McGinty brings heat to Bayou Bowl By Dave Rogers Published June 2, 2008 When North Shore’s football team moves in alongside Sterling and Lee in the new District 21-5A lineup next fall, the Mustangs will bring a 70-game district win streak with them. Jeremiah McGinty, the Houston Chronicle’s Greater Houston offensive player of the year, knows a little something about that streak. But just a little. McGinty, who combined for 39 touchdowns running and passing and led the Mustangs to a 14-1 overall record last year, was only the North Shore starting quarterback for a year. “It was pretty hard,†he said of the wait, “but I knew that my chance was going to come. I just hung in there, worked out hard and did what I had to do when it was my time.†There should be no waiting this week when McGinty checks in for the Bayou Bowl. The sixth annual high school all-star game between Texas and Louisiana kicks off Saturday at 8 p.m. at Stallworth Stadium. McGinty and the other all-stars check into town Tuesday to begin two- and three-a-day practices to prepare for the game. This will be the second postseason bowl game for McGinty, who will play this fall at Kilgore College. He threw the winning touchdown pass in a 14-13 victory for his team in the Space City Classic earlier this year. “It was a good experience,†he said of the first-time event held at the University of Houston’s Robertson Stadium. But he’s really looking forward to the Bayou Bowl. “It’s going to be a nice experience,†he said. “I know we have a lot of events during the week and that people that have played in it are now in the NFL. “Now we’ve got the chance to do some of the things they got to do.†One thing McGinty isn’t afraid to do is compete. He and Rockwall’s Braden Smith are the two quarterbacks on the Texas All-Star roster this week. “It’s all about competition,†said the North Shore ex. “You always have somebody waiting to take your spot. You just have to work hard, practice well and try to come out and do the same in the game.â€

Sterling’s Alexander signs with Lamar By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published June 2, 2008 In her heart, Sterling’s Ashley Alexander always knew that she would attend Lamar University. The fact that the Lady Cardinal track team offered her a scholarship was merely icing on the cake. Alexander, who qualified for the Region III-5A meet in three events, accepted a scholarship to Lamar’s Beaumont campus, where she will compete in the long jump and the triple jump. “I was going to go to Lamar anyway, but this will help my parents and I will get to keep running which is a big plus,†Alexander said. “I thought about attending other schools but when I got to the Lamar campus, I didn’t want to go anywhere else. The classrooms are small and it will be easier to get to all of my classes.†Alexander won the High Point Award for the Lady Rangers this season and placed third in the District 21-5A meet in the long jump, triple jump and the 4x400 meter relay. According to Sterling head coach Christie Speights, the best is yet to come. “I think Ashley really hasn’t reached her potential yet which is a good thing,†Speights said. “In college, they fine tune you. I feel really confident about her. She knows what she wants and she is really headstrong.†Alexander will join a Lady Cardinal team that tied for sixth in the 2008 Southland Conference Track and Field meet won by Sam Houston State. Alexander is looking forward to making her mark at Lamar and helping the team move into the championship hunt, knowing that it will take a lot of work. “I want to do really good and I want to get a lot better by the time that I graduate,†Alexander said. “I am going to have to work extra hard and be dedicated to track. “I won’t cheat myself. It will take a lot of adjustments and the pressure will be on me. There is a scholarship riding on this.†While at Lamar, Alexander will pursue a degree in nursing, citing a love of helping people. “I want to get my masters and become a nurse practitioner,†Alexander said. “I love the medical profession and I love taking care of people.â€

UH takes down A&M 4-3 to stay alive in regional COLLEGE STATION – The Houston Cougars needed 11 innings to deliver the knockout punch to Illinois-Chicago on Sunday afternoon. Fittingly, they went down to the wire in the nightcap against Texas A&M. Jake Stewart hit a RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to send the No. 3 seed Cougars to a 4-3 victory over the top-seeded Aggies, setting up a winner-take-all game Monday in the College Station Regional. The Cougars (42-23) will play the Aggies (45-17) at 6:30 p.m. at Olsen Field. The winner will play at Rice, which beat Texas 7-4 in the Houston Regional, in next weekend’s best-of-three super regional at Reckling Park. UH beat UIC 14-11 in 11 innings in Sunday's first elimination game. In the ninth, Caleb Ramsey drew a one-out walk off Travis Starling and advanced to second on a single by Blake Kelso. Stewart ripped the first pitch from Starling up the middle for the game-winner. UH freshman righthander Jared Ray, who picked up the save in Sunday’s early game, tossed his first career complete game. He allowed only five hits.

