  4. Breaking News: No Hockey This Year at Ford Arena Scott Lawrence May 28, 2008 - 1:43PM KFDM News has learned there won't be a hockey team playing at Ford Arena this year, but SMG General Manager John Hughes says the owner of the Austin Ice Bats is still intent on finding a local investor and fielding a team in Beaumont for the 2009 season. In March, the owner of the Texas Wildcatters announced he was moving the team to Ontario, California. The owner of the Austin Ice Bats, Randy Sanders, wants to move his team, and he visited with SMG officials several weeks ago and said he was trying to find a local investor to help him find a home in Beaumont for his hockey team. But SMG General Manager John Hughes says it won't happen this year. "We're not going to have hockey in Ford Arena this year," Hughes told KFDM News in a telephone conversation Wednesday afternoon. "I spoke with Randy Sanders late Wednesday morning, and he told me the Ice Bats will sit out the season. It wasn't a matter of terms. It's just he was unsuccessful in the time frame he had, which was a month, in finding a local investor." Hughes says he'll talk with Sanders in the near future. "He expects to be back in Beaumont in the next few weeks to look for a local investor so he might do something here in the 2009 hockey season." Despite the loss of hockey, Hughes says Ford Arena is in good shape for the coming weeks and months. "We have a lot of activities going on at Ford Arena and Ford Park, " said Hughes. "We wanted to have hockey, but it wasn't just about filling event days - we don't want to lose money. We won't have the utility costs and other costs associated with hockey. We have other things in the pipeline. We still have events filling a majority of those days."

  9. Mustangs open regional final series Thursday By Joshua Buckley The Daily News Published May 27, 2008 FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Mustangs will play for the Class 4A Region III baseball title at the University of Houston this week. The Mustangs, in the regional finals for only the second time in school history, will take on Lamar Consolidated in a best-of-three series beginning Thursday at Cougar Baseball Field on the UH campus. “We know they are a good team,†said Friendswood coach Charlie Taylor. “But Bay City beat them, and we’ve played Bay City already in the playoffs. We know they are beatable, so we’ll go toe-to-toe and hope something good comes out.†Game 1 is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, with Game 2 set for Friday at 7:30 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 will be 2 p.m. Saturday. Champions of District 24-4A, Lamar Consolidated has been put to the test in their last two playoffs series. The Mustangs eliminated Port Neches-Groves in three games in the quarterfinals and needed three games again to take out Brenham. Brenham was one of the favorites to win Region III. Friendswood (25-8 record) is currently riding a 15-game winning streak, including six straight postseason contests. They swept Austin McCallum in the regional semifinals over the weekend. In their last two playoff series, the Mustangs have started Stefan Myers at pitcher in Game 1 and Andrew Beasley in Game 2. Both have been spectacular, limiting some of the best offenses in the region. Taylor said he expects the Mustangs to be another strong offensive team, especially after scoring 26 runs in the regional semis. He also said he hasn’t determined which one of the two aces will start Game 1. “Either one of those guys is great,†Taylor said. “We’re going to find out what (Lamar’s) hitting is like and what we want to go after them with in the first game. We’ll play it by ear and make a decision some time this week.†Despite being on a hot streak during the last two months, Taylor said Lamar Consolidated will likely be the favorites to win the series. “We are going in as the underdog,†Taylor said, “and we like it that way.â€
  10. Barbers Hill runner signs letter with Lamar By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published May 28, 2008 Jess Williams achieved a personal milestone Tuesday morning when he signed a letter of intent to run track and cross-country for Lamar University. The Barbers Hill senior finished seventh in the 800-meter run at the Class 4A state track and field meet after a second-place finish in the Region III meet. He also was the District 21-4A cross-country champion. “This is pretty special,†Williams said of signing with the Beaumont school. “I always thought I would have to walk on, so this is a big accomplishment for me. I wanted to stay closer to home and I had a gut feeling about Lamar. This is where I could go and excel.†Williams will join former teammates Aaron and Austin Malek, as well as Greg Williams of Crosby, on the team. He will join a team that placed ninth in the recent Southland Conference outdoor meet. He will join a team that placed ninth in the recent Southland Conference outdoor meet. “He is going to be fine at the college level,†Barbers Hill coach Dwayne Nunez said. “He has really worked hard to get to this point.†Williams is preparing for his collegiate career by competing with Track Houston, a USA Track and Field team. He competed in his first meet for the team this past weekend and finished fourth in the 800-meter run and was a member of the first place 4x800-meter relay. He competed in the 800-meter run for the first time this year and looks forward to improving in the event at Lamar. “At first I was disappointed with how I finished at state, but the race was not something that I was used to,†Williams said. “I knew it was over for me in the last lap. I think that I can adjust to it, I have never been in that situation before, so it was a learning experience.†While at Lamar, Williams intends to pursue a degree in education by majoring in history and working toward a minor in kinesiology. He will begin next year by competing for the cross-country team, getting in shape for the track season. “I’m excited that I get the opportunity to run cross-country, but I am more excited about track,†Williams said. “Cross-country will be about preparation for me. “I am going to have to eat healthier and train harder, but I am still going to have fun. I’m not going to look at this like it is a job, but more as a hobby.â€

