  2. KICKOFF TIME LC-MAURICEVILLE AT NEDERLAND, PN-GROVES AT VIDOR The Port Arthur News • When: Friday, 7 p.m. • Where: Bulldog Stadium, Nederland • Records: LC-M 1-6, 0-4; Nederland 6-1, 3-1 • Series: Nederland leads 14-6 • Last year: Nederland, 15-12 • Radio: KLVI-AM (560) • Internet: www.klvi.com • Bears capsule: LC-M's defense permitted a season-high 425 yards last week, as visiting Dayton scored in every quarter and ripped out a 49-13 victory over coach Todd Moody's team at Bear Stadium.... Bears have dropped to minus 7 in their season's turnover ratio, committing more turnovers than each of their four district opponents so far.... LC-M is fourth (right under Nederland) in 22-4A total offense, averaging 285.9 yards a game. The Bears sport the league's second-leading rusher, senior FB Kendrix Salter (656 yards).... LC-M also enters with the league's third-ranked passer, as senior President Driver has thrown for 855 yards.... Receiver Phillip Richard has the league's highest receiving-yard average per catch with 27.7.... • Bulldogs capsule: ‘Dogs poise was tested in a 31-14 win last Friday over Ozen. Nederland fell behind early, came back and got great work from defenders Wareall Grogan, Jordan Landry, Adrian Pina and Jimmy Swain.... Those pass defenders and rushers limited Ozen to 13 passing yards, as NHS assured a break-even or a winning season under 15-year mentor Larry Neumann for the 15th straight time.... Soph QB Kirby Bellow is far-and-away 22-4A's passing leader with 15 TD passes, after he opened the year expecting to be a seldom-used reliever.... Another first-year starter, junior WR Asa Cardenas, practically has doubled every 22-4A cohort in receiving yardage. Asa is No. 1 in catches (50), receiving yards (750) and TD catches (10).... • Moody says: "We gained a lot of positives from the Dayton game. Our football team played hard with a lot of class and character..." * Neumann says: "I feel proud about what we accomplished against Ozen. We were down 14-3 and we made some plays to win. We're getting great play from our quarterback (Kirby Bellow) and our receiver (Asa Cardenas). He made a catch the other night that you had to see to believe.... From what I see on video, LC-M is still playing with a lot of enthusiasm. Offensively, it starts with their fullback (Kendrix Salter). He's a powerful runner and their quarterback (President Driver) is elusive in his own right. You throw in their good receiver (Phillip Richard) and he can take a short pass a long way... Defensively they have two very good linebackers (Joseph Viator and Darius Bob)." LC-M OFFENSE QB -- President Driver (24) TB -- Tony Gunn (15)
  3. www.panews.com PA NEWS GAME OF THE WEEK: WEST BROOK AT MEMORIAL Stump’s Bruins invade Thompson’s Turf By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News Twenty-years ago, following a controversial consolidation of Beaumont’s Hebert and Forest Park High Schools, West Brook sent shockwaves across Texas by winning the 5A state championship in its first season of existence. Ironically, West Brook finished second in the district to Port Arthur Jefferson. Even more ironic, the quarterback who led TJ over the Bruins for the district championship was named Craig Stump. Stump’s passing led the Yellow Jackets to a 28-14 victory over the Bruins. Fast-forward to today and the stage is set for Stump’s first visit to Port Arthur as the head coach of West Brook. For added sentimental value, across the sidelines will be Stump’s high school coach, Ronnie Thompson, who is now the head coach at Port Arthur Memorial. Not even 200 yards from the stadium is the house Stump grew up in. The outcome in his homecoming clash should determine whether Memorial gets its first win against the Bruins in four years, or if West Brook moves to 5-0 in District 21-5A and retains at least a share of the District 21-5A lead. ?t? going to be fun,†Stump said. ?t? going to be my first time in the visitor’s locker room. My parents still live in the same house right there by the stadium and I’m going to enjoy talking with Coach Thompson. I always enjoy visiting with him. We did this last year but this will be the first time for us to do it over there.†This is Stump’s fourth year as West Brook’s head coach. Hurricane Rita disrupted what would have been his visit to Port Arthur in 2005. Memorial’s other two meetings with the Titans have taken place in Beaumont. Meanwhile, the Bruins turnaround under Stump has been rather remarkable, and his 35-18 overall record with West Brook has his team on track for a fourth straight trip to the playoffs. “He is doing an outstanding job over there,†Thompson said. “I think the world of Craig. He is an all-around great guy. He was a great athlete and is possibly an even better coach. He has taken a sagging program, turned it around and very likely has them in the playoffs again this year. Even if they lose out they are in. “This is the first time he is coming over here as a coach, so perhaps it will be a little bit strange for him. Maybe that’s not the best word, but maybe for a moment, he might feel like he is on the wrong sideline.†Stump has the Bruins leading the district in both offense and defense. West Brook averages almost 393 yards of offense and only surrenders an average of 201 yards on defense. Baytown Lee and Memorial are the only other two teams in the district averaging more than 300 yards of offense. The Titans are moving the ball just shy of 341 yards per game and lead the district in passing yards with 1,657. Of the 1,409 yards the Bruins have surrendered this season, 913 have come through the air, which is right at 65 percent. This is some good news for the aerial assault Port Arthur brings to the table. Harry Brown leads the district with 1,465 passing yards and has thrown eight touchdowns. Most of that production has gone to receiver Freddie King who leads the district with 695 yards and 42 receptions. He has four touchdowns this season. Last year, Brown and King hooked up three times for touchdowns, and even helped the Titans take a 35-34 lead in the third quarter. Brown was not the starter in that game but had a considerable impact. He even ran in a 4-yard touchdown. In just those three touchdowns, Brown and King were able to amass 122 yards.

