  3. Fontenot inks with Lamar State-Port Arthur By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published June 19, 2008 A long, arduous recruiting process has come to a close for Sterling graduate Adrian Fontenot. The two-time first-team 21-5A all-district selection has signed a letter of intent with Lamar State College-Port Arthur. The Seahawk basketball team went 13-15 last season and will compete in Region XIV next season. “There were a lot of schools that called, but nobody offered,†Fontenot said. “When Lamar State put it on the table, I went ahead and ran with it. I know the area and I have family there. “Hard work pays off, it is just a blessing from God that I am able to play college basketball. I know it is going to pay off.†Fontenot was a member of the varsity for four years at Sterling and was the runner-up in District 21-5A MVP voting after averaging 17.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. At 6-6, he is projected to see time at small forward and power forward under new head coach Jerre Cole. Cole was an assistant coach at Garden City (Kans.) Community College before taking the Lamar State job. “Coach Cole told him that he was a three/four tweener, but by the time that he leaves he will be a three,†Sterling head coach Mark Patton said. “They have moved from a Division-3 school to a D-1 school overnight. Their facility was a major selling point after playing in our bandbox back there. It was definitely an eye-opening presentation.†Another selling point was Fontenot’s ability to step into a contributing role as a freshman. Last season, the Seahawks were vertically challenged and have made adding height a prerequisite as they prepare for the rigors of Region XIV basketball against the likes of Lee College, San Jacinto College and Paris Junior College. “I knew there was a good chance that I could come in and start as a freshman,†Fontenot said. “So I’m just looking forward to going in there and doing some new things. “They play a lot of big schools; San Jac is one of the top schools in the country. It’s a tough league and I think my recruiting will take off. I have the ability to take it to the next level and I am excited about what lies down the road.†Fontenot plans on pursuing an associate’s degree in business administration with the intention of owning his own business some day. This summer he has been in the gym, lifting weights and working on his conditioning as he prepares for Lamar State’s full-court style of play. “I need to work on my mid-range jumper,†Fontenot said. “It wasn’t that hard in high school. I was able to blow by players and bully players, but it will be more difficult in college.†Patton feels that Fontenot will be able to make the transition to the college game and excel. “He’s a fantastic player, a dominant player,†Patton said. “He stacks up there with the players I have coached at Sterling. “I haven’t really seen the likes of Adrian. I’ve enjoyed having him, he did everything that I asked him to do and he was a leader. I hate to see him go.â€
  4. Car wreck injures BH coach, wife By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published June 18, 2008 Barbers Hill head girls’ basketball coach John Chancellor and his wife Angela remained in Beaumont’s Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital Tuesday after a harrowing weekend car wreck. The Sunday crash, which totaled their car, broke both of Angela’s arms and a leg and left several lacerations on John’s face and legs. “God blessed us,†Chancellor said. “The tow-truck driver said that we were the poster child for seatbelts and airbags. We are just thankful that our kids were with their grandparents.†The Chancellors were traveling home from Baton Rouge to prepare for the Barbers Hill girls’ basketball camp, which began Tuesday. At around 3 or 4 p.m., a truck hydroplaned across the median and hit head on the Toyota Camry in which they were traveling. The Chancellors’ car spun into another car and might have been hit in the back by yet another car. Road conditions at the time were slippery. “It had been raining off and on throughout the day,†Chancellor said. “All I remember is a green truck and then the ambulance. Angela was awake through it all. “Angela has six or seven weeks of hard work ahead of her. She will be able to come home in five or six days, but we will have to find some home health care; she can’t move. “I have three or four good Clint Eastwood scars on my chin but I was ugly to begin with. I think that I will be able to come home tomorrow or the next day.†Chancellor suffered bruising to his stomach and sternum as well and was able to walk for the first time on Tuesday. “The good news is that everything we have wrong can be fixed,†Chancellor said.

  12. [Hidden Content] Diboll looking for a new head football coach Head Coach Gary Martel was named the lone finalist for Diboll schools superintendent after a special school board meeting Monday night. After a required by-law 21 day waiting period, Martel will take over the position. "I'm ecstatic and excited," Martel said of the new job. "This is an area" -- of his career - "I wanted to be in one day. I just didn't think it would happen this fast." Board President Trey Wilkerson said Martel possesses to strengths the board valued highly, good communications skills and familiarity with the district, plus "he's shown leadership in previous positions," Wilkerson said. Martel is more than just a coach, said the board president. "He's served as an administrator. He was a good teacher in this district" before departing for Anahuac for six years. Martel returned to Diboll in 2006. The vote to hire Martel was 5-0 with two abstentions, Wilkerson said. Andrea Swor and Ronnie Coleman felt they had too many potential conflicts of interest to vote. "I came back here because I love it," Martel said of Diboll. He and his wife love being in the community, he said. Jacob Sherman will continue as interim superintendent until the waiting period is over, Wilkerson said. The board had the option of naming Martel as interim but decided keeping Sherman would provide time for Martel to prepare. Martel said looking for a replacement for himself as coach and athletic director will be "one of the first things on the agenda" when he takes over. "I think a number of people who are highly qualified" are interested in the post. He said he probably will open up the position to applicants and evaluate at that point. "We're going to move forward and get some stability," Martel said. "That's what we want." Former Superintendent Brent Hawkins had made curriculum reform a major emphasis. Martel said he was involved in that and believes Diboll now has a great curriculum "and we've got great vehicles for delivering it - our teachers." "What's important right now is to stay the course," he said, with no immediate shake-up but a thorough evaluation of all aspects of the districts. The number one thing, he said, "there's 2,000 people looking for some leadership, 1,800 students and 200 employees." He thanked the school board, calling the seven members dedicated to improving the district. He and the board "want a relationship of trust throughout the district," he said. "I've got a great community," he said. "I know them and they know me." Martel is a graduate of Lamar University, where he played football, and holds a master's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. He is one course away from having his superintendent's certification from the state. Martel has compiled 9-1 regular season records the last two football seasons since returning from Anahuac, tying for the district title in 2006. The Lumberjacks have not gotten out of the first round of the playoffs in his tenure. He is 51-32 in nine years as a head coach. His primary goal, he said, is to make Diboll excellent in academics as well as athletics. "I will work myself ragged to make this the district of choice."
