Student suspended, banned from extracurricular activities after prank HILLIARD, Ohio -- A high school student who tricked football fans from a crosstown rival into holding up signs that together spelled out, "We Suck," was suspended and banned temporarily from extracurricular activities for the prank, according to the school's principal. Kyle Garchar, a senior at Hilliard Davidson High School in suburban Columbus, said he spent about 20 hours over three days plotting the trick, which was captured on video and posted on the video-sharing Web site YouTube. He said he was inspired by a similar prank pulled by Yale students in 2004, when Harvard fans were duped into holding up cards with the same message. Davidson Principal John Bandow had told students that he expected them to show sportsmanship at the game, which Darby won 21-10. Bandow gave Garchar and two students who helped him three days of in-school suspension and banned them from extracurricular activities for a semester, the students said. Two Darby students who helped Garchar received the same punishment after the principals from both schools spoke by phone. Hilliard schools spokeswoman Michelle Wray said she couldn't confirm the punishment because the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act forbids the release of student disciplinary information. "We weren't expecting it to be such a severe punishment," said Jen Trimmer, 17, one of the students involved. "We just thought it was all in good fun." At the end of the video, Garchar wryly thanks the 800 Hilliard Darby High School supporters who raised the cards at the start of the third quarter during last Friday's football game. "It couldn't have been done without you," reads the closing frame of the video. Garchar, 17, created a grid to plan how the message would be spelled out once fans in three sections held up either a black or white piece of construction paper. Directions left on stadium seats instructed fans to check that the number listed on their papers matched their seat numbers. Darby supporters were told the message would read "Go Darby." "It was tedious," Garchar said. "I didn't really think it was going to work." But it did, and everyone at Davidson has been talking it ever since, said Jordan Moore, a junior. "That was the ultimate in-your-face," he said. "I think it was ingenious." Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press

Pirates hoping to make waves in 22-4A Van Wade The Orange Leader VIDOR — In what looks to be a very rugged District 22-4A, the Vidor Pirates are basically flying under the radar going into the 2007 campaign. Many predictors around the state have the Pirates picked seventh or eighth in the district. That doesn’t bother long-time Vidor head coach Jeff Mathews. “Many are talking about how strong teams like Dayton and Central are, which those teams deserve that,†said Mathews. “I kinda like the situation we’re in along with teams like LC-M, PN-G, Nederland, Lumberton and Ozen. This district is as tough as I’ve seen going into a season. It’s going to be competitive all the way through. I know one thing, we have a great bunch of kids that work extremely hard and they’re fun to coach. I think they’re capable of a lot of good things.†The Pirates have a solid core group back with five starters returning on offense and seven on defense. “We have a tremendous senior group of kids back,†said Mathews. “We were thrilled about spring practice too because we’re also counting on some juniors to stand out on the varsity level and even a few sophomores and we saw a lot of promise in them in the spring and early practices.†The Pirates return 2006 starting quarterback Roman Franklin. Franklin completed 98-of-158 passes for 828 yards and four touchdowns. “Roman Frankiln, the kid is just a pure leader, plain and simple,†Mathews said. “Not a lot gets past him and our guys feed off of him. He’s such a competitor. He started at cornerback as a sophomore and is an athlete you love to have on the field.†Junior Chris Teinert will be a solid backup to Franklin. The backfield will be without the services of four-year letter winner Brad Croak, who graduated with his more than 1,000 all-purpose yards. However, Mathews likes what he sees in what looks to be a heavy-duty backfield. Bo Pillsbury returns to the backfield after zipping for 203 yards and four TDs on 42 carries. Bret Harris will also see plenty of totes after playing at the receiver spot in 2006 and track speedster Derek Worthy and Devan Dart will also see action. “Without a doubt, we’re losing a good one in Croak,†Mathews said. “The good thing, though, is that we have four kids that can do a little bit of it all. We have a couple speed guys, a couple with power and a couple that can catch the ball well. We really like our mix and nobody can really count on just stopping one guy.†The fullback will likely be Theron Reynolds and he will be backed up by Shane Pittman. When Harris isn’t toting the ball, he’ll certainly be receiving it after he hauled in 40 catches for 503 yards and three TDs as a junior. Junior Matt Conn looks to be the other starter and two or three more Pirates could see time in the slot. Senior Kaleb Faul and James Laramore will be at tight end. The Pirate offensive line will be guided by center Wesley Reed, guards Spencer Smith and James Burns. The tackles spots will be shared by Brian Patton, Dillon Portie, and C.J. Perez. “We like the depth of our offensive line,†Mathews said. “Our offense, as a whole, should be exciting this year. We have a lot of solid parts. This is the second year we’ve patterned our offense like Liberty Hill. They’ve had a lot of sucess with it over the years. Last year, the kids were getting the hang of it and this year, it’s sank in pretty well for them.