like this. I don't think I made any mistakes or could have done anything differently. I just needed another lap." Before leaving the postrace press conference, Edwards, who has three victories in seven Sprint Cup events heading into Saturday night's Phoenix race, said, "Tell [busch] I'm coming for him tomorrow." Denny Hamlin finished third, followed by former series champion Kevin Harvick, David Ragan, Mike Bliss and Stephen Leicht. Series leader Clint Bowyer, who fell from fifth to 13th when he was penalized late in the race for speeding on pit road, wound up eighth and now leads Edwards by just 24 points. 6. Lady Mustangs can’t keep up with Lady Broncos By Corey Roepken The Daily News Published April 12, 2008 ROUND ROCK — It took less than six minutes for the second of two Class 4A state semifinal soccer games to change faces on Friday. It will take much longer than that for the Friendswood Lady Mustangs to forget about it. Friendswood scored the only first-half goal, but a flurry of second-half offense propelled McKinney Boyd to a 3-1 victory at the Round Rock ISD Athletic Complex. Boyd (24-2-1) will play Wichita Falls Rider (30-0-1) for the state title today at 4 p.m. Friendswood (24-2-5) fell short of a championship in its third straight trip to the state tournament. The Lady Broncos scored all of their goals in a span of 5 minutes, 26 seconds. The first came in the 53rd minute, the second in the 55th minute and the third in the 59th minute. “None of us can really believe how quickly they came back,†junior sweeper Kristen Bowen said. “We had a six-minute breakdown. For a while, we lost ourselves, and that’s all they needed. It was such frenzy.†Several players said the team kept its sanity up until Boyd scored the equalizer on a penalty kick. Boyd’s Lauren Katada won a foul inside the penalty area as she stepped inside a Friendswood defender. Katherine Cox converted the penalty to give the Lady Broncos all the momentum. Cox got the assist on the winning goal two minutes later. She served a 45-yard free kick into the 6-yard box. Friendswood goalkeeper Lauren Kahre (seven saves) came off her line to punch it away, but it got over her head. Boyd’s Kelly Monogue finished into the open net. Four minutes after that, Cox scored again on a shot from the bottom right corner of the penalty area. Her acute-angle shot floated over Kahre and went into the net off the far post. Boyd’s second-half dominance was similar to the success it found during the first 20 minutes of the first half. The Lady Broncos had little trouble holding the run of play during that time. As a result, it took away Friendswood’s strength — the midfield. “It seemed like they had so many more people than we did. We couldn’t keep up,†senior midfielder Katelyn Kaspar said. “We were playing really hard, but we were all dehydrated and we were all exhausted. We just all fell apart. But there is no way they should have had three goals in six minutes.†Friendswood righted itself after the opening 20 minutes. Boyd appeared ready to take the lead in the 19th minute when it had a chance at a penalty kick. Kahre saved the low shot, though, to turn things around. The Lady Mustangs didn’t need the momentum for long before they took the lead. Sophomore forward Annalisa Hall beat two defenders along the left touchline and served a cross into the penalty area. Boyd cleared the ball directly to Friendswood senior Stephanie Stack about 25 yards from the goal. Stack served a ball into the 6-yard box, and Campbell chested it past the keeper for the lead. Kaspar almost made it a two-goal lead a moment later with a shot off the outside of her right foot. Boyd goalkeeper Jessica Gilchrist had to punch it away from the far post. The first-half turnaround, Bowen said, was as a result of the Lady Mustangs figuring out the best method of attack. “We knew we could beat them on the outside and on diagonal balls,†Bowen said. “As long as we were getting it to our space and to our feet, there was definitely a way to beat them on the outside.†Friendswood coach Laura Peter said the team had a good talk at halftime and emphasized switching fields with diagonal balls. Unfortunately, Peter said, the Lady Mustangs never got going with that strategy after halftime. She added that some of the players began to turn on one another and that the resulting frustration after giving up the tying goal was too much to overcome. “We should have been able to keep focus and not get down on ourselves,†Bowen said. “We could have started over at 0-0 and gone from there just like in the first half. You could tell right after they scored we had a breakdown. I wish that would not have happened.â€
  7. Dogs beat up Indians By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News PORT NECHES — The Nederland Bulldogs looked like a brand new baseball team in Friday night's 6-3 win over the Port Neches-Groves Indians. All season, Nederland has been plagued with inconsistencies at the plate and on the mound. Friday night was completely different, as Nederland put together a four run, second inning off losing pitcher Mitchell Todd. With two outs, Trey Terracina doubled and then moved to third on a single by Ryan Brady. Todd loaded the bases by plunking Adam Broussard. Then with the bases full of Dogs, Jordan Pitts slammed a double into the right field gap to bring in all three runners. Pitts advanced to third on a wild pitch and in an attempt to put out Pitts out at third, Kane Benoit could not handle a throw down from catcher Jon Carnahan. Those two errors sent Pitts home, giving Nederland an early 4-0 advantage. Pitts proved to be the winning run as PN-G only scratched together three runs on three hits. With the win, Nederland improves to 11-10 overall and 6-4 in District 22-4A. The Bulldogs next game comes Tuesday when they host Ozen, which is also 6-4 in league play after beating Little Cypress-Mauriceville 5-3 on Friday night. After Friday's results, PN-G is tied with Vidor for the district's top spot with an 8-2 league mark. LC-M is at third place with a 7-3 record and Nederland and Ozen are desperately trying to claw back into the playoff picture. Each team has four games left on the schedule. With the loss, PN-G falls to 16-5 overall and evens the season series with Nederland. The Indians travel to Lumberton on Tuesday for their next game. After Nederland's Jude Vidrine singled in Kirby Bellow with two outs in the fifth, the Tribe was facing a 5-0 defecit. That's when the Indians finally found some success against Josh Dean, who was the winning pitcher on the night. Dean tossed five innings of two hit ball. He surrendered only one earned run (three total), struck out six and did not allow a hit until Blake Reyenga pooched a bunt single in the fourth inning.
