  4. \ Busch Series To Be Renamed NationwideNationwide Insurance will become the new title sponsor of the NASCAR Busch Series in 2008, sources close to the negotiations confirmed Tuesday. An official announcement is expected Wednesday. NASCAR officials said Tuesday that serious negotiations were under way, but nothing was finalized. Nationwide replaces Busch beer and Anheuser-Busch Inc., which has been the league's title sponsor for 26 seasons. NASCAR officials hoped to finalize a deal with a new title sponsor months ago, but couldn't get a company to agree to the reported $30 million a season asking price for NASCAR's No. 2 racing league. Nationwide will pay an estimated $12 million per season for a multiyear deal, slightly more than Anheuser Busch was paying. NASCAR officials considered going a year without a title sponsor before Nationwide joined the negotiations last month. Sprint/Nextel pays $75 million a year as the title sponsor for Nextel Cup, NASCAR's top racing series. The Busch Series is the considered by most observers as the second most popular racing league in the country. The Subway restaurant chain was reportedly the leading candidate to replace Busch before Nationwide became involved. Allstate is the official insurance company of NASCAR, but this new sponsorship deal will likely require Nationwide to take over that role according to The Associated Press. Nationwide recently signed a new four-year agreement as a corporate sponsor for the Speedway Motorsports Inc., which owns six tracks that play host to NASCAR races. But one SMI officials said that deal could change because of the new agreement to sponsor NASCAR's second-tier league. According to AP, Nationwide is expected to reach a similar deal with International Speedway Corp. ISC currently has a contract that lists AAA Insurance as the "Official Auto Club" of its 11 tracks. ISC is the publicly traded sister company of NASCAR, and both are owned by the France family. It's not clear if Nationwide will be required to meet advertising requirements with ESPN, which is in the first year of an eight-year contract to exclusively broadcast the Busch Series. ESPN worked with NASCAR to find a new sponsor for the series, and it was believed that the advertising requirement held up talks with several companies. Terry Blount covers motorsports for ESPN.com. 7. Kountze, Hardin battle for first place in 24-2A volleyball A team's momentum is at an all-time high when they have an undefeated record. But at times, some teams lose sight of their goals after a few easy wins and become comfortable - maybe too comfortable. The Kountze volleyball team can't afford for this to happen - too much is at stake. Kountze and Hardin, which are both undefeated in District 24-2A, play at 6 p.m. today in Kountze to determine who will hold sole possession of first place. "There's a lot at stake so we can't lose focus," said first-year Kountze coach Megan O'Quinn. "We never take anybody too lightly. We take it game by game and point by point." Hardin is 5-0 in district play, while Kountze is 4-0. So far, the Hornets have racked up wins against Deweyville (twice), Buna, East Chambers and Anahuac. Kountze (20-6) beat Anahuac, Deweyville, Buna and East Chambers to remain undefeated. Despite Warren moving to 23-2A, coaches decided not to reschedule games for this season. Each team in the six-team district has three byes among their round-robin schedule. "We want to win the district title," said O'Quinn, who was West Hardin's freshman coach last year. "We know it won't be handed to us, so we have to stay focused. We have to continue to work hard in games and in practice. We must also play good defense if we want to achieve this goal." Kountze missed the Class 2A playoffs last season after a regional quarterfinal appearance in 2005. Hardin, Anahuac and East Chambers represented the district during last year's postseason. Hardin, which won the district title, made it to the regional quarterfinals before Lexington beat the Hornets in four games. Arp beat Anahuac in the second round, and Lexington beat East Chambers in the first. "We hope to make a deep run in the playoffs," O'Quinn said. "But we still have games left to play in district, so we need to win those games first before we really start talking about the playoffs." The Lions return five starters from last year's team - middle blocker Kaila Johnson, outside hitter Maegan Stanford, setter Tachara McGrue, outside hitter Kayla Allen and middle blocker Lauren Deaver. Sophomore Angela Bloodsworth rounds out the starters for the Lions this season. "It's going to be a tough game against Hardin," O'Quinn said. "But we have the players on this team to beat them. We have to play good defense if we want to get the job done."
