  1. Barber's Hill was one of the teams.
  2. Demons first game in Orange could be their last Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader The debut game of the Southeast Texas Demons could be the last game the team plays at West Orange-Stark Middle School. Demons’ head coach and co-owner Chip Pierce said West Orange-Stark Athletics Director Dan Hooks informed him Thursday the squad was no longer welcome to play home games at WO-S Middle School. “Liquor bottles were found in the opposing team’s locker room,†Pierce said. “Dan Hooks called and there was no talking. He said it was against state law and pretty much hung up.†WO-C CISD Superintendent Dr. O. Taylor Collins said he will talk to Pierce today to see if the Demons will have another shot at cleaning up the problem. “We were very excited to have them use the field at the middle school,†Collins said. “After the game a custodian said they found beer and alcohol bottles in the dressing rooms, under the stands and on the sidelines. This is the people’s property and we will not allow this to happen. We may give them another shot but they have to show valid insurance and beefed up security. We just can’t allow those things to happen where kids are everyday.†The Demons debuted Saturday against the Lake Charles, La. Riverkats. Pierce said he informed the Southern American Football League commissioner of the liquor bottles. “How are we responsible,†Pierce asked. “We had security here. I can’t pat down everybody. So I called LC-M and they said the name Demons did not fit their Christian community. Orange had a good thing and now we have to move it already.†The coach said he will invite talking to Collins but will still search for another field in case the team is told to no longer use WO-S Middle School. Pierce said his physical trainer worked with doctors in Nederland and they are looking to possibly move into that community. Port Neches-Groves is also a possibility. Another problem Pierce was told about the Demons playing at the middle school was the size of the crowd. “I was told the trash was too much,†Pierce added. “We have to get a field locked down soon to have a week to prepare for our game in two weeks. It is a blow, especially on such short notice. They could have called on Monday. I can’t control everybody that comes here. We are going to at least try to continue to practice here in Orange.†Collins said as much as he loves football and the possibility of the Demons becoming a mainstay in Orange, his first obligation is to the kids who patrol the grounds. “I don’t want that on the field,†Collins added. “It is as simple as that. You cannot bring alcohol onto school grounds. I want to help them out but this has to get better. We cannot put the district at risk no matter how much we want them to play here.†Pierce is also still wanting the great support the Orange community gave the Demons in the debut game. Several hundred fans were in attendance at the game. The Demons travel to Houston Saturday to face the Texas Blackout before returning to Southeast Texas to play host to the Lafayette, La. Bayou Bulls.

  9. WO-S cousins Netherly, Thomas in All-Star tilts Van Wade The Orange Leader It’s always a special feeling to land on an All-Star Game roster. For West Orange-Stark next week, it’s a double-whammy. Richard Netherly and Earl Thomas, both 2007 WO-S High School graduates, will participate in their respective All-Star games — Netherly in basketball and Thomas in football. That’s quite a feat for two outstanding former Mustangs and to top it, they are cousins. Netherly will be competing for the South All-Stars in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Basketball Game Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Texas Christian University’s Daniel Meyers Coliseum. Meanwhile, Thomas will line up for the South All-Star football team Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at TCU’s Amon Carter Field. Both were teammates on the varsity basketball team for four seasons. The Mustangs made the postseason the last three years, advancing all the way to the Class 3A State Tournament in 2006 where they fell in the state semifinals. “It’s going to be awesome to represent West Orange-Stark one more time and to know that Earl (Thomas) is playing the next night, that’s an even better feeling,†said Netherly. “That’s a blessing, to have two cousins playing in All-Star games like that. We’ve been rooting each other on for a long time now and we get to do it a little bit longer.†Thomas had the same sentiments. “It’s a tremendous feeling to have two from the same school participating in All-Star games but it’s even better knowing that Richard and I are relatives,†Thomas said. “We back each other all the time. It’ll be one of those moments that you will take with you the rest of your life.†Long-time WO-S Athletic Director Dan Hooks was thrilled for both players. “It’s rare when you have two athletes from the same school participating in such prestigious events but with them being cousins too, that’s just super. You don’t here of that much. Both are tremendous kids that deserve it. Both played key parts in the success of two solid programs.