  2. Bridge City welcomes home Smalley Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Even while working on the Orangefield Bobcats staff last season Josh Smalley found it difficult to see what the Bridge City Cardinals were going through in 2007. The Cardinals suffered an 0-10 season and a 60-35 defeat to the hands of Smalley’s then Bobcats’ squad. Smalley is now officially back with his alma mater Bridge City as the offensive coordinator and is expecting to put Bridge City where he thinks they belong — the playoff hunt. “Coming back to Bridge City and leaving Orangefield was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make,†Smalley said. “I really enjoyed my two years with Orangefield. I have tremendous respect for that community and the kids there. I guess it is like they say ‘There’s no place like home.’†Smalley is a 1994 graduate of Bridge City and has served two stints as a coach with the Cardinals. From 1999 to 2001 Smalley coached freshman football and was assistant baseball coach. Smalley returned to Bridge City from 200-3-06 and was moved to varsity football along with an assistant spot in softball. Bridge City Athletics Director Cris Stump said when he told the Cardinals’ players Smalley was headed back to Cardinal Country something happened he did not expect. “It was a spontaneous excitment,†Stump said. “That really sums it up. They remember him from when he was here before. Anytime you get a guy who works that well with kids, it can only help your program. I was not expecting that great of a response although I did know they would be happy.†Stump will also be looking for Smalley to learn his spread offense which was implemented for the first time at Bridge City in Stump’s first season in 2007. “It is totally different than what I did in Orangefield,†Smalley said. “It is exciting to learn something new. It really is a spread offense to run the ball and throw it around a little bit. We have some good kids coming back and it is going to be a challenge. “I have always said in this profession once you care about the kids you never stop caring. To seem them go 0-10 and know they were struggling, it was tough. I only pulled against those guys in one game last year and wanted them to be successful for the rest of the games.†Smalley is now looking to make sure the Cardinals are setting their eyes on a bigger prize than just trying to seek revenge from last year’s Bayou Bowl. “It is not just about one game,†Smalley added. “We have nine other games to worry about. I am interesting in beating Orangefield, West Orange-Stark, Hardin-Jefferson, Hamshire-Fannett and Silsbee. We can’t put everything into one game even though it is a big rivalry.†Stump said he feels real fortunate to have Smalley back on the Cardinals’ staff. “Josh just has a way of building relationships with kids,†Stump said. “It is really why we are in this profession. On the athletic side of things, he is really going to help us a lot on offense. I know he is someone I will be able to count on during Friday nights.†For now Smalley is just happy to be back home. “It feels real good,†Smalley added. “We are going to try to turn this ship around. We have a lot of kids coming back from last year who gained a lot of experience. Bridge City was under a new system last year and it takes a bit to get going. I really think we will be better on both offense and defense. You go into each season expecting to make the playoffs and we expect to be in that hunt. There is no reason we cannot do that.â€

  6. LU Football Coach Announces First Two Assistants Comments 0 | Recommend 0 June 16, 2008 - 6:17PM BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar head football coach Ray Woodard has announced the hiring of Will Richard and Craig McGallion as the first two assistant coaches to join his staff. "I'm excited about having both of these coaches join our staff," Woodard said. Richard is slated to be an offensive coach while McGallion will be on the defensive side of the ball. Richard spent the 2007 season as the offensive line coach under Woodard at Navarro College. The Bulldogs ranked third nationally in total offense (444.6 ypg), fourth in rushing offense (250.5 ypg) and 16th in passing offense (194.2 ypg), while scoring a school-record 428 points (35.7 ppg) in 2007. Offensive lineman JaMarcus Webb was named first team all-America by the NJCAA and running back Tyrone Ross ranked 13th in the nation in rushing with 1,079 yards and eighth in touchdowns with 12. All five of his staring offensive linemen signed Division I - FBS scholarships during the February signing period. "Will has coached with me at Navarro College and I look forward to continuing our relationship at Lamar University," Woodard said. In 2006 Richard was the assistant head coach and offensive line coach at South Lenoir High School in Deep Run, N.C. following a year at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. While at Blinn, the Buccaneers ranked 24th in the nation in total offense with 344.8 ypg. He also has made stops at the University of Central Oklahoma, Tarleton State University and Trinity Valley College. At TSU he was a student coach under current Sam Houston State head coach Todd Whitten. He enlisted in the Marines from 1992-96 and served tours of duty in Okinawa, Japan and Cherry Point, N.C. before going into private business for two years. Richard earned his bachelor's degree from Tarleton State in 2003 and his master's from Central Oklahoma in 2005. McGallion comes to Lamar after serving as the defensive coordinator at Silsbee HS under his brother Bobby McGallion, where the Tigers made the playoffs six out of the last ten seasons. In the last few years McGallion coached former standouts William Morrisey and Ahmad Jones, a pair of first-team all-state defensive linemen who signed with Texas A&M and Oklahoma State, respectively. "I have know Craig for my entire coaching career and he comes from a great coaching family," Woodard said. "He will bring his strong abilities as a coach and recruiter to our program." McGallion spent three seasons as the head coach at Barbers Hill from 1995-98 following a two year stint at Woodville from 1993-94. He led Woodville to the playoffs in his first season with a 6-4-1 mark. From 1989-93 he spent time in the Cy-Fair Independent School District at both Cy-Fair HS and Cy-Creek HS. He mentored future NFL Pro Bowl selection Sam Adams, who played at Texas A&M, along with Shane Rink, who lettered at Texas, while at Cy-Creek. McGallion was a three-year letterman at nose guard at the University of Houston. He received his bachelor's degree in Education from UH in 1984. McGallion graduated from Silsbee HS in 1979. He was an all-state selection at linebacker who was also a member of the 1977 Tiger team that reached the state semifinals. "Both (coaches) have extensive local ties to the Golden Triangle and will strengthen our commitment to recruiting local talent," Woodard added. Woodard would like to hire at least one more assistant by the end of the summer with the possibility of as many as three more in the fall months.

The 7-foot-6 Houston Rockets center had his NBA season cut short by a fractured foot in February and faced a race to be fit to lead China's challenge for basketball gold at the Aug. 8-24 Beijing Olympics. "Yao Ming will definitely play the match and this will be his first match after returning from injury," the organizer of the Stankovic Cup told Sohu.com. As well as China and Asian champions Iran, the Stankovic Cup will also feature European champions Russia and African champions Angola. It will take place in Hangzhou, China, from July 17-20.