  8. Going to be a great game!!!
  9. PN-G rallies from down two to beat LC-M, 3-2 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — History is a funny thing. In the Bear Cave Tuesday, the Port Neches-Groves Rock-A-Noos were trying to repeat it and the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears were trying to shake it off. After being up two games to none against LC-M, the Lady Bears let the Rock-A-Noos fight all the way back as PN-G escaped with a 3-2 win in the match. PN-G won the match 22-25, 14-25, 25-19, 25-16 and 15-7. PN-G (18-8, 9-0) got down 5-1 in the final game and then went on a 14-2 run to end the match and win the fifth game 15-7. LC-M falls to 16-13 overall and 6-3 in the District 22-4A standings. LC-M’s Morgan Blohm had 16 kills in the match while Jordyn Davis added seven. PN-G’s Kayla Prasnicki had 11 kills while Paige Miller chimed in nine assists to lead her team in that category. This was not the first time this scenario played out between this two 22-4A heavyweights. In the first round of district LC-M led PN-G 2-0 at The Reservation before the Rock-A-Noos stormed back to win the match 3-2. “We still feel good where we are at in district but they (Lady Bears) still should have won this match,†LC-M Coach Vicki Castino said. After jumping out to the 2-0 lead, nothing could go right for the Lady Bears in the third and fourth games. The Lady Bears had 11 errors in the third game. LC-M had 15 total errors between the first and second games combined. PN-G’s Samantha Lunceford gained a little control for the Rock-A-Noos in the third when she came to serve with PN-G up 10-8. Lunceford struck for four straight service points giving PN-G a 13-8 lead. The two teams flip-flopped scoring except for once up the score was 19-15 when Lunceford came back up to serve. Lunceford struck for three more service points, the last two coming as she set Sami Jo Williams two straight times for kills. PN-G took a 22-15 lead. A final LC-M error gave PN-G the 25-19 win. In the fourth game PN-G raced out to a 6-1 lead behind the serve of Mallory Livingston who notched five straight points. LC-M did fight back behind the serve of Christine Sicktich, who had 16 kills, as the sophomore hit six straight points giving LC-M a 9-8 lead. Sicktich finished with 12 assists. The fourth game remained close until Livingston stepped back up to serve with a 16-14 lead and when she was done the Rock-A-Noos led 20-14. PN-G’s Alexis Smith finished the game with an ace giving her team the 25-16 win to force the final game. Williams changed the face of the final game as LC-M led 5-3 with two aces and four straight points to push PN-G into a 6-5 lead. Smith would later put the game on ice with seven straight service points and the final points came when Miller set Chelsea Horn for a kill as PN-G won 15-7. LC-M used the serve of Shayna Sheppard to battle back in Game 1 as the Lady Bears found themselves down 18-13. Sheppard hit seven straight points, including three aces, as LC-M took a 19-18. Blohm would later do the rest as she hit three straight points to end the game and the Lady Bears won 25-22. LC-M looked like a team on a mission in Game 2 as Blohm struck for seven kills in the game. LC-M’s Carly Gauthier took serve with the Lady Bears up 10-9 and left with LC-M up 14-10. Brittany Wiegand later struck for four straight points to push LC-M up 23-13. After Sicktich set Blohm up for a kill, a final PN-G error gave LC-M a 25-14 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. “We just had too many mental breakdowns,†Castino said. “The third game killed us. It seemed we would get some momentum and then something bad would happen.†LC-M returns to action Friday with a road trip to Beaumont Ozen, another pivotal District 22-4A match.
  10. Lady Cards sweep past Lady Mustangs Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Nobody has put up much of a challenge against the Bridge City Lady Cardinals in the District 21-3A volleyball race. Well, Tuesday night, the Lady Cardinals made the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs their eighth straight victim in 21-3A play as Bridge City stayed perfect in loop play with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-15 sweep at Mustang Gym. The win pushes the Lady Cardinals to 15-11 overall under the guidance of Coach Becca Mathews but more importantly, 8-0 in 21-3A play. Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs are still seeking their first 21-3A victory under Coach Gwen Kelly-Hall, falling to 0-8. The Lady Cardinals certainly spread the wealth out, putting three different players in double-digit kills. Leading the way was senior hitter Audrey Myers, who pounded out 12 kills. She also had an excellent outing serving the ball, notching 13 points and a whopping seven aces with her jump serve. Kayla Fullerton posted 11 kills to go along with five points and two aces. Lauren Angelle added a double-double, collecting 11 points and two aces to go along with 10 kills. Jenna Angelle garnered seven points and two aces while Emily Kosh added five points and three kills. “Despite winning all three games, the kids never got into a groove and that concerned me a little,†Mathews said. “The match was played at a slow pace and we like to play faster than that. West Orange-Stark played hard and made us earn almost every point.†Miquendria Warnell and Kia Hartfield paced the Lady Mustang attack with four kills apiece while Ishaneka Gant had three kills. Marcquishola Solomon added three points and two kills. Warnell had five points and two aces and Cayla Adams added five points. The Lady Mustangs kept Game One tight for awhile, trailing just 9-7. However, Myers and Fullerton teamed up for eight kills down the stretch to lead Bridge City on a 16-5 spurt to close it out. WO-S’ biggest lead of the match came at 4-2 in Game Two. The Lady Cardinals, behind the powerful hitting of Lauren Angelle and the serves of Myers, quickly regained momentum to go up 14-10. Hartfield was able to notch back-to-back kills to get the Lady Mustangs as close as 19-17 before the Lady Cardinals went on a 6-2 run to close out Game Two. Bridge City stayed in complete command of Game Three, jumping out to a 7-1 cushion. Fullerton, Myers and Lauren Angelle all had three kills apiece as Bridge City went up 18-8. The Lady Mustangs rallied back to 19-13 before the Lady Cardinals scored six of the match’s final eight points. The Lady Cardinals are looking to bring their ‘A’ game to Cardinal Gym Friday when they play host to the second-place Silsbee Lady Tigers. Bridge City downed the Lady Tigers in four games in Silsbee in the first half of 21-3A play. “That’s going to be our toughest match of the season right there,†Mathews said. “Everything fell right for us at their place. All of our best players were on their game and Silsbee’s top players had an off night. We don’t expect that again. A lot is riding on this one. If we win, we’ll be two games up in district, if we fall, we’ll be in a tie with Silsbee. I think our kids will be ready to go. That’s a match you look forward to and that’s what it’s all about.†The Lady Mustangs will seek their first 21-3A win Friday when they pay the Kirbyville Lady Wildcats a visit.