†Netherly, who will play at Navarro Junior College in the fall, was a superb post, averaging over 20 points and 12 rebounds a game the last two seasons while Thomas was a sparkplug at guard, averaging in double figures and directing the offense and defense. Both received prestigious Southeast Texas awards to conclude their tremendous runs in a WO-S uniform. Thomas was selected as the Defensive Award winner at the Willie Ray Smith Awards while Netherly earned the Mr. Inside Award at the James Gamble Awards. Thomas, who will play football at the University of Texas, was awesome at defensive back, wide receiver, running back and as a returner in his three-year stint in a Mustang uniform that saw WO-S win three straight District 21-3A crowns. WO-S went 23-2 the last two seasons including a trip to the 3A State Semifinals in 2005. As a senior, Thomas had his hand in 24 touchdowns. He caught 40 passes for 861 yards and 13 TDs and rushed for 387 yards on 55 carries and scored 9 TDs on the ground. Thomas, who has made great strides already at the University of Texas from his defensive back slot, including picking off a couple passes in front of standout Longhorn receiver Limas Sweed, is looking forward to representing the Mustangs one more time. “WO-S has had several outstanding players in the game in the past and I just want to go out there and represent a school that everyone across the state has so much respect for,†Thomas said. “I don’t know about playing any at receiver but I will be at defensive back and was told that I would be involved in the kickoff and punt returns.†Thomas is anxious about the first official practice at Texas, which rolls around Aug, 6. “They put you through it here, that’s for sure,†Thomas said. “I’ve never worked so hard in my life. In high school, I played so many sports which means I wasn’t in the weightroom all the time. I’m getting stronger and faster and the hard work is paying off already.†Netherly, who is 6-6, 200 pounds, is anxious to strut his prowess at the All-Star event. “I’ve always played post in high school but I’ve really been working hard at handling the ball during the offseason,†Netherly said. “At Navarro, I won’t be inside as much. I’ll be more of a small-foward type. The coaches said they were going to let me handle the ball some. I’m really looking forward to that.†Two other local players will be on Netherly’s South squad including Kountze guard Cameron Powell (6-2, 180), who helped lead the Lions to the Class 2A state title and will , and West Hardin guard Brandon Letsinger (6-3, 170), who has signed to play at Stephen F. Austin University. Joining Thomas on the South All-Star football roster will be former Beaumont Central quarterback Brandon Williams (6-4, 215), who signed with Texas A&M University.

  11. Prosser, 56, dies of apparent heart attack Wake Forest basketball coach Skip Prosser died on Thursday morning of an apparent heart attack shortly after jogging. Prosser was rushed to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Prosser, 56, was one of the most well-liked coaches in the industry and known for his witty and sarcastic sense of humor. He grew up in Pittsburgh and went to high school at Carnegie before attending the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Prosser has spent the past seven seasons at Wake Forest after spending one year at Loyola (Md.) and seven at Xavier. He has a career record of 291-146. Prosser led Wake Forest to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first four seasons and the Demon Deacons won the ACC regular-season in 2003. The Demon Deacons have struggled recently — missing the tournament in each of the past two years. Prosser and his staff were in high spirits recently after learning that two of the nation's top high school players — Al Farouq Aminu and Tony Woods — committed to Wake Forest earlier this month. The staff already had a commitment from another one of the nation's top players, Ty Walker. Obviously, Prosser's peers were stunned to hear the news. "It's so sad. I feel so bad for his wife, Nancy," said Arizona State Herb Sendek, who coached against Prosser when he was with N.C. State. "Skip was a gentleman and someone who represented what was good about our profession. He was the kind of person you wanted your son to play for." advertisement STORY TOOLS: print send blog RSS LIKE THIS STORY? "I was sitting with him yesterday in Orlando," Georgia Tech's Paul Hewitt said. "He was just a great person. It's so sad." "He's a great guy and I watched his career blossom," added Arizona coach Lute Olson. "This is beyond belief. It's awful. He was always very positive and friendly. Extremely outgoing. The kind of guy you always looked forward to seeing." Prosser is survived by his wife, Nancy, and two sons, Scott (28) and Mark (27).
  12. Piazza to press charges against fan who threw bottle ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Mike Piazza said he will press charges against a fan who allegedly threw a half-full water bottle at him during Wednesday afternoon's Oakland Athletics-Los Angeles Angels game, hitting the A's designated hitter in the back of the head. "I'm pressing charges,'' Piazza told reporters. "He's going to spend the night in jail. He hit me right in the helmet. ... It's just inexcusable at a baseball game to throw a bottle at someone. Just a joke." The incident happened as the Athletics were staging a three-run rally in the top of the ninth inning. Piazza was standing in the on-deck circle when he was hit from behind. The game was interrupted as Piazza used his bat to point out the fan he thought was responsible. "It startled the heck out of me, a thump to the back of my head,'' he told reporters. "I turned around and was like, 'Was it you? Or you or you?' Everyone pointed at the guy and I said, 'You're gutless,' and he started walking out. There he goes, the bravest guy in the world. That's a complete lower level of stupidity." The suspect, identified as Ronald Flores, 22, of La Puente, was detained and later booked by Anaheim police on assault and battery charges. After the incident, Piazza, who went 3-for-5 with a home run, hit a single as the A's tied the game 6-6 in the top of the ninth. The Angels responded with a run in the bottom of the ninth to win.
