Reports: Rose will declare for NBA draft this week The Commercial Appeal and WPTY-TV both cited sources close to the Memphis program in reporting that Rose, who averaged 14.9 points and 4.7 assists per game in the regular season and 20.8 points in six NCAA tournament games, would declare his intent to enter the draft. the Tigers finished national runners-up to Kansas. WPTY and cable news channel CNBC also reported that Rose is close to signing with agent Arn Tellem. When asked about the possibility of signing Rose, Tellem's agency, Wasserman Media Group, declined to comment, according to WPTY's report.

Roc to assist in Seahawks' search By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News Meet the newest consultant in Lamar State College-Port Arthur's search for a basketball coach. He's Port Arthur native and Lamar Cardinals head basketball coach Steve Roccaforte. Through two seasons at LU-Beaumont, Roccaforte is a former LU student in health and kinesiology under former LU teacher and current LSC-PA athletics director Bill Worsham. The bond between the two has remained solid over the years and Roc has expressed a willingness to assist Worsham in whatever capacity is deemed necessary in the Seahawks' efforts to replace Don Bryson. The only men's head basketball coach in the program's four-year history, Bryson announced his retirement at the end of the 2007-08 season. LSC-PA plans to act swiftly because it is entering the extremely competitive NJCAA Division I level's Region XIV next winter in men's basketball, as it already is in women's softball. The school's Human Resource department compiled a list of applicants which was provided to The Port Arthur News on Monday. Worsham hoped that Roccaforte and Bryson would assist his efforts in narrowing down the field to a group of eight to 10 semifinalists. The Seahawks athletics director hoped to be able to publicly provide a list of two to five finalists by Apr. 25. How willing is Roccaforte to assist in Lamar-Port Arthur's efforts? That's up to Worsham. "Roc and I have agreed that I will bring the (application) packets to him and let him review the names," Worsham said. "I talked to him about that last Monday night. He was straight-forward in saying that he didn't wish to make a specific recommendation." An on-campus committee will assist Worsham in making a recommendation to LSC-PA President Dr. Sam Monroe. That recommendation may come as soon as Apr. 25, too. The Seahawks' head basketball coach was posted at the end of March and was listed with a salary of $42,000 to $48,000. Worsham said he had visited with at least 15 interested prospects over the phone about the position. "They feel it's an outstanding opportunity to put together a good program," Worsham said. Roccaforte downplayed his role as a consultant but accented his willingness to assist if necessary. "Really and truly, I'm not involved that much," Roccaforte said. "But I have remained good friends over the years with Bill Worsham and Dr. Monroe and I told them, 'whenever you get a list, I'll do whatever you want me to do'. "I'm sure they know what's best for their situation." The following names have been submitted to The News as applicants for LSC-PA's head basketball coaching position:

Sampere rewarded for his doggedness in overcoming injury By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News It has been a long road for Ryan Sampere this school year. He has gone from the starting quarterback, who led his Nederland Bulldogs to an improbable 26-14 lead over Brenham (including four touchdowns), to having a severely broken ankle that required surgery, pins and four months of rehabilitation. Breaking his ankle two minutes shy of the fourth quarter in the first game of the 2007 football season, wasn't the dream Sampere had for his final year as a high school athlete; but after signing to play college baseball with Galveston College on Monday afternoon, some dreams have come true for the right-handed pitcher, third baseman. "It was tough," he said. "It took a long time to recover and it was tough not being able to play football. I've always loved both sports. Then I started worrying if I would even be ready for the start of baseball season." Sampere said he just stopped thinking about it, went 100 percent and things fell in place. "Everything is fine now and I'm ready to play at the next level," he said. "It was a lot of hard work but it's all better now." Sampere has played with the varsity since his sophomore season. This year, he has a .337 batting average and has posted a 3-2 pitching record with two saves and an ERA under 3.50. Sampere also has the Bulldogs in the middle of the District 22-4A playoff hunt. He picked up both of his saves last week in crucial games. The first came in a 5-4 win over Central. The second save came against the first place Port Neches-Groves Indians. Nederland beat PN-G 6-3 to improve to 6-4 in league play and is just one game behind the third place Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin' Bears. "He's had an outstanding career here," said head baseball coach Cody Robbins. "He has been a big contributor every year but to think what he has had to come back from this year — and he is having a great senior year — we're just really proud of him. "He has accomplished a lot. I'm just really proud that he is going to get that chance to play at the next level. A lot of kids don't get that opportunity, but for a kid who has had to battle back from that kind of injury, it's really good for him." Athletic Director and head football coach Larry Neumann said the culmination from the night Sampere helped lead Nederland to a 29-28 victory over Brenham until now, “is just a tremendous tribute to his hard work and the kind of young man he is. "I know this is something that will stay with him for the rest of his life and the experience he has gone through to get to this point, I know all that is going to stay with him. Overcoming it all is just a great achievement for him. "I'm really happy he is getting the opportunity to play college ball." Galveston College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and plays in the Region XIV conference.