  13. Lamar's grid return pleases SLC boss By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News HUNTSVILLE — Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett said he was delighted to see Lamar University reinstating football after a 20-year absence. Burnett remembered Lamar football from his collegiate days at Louisiana Tech. The league's commissioner in the north Dallas suburb of Frisco, Burnett was elated when he talked about Lamar's intent to revive football. "I certainly remember Lamar football from back in the 1980s and, of course, it's fantastic for your area," Burnett said last Saturday prior to the Southland Conference post-season baseball tournament's championship game between Lamar and Sam Houston State. "Football is the sport that drives and solidifies a conference's membership. It's the sport that defines who we are as a conference. We at the Southland Conference are as excited as anybody about Lamar football's return." Prior to coach Ray Woodard's new appointment as LU head football coach, Burnett indicated that he had no previous background of any significance with Woodard, the Navarro College mentor who was named to run the Lamar program last Monday. "I do not have much familiarity with coach Woodard but knowing (LU-Beaumont president Dr. Jimmy) Doctor Simmons' desire to bring back football at Lamar, I'm not surprised by how this has developed. It had to be on their timetable. "Yet, when you really think about this part of Southeast Texas and its strong ties to football, to have a university in this part of the country to not have football is a rarity." Burnett was named conference commissioner on Dec. 23, 2002. The Southland Conference's football membership has increased from six to eight schools over the past five seasons under Burnett's leadership. Southeastern Louisiana and Central Arkansas have been added to the 2003 roster of Texas State, Northwestern State, McNeese State, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin State and Nicholls State. Central Arkansas will play a SLC football schedule in 2008 but will be ineligible for post-season playoff competition. Burnett's concerns are that the Southeast Texas area financially supports Lamar's efforts for football. The commissioner admitted another area of concern involved Texas State's future in the league. Southland Conference football ranks among the best Division I FCS leagues (1-AA) in the nation, and enjoys an annual expectation of competing for the national championship with multiple teams often advancing to the NCAA playoffs. But the Southland is not among the schools in the FBS -- the Football Bowl Subdivision. Rumors have circulated within the SLC that Texas State is interested in a future jump. "We hear the rumors that Texas State might move to another conference (such as Conference USA)," Burnett said. "Really, when you look back on it, we lost Louisiana-Monroe (2006)... In this day and age, you have to have another conference "to go to" and we have withstood a lot of changes over the years. The league remains a strong, viable organization."

  15. Riojas new WO-S baseball coach Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Two wins against an inferior opponent a season will not cut it with the new man in town for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs baseball team. The Mustangs baseball team found its man recently and it is Jesse Riojas. Riojas and Jimmy Holloman shared the duties this past season after Derrick Rivers was dismissed from his duties. Now Riojas is determined to put the Mustangs back on their winning ways and become a contender in District 21-3A next season and beyond. “It feels great, it really does,†Riojas said. “It is truly an honor for me. West Orange-Stark was always rich in tradition in the past and were competitive over the years when I played baseball. I already have a ton of support from the parents, the kids and my colleagues. Cornell Thompson and Dan Hooks here at WO-S also support baseball and they are this team’s No. 1 fans.†Riojas is a 2000 graduate of Little Cypress-Mauriceville where he played under LC-M’s Steve Griffith. Riojas will turn eyes his on making sure his players are ready to turn their sights on improving the Mustangs baseball team and in a hurry. “I am confident we can turn this thing around,†Riojas said. “We are all going to work hard and keep getting better. These players really have not been in an offseason in quite a while. Now the kids will be prepared, hit the weights in the summer and hit the track. Plus several are playing some select ball and also in the Babe Ruth system. “I just want to bring that swagger we had at LC-M over and back to WO-S. Here lately when someone played WO-S they might have said, ‘Here we go. I can pad my stats up a bit.’ In the future I want them to say, ‘ We better strap up because the Mustangs come ready to play.’†Riojas is also not short on mentors he can turn to for help. He was coached by Griff and has worked closely with Sam Moore and Chris Fackler. “I worked for two-and-a-half years with Sam and Fackler and those two are big mentors for me,†Riojas said. “I still talk with those guys on a daily basis. Then if I have any questions I can call Coach Griffith. He was just telling how it is when nine parents like you and another set of four or five will not because their child is not out there. We have to do what is best for our teams. I have been blessed with the guys I have been around.†Another part of the baseball tradition which has been lacking for two seasons has been the annual Certa-Bearden Baseball Tournament held at WO-S. “That tournament will be back next season,†Riojas said. “We owe it to those families to have that tournament and it is out of respect to them we will bring it back. We already have four teams lined up to participate and I am wanting to get about eight involved. “I take this game to heart. I love seeing the kids work hard and then find success. I promise to be a Mustang for a long time and not bail in three years. I have a great boss in Coach Hooks, great fans, great players and a great administration. All around this was a perfect place for me.â€