Former Wildcatters Coach Takes over Everblades ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades president and general manager Craig Brush proudly announced today Malcolm Cameron has been named as the new head coach of the club. Cameron, who spent the previous two seasons in the ECHL as the head coach of the Texas Wildcatters, was at Germain Arena today for the announcement. "The Everblades are one of the top organizations in all of hockey and I'm very honored to be here today." Cameron said. "This is an outstanding opportunity for me and my family to come here and coach and I really look forward to a new era here with the Everblades and working hard to get that Kelly Cup banner hanging in the rafters." Cameron, who will turn 39 in August, becomes just the third head coach in the 11-year history of the Florida Everblades. The Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia native comes to the Everblades organization after leading the Wildcatters to a 52-9-11 record in 2007-08. The Wildcatters ceased operations following the season and have relocated to California where they will begin play in October as the Ontario Reign. The 115 points gathered by Cameron's Wildcatters was tied for the most by a team last year, matching the Cincinnati Cyclones. Overall Cameron brings a resume that includes six seasons as a head coach in the ECHL, United Hockey League & Central Hockey League, during which he has compiled a 237-137-49 regular season record, and also includes serving as an All-Star coach in the 2007 & 2008 ECHL All-Star Games and the 2004 UHL All-Star Game. "Malcolm has a proven track record as a head coach." Brush added. "He knows what it takes to be a successful coach in the ECHL and he is the best recruiter in the league. He has a great work ethic and he instills that work ethic in his teams. These qualities make him the perfect fit for the Florida Everblades." Kyle Busch keeps on rolling with Dover win DOVER, Del. — Kyle Busch revels in his role as NASCAR's villain. He enjoys his role as the top driver so much more. Busch was simply sensational again, dominating the second half of the 400-mile race Sunday at Dover International Speedway and racing to his Sprint Cup series-best fourth win of the season. Busch made it 10 victories total this season, including two in the Craftsman Truck Series and four in the Nationwide Series. He won for the third time in the last five Cup races. "It was definitely a great race for us there," Busch said. "We didn't have the car to beat today." And when the Joe Gibbs Racing driver doesn't find himself in Victory Lane at the end of a Cup race, he's pretty close: Busch earned his fifth straight top-three finish and hasn't finished outside of the top 10 in any of the last seven races. Team owner Joe Gibbs was in the middle of the celebration on pit road while Busch took a bow from his No. 18 Toyota and saluted his crew. He's the points leader after a race where the standings underwent a shake up because an early race wreck took out several contenders. Busch heard the familiar boos during pre-race introductions which have cemented his status as NASCAR's least-popular driver. He has some fun in the role and seems to have accepted the fact he's NASCAR's latest "Bad Boy." "I want to thank all the fans even if they're not Kyle Busch fans," he said. Roush Fenway Racing teammates Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle were second and third in the Best Buy 400. Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon rounded out the top five. "No good," said Edwards, who won the race here in September. "Not what we came here to do. Busch, Biffle and Edwards were lucky to be out front early and miss the 10-car wreck on the 18th lap that took out five of the top-eight Chase drivers. Elliott Sadler was turned into the wall and his No. 19 Dodge was smashed into by Tony Stewart's No. 20 car, triggering a massive pile up that put several cars in the garage and ended all hope of contention. Danny Hamlin was knocked out of the race, and Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Clint Bowyer all returned later with their cars either missing a hood, a fender or running 100-plus laps behind. But they didn't want to quit and give up a shot at earning needed points, even if all the best the drivers could do was run slow and try and stay out of the way of the leaders. Kasey Kahne also had his car damaged in the accident and finished 31st after winning last week. Hamlin suffered the most in the standings, dropping from fourth to ninth. Bowyer, Harvick and Stewart all fell three spots. Biffle rocketed from 11th — one spot away from the Chase cutoff — to fifth in the standings. Stewart took the blame for running too close to Sadler. Stewart lost his chance at victory last week at Charlotte after the No. 20 Toyota got a flat tire with three laps left. "Unfortunately, adversity is our motto here at Joe Gibbs Racing," Stewart said. Well, unless you're on Kyle Busch's team. Biffle, the pole sitter, led 99 of the first 100 laps and was cruising on the concrete until his car had some issues quickly dropped him off the pace. Busch didn't take the lead for the first time until the 150th lap on the 1-mile concrete track. He would lead 158 laps. "In the end, he got his car right and was able to drive off," Biffle said.

