  1. WOS/BC and Nederland will play Wednesday at 4:45 at BC.
  2. Jost accepts OF Lady ’Cats position Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Chris Jost is more than happy to move 400 miles away from home to start a job in Orange County. Jost recently accepted the Orangefield Lady Bobcats head basketball coach position in replacement of Sondra Ancelot. Jost, 34, will leave being the head coach of Comanche High School and takes over a program in Orangefield already set up nicely for a successful future. “My last few stops I have had to rebuild so it is nice to come in where the program is already established,†Jost said. “I plan on coming in and just putting my stamp on it. I know they lost some key seniors from last year but there is a good group coming back with experience.†So how does a coach 400 miles away become interested in a job in Orangefield? “I saw the job posted on Texashoops.com and saw where Coach Ancelot had gone to Lamar,†Jost said. “I did a little research on the program and saw the facilities they have and the fan support. That is when I became really interested. The kids there expect to win and work hard.†Laura Riddick, a senior at Orangefield, was more than excited about next year and the hire of Jost. “He seemed real nice,†Riddick said. “We were playing at the open gym and he was being shown around. I hope the transition goes real smooth and goes well. We are all looking forward to Coach Jost coming in and we know we are going to have to play real hard to keep up next season.†Jost was 60-39 at Comanche and reached the playoffs in all three seasons there with one trip to the regional semifinals.. He carries a 161-122 overall record and has been to the playoffs the last six years . He also coached at VanVleck and Lytle High Schools. The Lady Bobcats have reached the regional tournament in Huntsville the last two seasons along with District 21-3A rival West Orange-Stark. Orangefield fell to Diboll 65-58 this past season in the regional tournament and posted a 28-8 record. The position became open when Ancelot accepted the position of assistant head coach for the Lamar Lady Cardinals under new head coach Larry Tidwell. Ancelot was 139-35 at Orangefield in five years with the last four marking playoff trips. Orangefield lost a group of seven seniors last year but the cupboard is not empty. The Lady Bobcats will return top scorer Kaylin Little and also bring back Riddick and Olivia Wagner. “I know he did some research on the job and thinks this is one of the top jobs in the state,†Morrison said. “He is the right man for the job. We wanted someone who is going to be dedicated and be successful. We want to take this program to a new direction.†Jost knows even with the returning talent and a nice pool of youngsters to come in does not immediately mean success. “I have noticed that District 21-3A the last several years is one of the toughest in the state,†Jost said. “Our style of play will resemble a lot of what Orangefield is used to in the past. We will also do a lot of full-court press on defense and look to push on offense. We want to dictate the tempo and be able to play at any speed. “I have said that at Comanche we had decent talent but the players played so hard. At Orangefield the talent is better and the girls still play very hard. Orangefield is just a real good job and I am excited about the situation.â€

  8. Earnhardt Jr. to unveil plans at Wednesday press conference By JENNA FRYER AP Auto Racing Writer CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. has decided where he will drive next season, and all signs point to Hendrick Motorsports. NASCAR's most popular driver called a Wednesday news conference at his race shop, JR Motorsports, and spokesman Mike Davis said it was to announce his plans for 2008 and beyond. It's the same site where Junior announced May 10 he would leave DEI and enter the free-agent market. That move ignited a whirlwind of recruiting rarely scene in NASCAR, and there's been nonstop talk regarding where Earnhardt would end up. He's made shop visits and met with various car owners while he trying to make a decision. His sister, Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, is handling his negotiations and has maintained their first choice was to keep Earnhardt in a Chevrolet. She has said the majority of her conversations have been with NASCAR's top Chevy teams. Hendrick is the best in NASCAR right now, with 10 wins through the first 15 points races this season. Speculation grew Monday night that Earnhardt was close to a deal with Hendrick, but officials declined comment Tuesday. Elledge did not respond to messages from The Associated Press. Rick Hendrick currently has four drivers under contract, and told the AP last month "there was no room at the inn" for Earnhardt. NASCAR rules permit a car owner to field four Nextel Cup teams. But multiple sources - speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because Earnhardt's plans have not been announced - said Hendrick officials have been working for nearly three weeks to figure out how to bring the star driver into the fold. One scenario could put Earnhardt into the No. 5 car that Kyle Busch currently drives. Busch is under contract through 2008, and Hendrick has said he wanted to sign the 22-year-old driver to an extension. But there are rumblings Busch has asked to be released from his contract. Asked if that was true, Hendrick spokesman Jesse Essex said, "We don't comment on contractual issues." Busch was testing in Milwaukee on Tuesday and not available to comment. It's still possible Earnhardt could end up at Richard Childress Racing, where his father won six of his seven championships, or Joe Gibbs Racing. But Childress is out of the country, and the assistant to Gibbs president J.D. Gibbs said Gibbs is away all week. © 2007 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. 18. AUSTIN _ The UIL Legislative Council adopted an immediate 30-day calendar suspension with a student's first positive test when statewide random testing begins in September. The Council passed the penalty phase to follow a recently passed Senate Bill 8, which requires testing. The Council will reconsider the penalty structure at its next meeting in October. Concerns were that a 30-day period wasn't a strong enough deterrent. And that a 30-day calendar period could unevenly effect student whose sports weren't in immediate season. The NCAA changed its penalty structure to a calendar year after beginning with a 30-day suspension. A second positive results in a year suspension and a third in a permanent ban from participation. The Texas State Legislature passed the first statewide random testing in May. New Jersey does random testing after championships but UIL officials believe that steroid testing at a specific time would allow students to "beat" a test by clearing it from their system. The UIL will set specifications for what will be a $6 million, two-year contract with a steroid testing provider and the UIL wants part of the bidding process to include fair methods for random tests of more than 20,000 students.