  14. Bonds likens departure from Giants to being 'fired' SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds is a tad bitter about his departure from the San Francisco Giants. The 43-year-old home run king heard a long list of his accomplishments read during a special speaking forum Wednesday night hosted by the Commonwealth Club, then was asked by KGO Radio host Ray Taliaferro if he'd really reached all those feats. Fourteen All-Star game selections. A record seven NL MVPs. Eight Gold Glove awards. "I did, and then I got fired," Bonds told a group of about 450 people in the audience. "Shame on me, huh?" Bonds, who broke Hank Aaron's home run record with No. 756 on Aug. 7, was told last month by Giants owner Peter Magowan that he would not be brought back for a 16th season in San Francisco. Bonds, dressed in a dark suit jacket and tie, entered to a roaring standing ovation and repeatedly drew loud applause from an adoring crowd through the nearly 90-minute forum. They chanted, "Barry! Barry!" One person hollered, "We love you." Others took pictures on cell phone cameras or sported shirts with Bonds' No. 25. Yes, this was a glorified pep rally in a swanky downtown San Francisco hotel featuring five ovations and two of those standing -- for a star baseball player who didn't even stick around when his team paid tribute to him with a video presentation during the final home game of the year. Outside the ballroom where he spoke, Game 1 of the World Series between the Red Sox and Rockies at Fenway Park showed on a TV. "I don't have fans in San Francisco -- this is my family," said Bonds, who used to bounce around the clubhouse at Candlestick Park as a boy while hanging out with his late father, Bobby, and Hall of Fame godfather Willie Mays. When Taliaferro asked about Bonds' many splash-hit home runs, the slugger replied, "They call it McCovey Cove, but I've rewritten it a little bit." That part of San Francisco Bay beyond the right field arcade of the Giants' waterfront ballpark is named for Hall of Famer Willie McCovey. Bonds, who just completed his 22nd major league season, has 762 career homers. Taliaferro read select questions from members of an audience that included actor Danny Glover, one asking Bonds whether he would play for $5 million and bat fifth for San Francisco if that were an option for 2008. "I told Peter Magowan, 'If I'm a part-time player, I'm still better than your full-time player, and it's a wise idea to keep me,"' Bonds said. "We still have time. Things might change." Bonds also said that if he were running the franchise, the Giants would have won a World Series by now. They fell five outs short in 2002, and one thing the slugger is still missing on his remarkable resume is a championship ring. "They've been here since 1958," Bonds said. "We'd win a World Series. I know the game so well. I can see talent. I know exactly what I'd be looking for." Is the club any closer to winning it all? "I can't answer that. I don't work there anymore," Bonds quipped, then howled in laughter. "My philosophy in sports is you don't break things up. You add to it." He soon added: "I'm rooting for the Giants. I'm not rooting against the Giants. This is my hometown." Where will he land for next season? Bonds doesn't know, but he doubts it's with the New York Yankees as a designated hitter. A move to the American League as a DH would be the logical next step for Bonds, whose balky knees and age have contributed to him being a step slow in left field lately. "I would consider DHing for the Yankees. Unfortunately, the Yankees have two DHs, so that dream would never happen," Bonds said. "I'm out enjoying my life. I don't know at this point what my plans are in the future." Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press