†The defense will certainly be anchored by two-time All-District and four-year starter Chase Ferguson at noseguard. He squats 600 pounds and has bench-pressed 450. Also back is three-year starter Tim Dycus at one tackle and two-year starter Blake Whitaker at the other. Larry Williams and Lake Alvis will provid good depth. “That defensive front is kind of our heart and soul,†Mathews said. “Chase is an amazing player and might be the best defensive lineman in the district. Timmy (Dycus) and Blake (Whitaker) are both pretty darn good too. We love what we have up front.†There is plenty of depth at the linebacker spots and so many players are interchangeable, including Teinert, Fall, Laramore, Scott Cathey, Garrett Robinson, Alton Rogers, Cody Campbell, and Remington Quirante. The secondary will be anchored by cornerbacks Dart and Conn. Pillsbury and Worthy are the frontrunners at the safety positions and Todd Glaze and Jake Travis will provide good depth. “Our defense has some kids on it that have been involved in some big games on Friday nights and that’s a huge plus,†Mathews said. “We’re much further ahead on that side of the ball compared to last year.†The Pirates are in good shape as far as the kicking game goes as Franklin will return to handle both the kicking and punting chores. The Pirates have a solid non-district schedule in front of them, including defending TAPPS big school state champion Houston St. Pius to open the season. Vidor also plays Houston Jones and Livingston. Mathews feels the 22-4A race will be something else. “Dayton is loaded again and are so dangerous with all those kids back on offense,†Mathews said. “Coach (Donald) Stowers has done an amazing job with that Beaumont Central program and he told me he thinks they’ll be even better this year. Ozen, they were 1-9 last year but you can wipe that off because Coach (Ishan) Rison has the Panthers on the right track again. PN-G and Nederland will be young but you know they’ll be darn good. Those five get talked about the most but I can say that LC-M will be right in the mix after Coach (Todd) Moody got them fired up last year and the Bears are capable of a run. Lumberton, that team is full of seniors and is capable of big things We plan on being right their in the mix too. It’s going to be wild each and every week, you can count on that.†Mathews is thrilled with what the Pirates could bring to the table. ‘We have a great bunch of kids,†Mathews said. “They were up here all summer, busting their tails in the weightroom and running hard. The best thing about it was while they were doing it, they always had smiles on their faces and that’s what makes coaches smile too. Their work ethic has been tremendous and that’s all you can ask of them. They’ll go out every Friday night and give everything they have. We know, as a coaching staff, we can always count on that.â€

Expectations on the rise in Bear Country Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Every team in high school football has high hopes at this point in the season. Every team is 0-0 and knows with the right attitude and work habits a berth in the playoffs is not far fetched. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears are a team this year that is very, very excited. A 5-5 team from a year ago, the Bears have plenty of reasons to be excited about 2007 and the possibility of making the playoffs in District 22-4A. Four starters are back on both offense and defense and several of the players are keys to LC-M’s success. Coach Todd Moody, in his third year at LC-M, likes what he has seen with the Bears so far and knows a lot of people are expecting exciting times this year. “I expect our kids to do like they have always done — don’t beat ourselves,†Moody said. “We have a great chance to be in the mix just like all the other teams.†Moody has installed a serious attitude of team chemistry within the Bears in his three years and the players on the team now are his guys. The 47 players on the roster have been around Moody and his system is starting to take affect. “You can see the players really want it,†Moody added. “Down the line you can tell we will be disappointed if we are not in the mix. I really know this will be a fun team to coach and we are going to go on a journey together.†Bear Country hopes the journey ends with a trip to the playoffs, a finishing point LC-M has not seen since the 1997 season when the Bears fell to La Marque regional semifinals, 41-20. Most of the current players on LC-M were barely in elementary school at that time. Moody knows the road will be tough in 22-4A with Dayton and Central projected to lead the pack. Teams like Beaumont Ozen, Port Neches-Groves and Nederland are also expected to fight for the third playoff spot. “I think we have our best chance to compete this year than any before since I arrived,†Moody added. “The kids have really bought into the system and the coaches and kids have all come together.†The Bears averaged 19.4 points a game a season ago and averaged 281.2 yards a contest. One of the main returning starters for the Bears will be senior quarterback President Driver. Driver, who overcame a neck injury last year to play in nine games, threw for 916 yards a season ago with 10 touchdowns. He completed 54.7 percent of his passes on 46-of-84 passing with just six interceptions. “President has become a lot more mature since last season,†Moody said. “He is more confident in our offense and he is also our captain on offense. He is stepping up as our leader.