Rockets fail to clinch homecourt in 105-96 loss to Jazz SALT LAKE CITY – As eerily and disconcertingly familiar as it looked, the Rockets left Utah with a more troubling thought. In a few days, they might be back. The Rockets’ 105-96 loss to the Utah Jazz on Monday will likely cost them homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs should they meet the team with the NBA’s best home record again to start the post-season. But beyond even losing for the seventh time in eight games in EnergySolutions Arena, including the three games lost in last season’s first round, they lost the way they had so often when playing the Jazz on the road. They had several long offensive breakdowns, stretches long enough for the Jazz to take control of the game. Rather than taking the Jazz from behind to a win, they allowed them to play from in front for most of the night, and by as much as 21. The Rockets did give themselves a late, longshot chance, outscoring the Jazz, 8-2, to pull within seven in the last minute. But Tracy McGrady, who had 22 points but made just 7 of 21 shots, missed a 3-pointer with 53 seconds left. The Rockets fouled Kyle Korver, a 91.3 percent free throw shooter, and he iced the win at the line. With the loss, the Jazz moved into a tie with the Rockets in the race for homecourt advantage should they meet again in the first round of the playoffs beginning this weekend, with the Jazz taking the head-to-head tie-breaker. The Rockets end the regular season Wednesday against the Clippers. The Jazz will play the Spurs. Heading into the regular-season finale, it was all the Rockets could do to keep from being completely blown out. Trailing by 15 at halftime, the Rockets were lifeless defensively to start the second half and quickly fell behind by 21. But with the Jazz holding a 72-51 lead, the Rockets scored the next nine points, all at the line, to close to within 12 with the Jazz protesting every whistle. All that did, however, was incite the Jazz to turn up the defensive pressure again. In their next four trips down the floor, the Rockets turned it over three times with their only shot, a Scola drive, blocked. The Jazz easily pushed the lead back to as much as 19. As unlikely as building a comeback entirely on free throws had seemed, it had no chance if the Rockets were unable to stop the Jazz at the other end. Utah scored its way into the fourth quarter, but with a few minutes of defense, the Rockets climbed back to within a chance. They moved to within 86-74 with the ball, then did not score at all for the next four minutes, missing five-consecutive jumpers, three from beyond the arc. The Jazz did not shoot much better, allowing the Rockets to hang around. But they never seemed to have much of a chance, having spent so much of the night on the brink of a blowout. The Rockets had withstood their terrible offensive start, when they made 1 of 7 shots with every starting missing at least one attempt in the first three minutes. They withstood the start to the second quarter, when they went with their young bench and were outscored, 15-7, in four minutes, with Paul Milsap in particular having his way with the Rockets young reserves. They Jazz were getting good shots from the opening tip, while the Rockets got little going offensively other than McGrady’s 10-point first quarter and a few 3s they drained around him. Still, they were within four points midway through the second quarter. Then their offense broke down nearly as completely as it had the night before in Denver. The defense soon followed. A day after they were down 17 at halftime, they went to the locker room 15 points off the Jazz pace. But this collapse was even more sudden. In the last six minutes of the half, McGrady missed two free throws, two 3-pointers and a layup. Luis Scola missed a layup. One possession ended when Bobby Jackson had to chase a loose ball into the backcourt and throw up a 60-footer to beat the shot clock buzzer. Another ended with Deron Williams stripping the ball from Jackson. The Rockets’ only field goal of the last six minutes of the half came when Carl Landry picked up a loose b all to hit a foul-line jumper. The Rockets were outscored 14-3 on their way to the locker room, seeming as in disarray as they were in Denver. In Utah, for much of the night, they were simply overmatched, which with the playoffs just days away, might have been worse, or at least more foreboding.