Texas stays alive with 4-3 win over St. John's It sounded like false bravado when Texas right fielder Kyle Russell proclaimed that the Longhorns were in an enviable position following their setback to St. John’s on Friday. Two days later the Horns are alive and kicking, thanks in no small measure to Russell. After smacking a pair of home runs Saturday against Sam Houston State, Russell blasted a two-run dinger against the Red Storm to lift UT to a 4-3 win in the Houston Regional at Reckling Park. The No. 2 seed Horns (39-21) will face top-seeded Rice (44-13) tonight. With the Horns leading 2-1 in the seventh inning, Russell cranked a two-out, two-strike pitch off the scoreboard in right field, victimizing Red Storm reliever Jared Yecker with his 18th homer this season. Russell also claimed sole possession of first place in the Texas record book with his 56th career homer, bypassing Jeff Ontiveros (1999-2002). The Horns erased a 1-0 deficit with their two-run sixth inning off St. John’s starter Matt Tosoni (6-2). Brandon Belt tied the game with his RBI double to right, scoring Russell, before David Hernandez tacked on a run-scoring single to left that scored Preston Clark. UT lefthander Austin Wood (7-3) took a three-run lead into the ninth, and quickly retired the first two batters before surrendering consecutive singles, a hit batsman, and a two-run double to Carlos Del Rosario. Righthander Chance Ruffin, the starter against the Bearkats on Saturday, induced a ground ball from Gino Matias to record his third save on the year.

Brewers punish Astros 10-1 to sweep series MILWAUKEE — It was still the fourth inning when Cecil Cooper felt compelled to call on his third of five pitchers Sunday afternoon at Miller Park. By then, it was pretty clear the Astros would extend their season-high losing streak to five games and suffer their first sweep of the year. The Milwaukee Brewers batted around the order during a four-run rally in the first against Shawn Chacon. Then they were even more productive while sending 12 batters to the plate during a six-run rally in the fourth against Jack Cassel and Wesley Wright. The Astros never recovered from the first inning, much less the fourth, while the Brewers completed the three-game sweep with a 10–1 victory before a sellout crowd of 44,613. The offense wasn’t much better against Dave Bush (2-5), who claimed his second victory of the season after holding the Astros to one run on four hits with five strikeouts. If Milwaukee manager Ned Yost had not already started most of his bench players anyway, he might have cleared his bench after the fourth inning against the floundering Astros. The Astros, who have scored only six runs on their losing streak, are now 1-5 on their trip through St. Louis, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. Chacon (2-1) was pulled after giving up four runs on two hits and two walks with two hit batters and two strikeouts over one inning. Cassel gave up six hits and six runs (four earned) with one walk and three strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings. The Astros will take Monday off before starting a three-game series against the Pirates at PNC Park on Tuesday night. After striking out the first two Brewers, Chacon nicked Ryan Braun with a pitch. Chacon almost picked off Braun at first, but first base umpire Fieldin Culbreth ruled that Braun got back in time on the close play. Even worse, Chacon bounced his next pickoff attempt by Lance Berkman for an error. Prince Fielder followed with a walk. Then Corey Hart hit a grounder to short, where Miguel Tejada fielded the ball cleanly and made a solid throw to first. Hart hustled down the line and got Culbreth to rule him safe. Berkman took the throw, put his head down and started running off the field thinking the inning was over. At that same time, Braun was sprinting home to tie the score at 1. Replays showed that Culbreth erred on his call, but the Astros had little recourse even though Berkman and manager Cecil Cooper argued. Chacon walked Russell Branyan to load the bases. The Brewers took a 2-1 lead when Chacon’s 1-2 pitch tailed in and hit Mike Rivera. Craig Counsell added a two-run single to right field to give Milwaukee a 4-1 lead. The Brewers jumped on Cassel in the fourth. Joe Dillon drew a leadoff walk, and Gabe Kapler followed with an RBI triple to center. Braun added a two-run homer to right. Cassel’s troubles continued when he failed to catch Berkman’s toss while covering first base on Fielder’s grounder to the right side. Fielder reached on the error. One out later, Branyan hit a two-run home run to left field. Cassel was finally pulled after Rivera singled to left. Counsell greeted Wright with a single to center. After Bush struck out, Wright walked Dillon to load the bases and then walked Kapler to give the Brewers a 10-1 lead.