†Senior Logan Tarver will be the backup quarterback. Last year’s running game saw Kendrex Salter, now a senior, become an exciting runner who could spin and turn with the best of them. He cruised for nine touchdowns and 722 yards on 127 carries with a 5.7 yards average. Moody said Salter has worked hard since last year to become more of a complete runner, instead of just always seeking the home run. “He also has become a lot more mature,†Moody added. “Kendrex is blocking a lot more and is learning to run downhill instead of just juking everyone. It will be important for him to pick up first downs.†Senior Chris Guy will join Salter in the backfield. “Chris ran the scout team everyday last year and gave us great looks,†Guy said. “Now he is faster and stronger. I look for both guys to have a great year. I hope it turns into a two-headed monster for us.†At receiver the Bears return one of the more exciting catchers around with senior Phillip Richard. Richard had a monster yards-per-catch average with 26.1 yards a reception. He caught seven passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Joining Richard will be senior James Miller as the main two catchers on the Bears’ roster. “Those are two talented receivers,†Moody said. “Phillip is a playmaker all over the field. We hope to get those two guys involved in the offense a lot this year.†All six-feet, five-inches of Jake Tsuchiya will also be looked upon as a threat and Justin King will also be in the mix. “We are going to look for Jake to get involved a lot,†Moody said. “Tony Gunn, who is injured at the moment, will be our swing guy. He will be there some at tailback and receiver.†Senior Chad Richard will make the move from guard to tight end and give Driver have big target to look for in the middle of the field. “Chad and Stefan Leger will both be at tight end and are hard to stop once they get going,†Moody added. “We are always looking to use the tight end in some fashion.†Five guys over the 200-pound mark will be giving the runners holes to barrel through and giving Driver plenty of time to look for the open man. Gary Hooker leads the way at six-feet, two-inches and 225 pounds. Justin Edwards and Eric Blem each weigh in at 210, Frank Snoody is at 215 and Shayne Seago weighs at 200 pounds. Hooker, Snoddy and Blem are each juniors while Edwards and Seago are seniors. “These guys are young and inexperienced,†Moody said. “The scrimmages helped to get some reps and they are learning to use their hands and facemasks as tools. We are getting better in that spot.†On defense the Bears had a great season in 2006 giving up just 272.9 yards a game and 14 points a contest. One of the main contributors to that defense is back in senior linebacker Joseph Viator. In Moody’s 4-3 defense, Viator along with Darius Bob and Howard Griffith will have the chance to roam around and wreck havoc. Leger and Salter will also be looked at as linebackers. “These guys can go get the football,†Moody said. “Everyone knows about Viator and he is the leader. I can already say we are going to miss him a year from now. He understands the defense and nobody is perfect but he can sure cover the football pretty greatly on defense.†Moody also expects big things on the defensive line which returns All-District selection Jared Winbush. Brandon Thompson, Chad Humphrey, Chad Richard, Kyle Stroman and Edwards will shore up the line. “We are way ahead on our defensive line than in the past,†Moody said. “We are on station and looking much better.†Chuch Mullins, a transfer from Ohio, will also be looked at for the defensive line. Moody’s philosophy in the secondary will be to play in halves and in District 22-4A, the corners and safeties will be put to the test. “They are going to hustle,†Moody said. “We can’t let our opponents score on one play.†Michael Green and Justin McCarver will be the Bears’ corners while Thompson and Phillip Richard will be the safeties. So with all the pieces in place, now the Bears will look to put them all together and hope the puzzle spells the word “playoffs.†“You can put Dayton on top right along with Central,†Moody added. “Ozen is always talented, Nederland has been there for 10 straight years and PN-G has great tradition. That is the team we want to be. No matter the talent level at those schools, they are going to compete. That is what we are trying to have at LC-M. “The ultimate respect for a program is to not look at talent but to respect the whole program. We are absolutely on the right track so far. The talent will come and go but our philosophy will stay the same.â€

kogt Texas head coach Mack Brown said on his talk show that sophomore CB Deon Beasley (left) has been doing a very good job in pass coverage and in run support, and he said he feels good about the Longhorns' chances of fielding two good defensive teams that can help keep everybody fresh. Brown said Beasley, who played some last year as a true freshman, was good on pass coverage last season, but has really improved his tackling this year. He's listed on the depth chart as a second team right CB and punt returner. Earl Thomas is a true freshman at UT and is listed as a third team CB. Recently in an interview with Giddings star and Texas pledge Brock Fitzhenry was asked to name the toughest team he's faced and the best player he's played against. He responded WO-S and Thomas!!!!!!!
