  7. Randolph kept job with Mets after meeting with team brass His controversial comments got him in trouble, but Willie Randolph must have said the right thing to keep his job on Monday. Marathon meetings with New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya, principal owner Fred Wilpon and COO Jeff Wilpon resulted in Randolph keeping his managerial job. The meeting had been called after Randolph made comments last week that were critical of coverage on the team's flagship television station SNY. He also wondered whether negative analysis of his managing in a column in The Bergen (N.J.) Record was racially motivated. He is the first black manager in New York. Later, Randolph apologized for his reactions. "I don't think it's about race," he said of the column. "It's about winning ballgames and getting back to the way we are capable of playing." The comments likely weren't the only motivation for Randolph's meeting with management. The Mets are 1-6 in their last seven games, 23-25 overall and in fourth place in the National League East heading into a series with the surprising first-place Florida Marlins. Mike Pelfrey goes for the Mets against Ricky Nolasco on Monday in the first game of three in New York.
