  1. Ruling forces Hoover to forfeit wins due to ineligible player Hoover High, which has won five of the past seven Alabama 6A football titles, will have to forfeit all of its wins that Tristan Purifoy played in and pay a $2,000 fine. The Alabama High School Athletics Association told the school that it was in violation of recruiting and transfer rules regarding Purifoy, the team's leading wide receiver. Purifoy was found to have improperly participated at Hoover before he enrolled, and did not change his residency in a manner that met AHSAA rules Purifoy, who transferred from Hanceville (Ala.) High, will also be ineligible for any athletic events at Hoover for one year and the Buccaneers were placed on probation for three years, said Hoover High principal Kenneth Jarnagin. While the Buccaneers could still be eligible for the state high school football playoffs if they qualified despite the forfeits, any further violations could bring more sanctions. "We are trying our best to adhere to all state rules and make sure our program is run clean," Jarnagin said. "We will meet with our athletic department to make sure everyone has complete clarity on the rules and that we will have zero tolerance." Last week, assistant principal Carol Martin was transferred to an academic consultant position with the school. That followed a 68-page report by a retired federal judge that brought to light earlier AHSAA infractions by Hoover, incidents where athletes' grades were changed and other irregularities where athletes were given academic advantages not afforded other students, such as multiple retests. Hoover, 6-1 this season, was ranked No. 1 in last year's preseason USA TODAY Super 25 rankings

  8. Lady Cards down Silsbee to win 21-3A Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader SILSBEE — At least in their heads, which is probably all that matters to them anyway., the Bridge City Lady Cardinals can call themselves District 21-3A champions. The Lady Cardinals fought back from a 2-1 deficit to overtake the Silsbee Lady Tigers for a thrilling, 5-game victory in a one-match playoff to determine first and second seeding heading into the playoffs. Bridge City won the match 25-15, 22-25, 22-25, 25-18 and 15-11. The two squads will actually share the championship duties yet Bridge City was the one who walk away with the win both teams coveted. "Of course it meant a lot to win this match," Bridge City Coach Becca Mathews said. "I'm super proud of the team today because they never once gave up. Silsbee is an awesome team. This match could easily have went either way." Senior Audrey Myers led the match with an amazing 31 kills and also poured in 20 assists while sophomore sensation Emily Kosh had a match-high 36 assists. The two were far from alone as senior Lauren Angelle poured in 23 kills and 28 digs while twin sister Jenna Angelle was business as usual in the backcourt with a match-high 39 digs. While fellow senior Kayla Fullerton did not post any match-high statistics, she did however have a match changing block. In Game 5 with the Lady Cardinals up 13-9 and the Lady Tigers finding some momentum, Silsbee went to Brittany Henry to keep the pressure on Bridge City. As Henry, who had 13 kills to Silsbee, went up for a kill Fullerton went up as well. Fullerton denied Henry a point and came away with a block pushing the Lady Cardinals up 14-9. Fullerton finished the match with seven kills and two aces. It took three more plays for Bridge City to come away with a win and in the end it was Kosh finding Myers for a perfect set-and-kill. "Do you see me crying," Fullerton said when asked how much the match meant to her. "It is amazing. After the block happened, I seriously felt like I was on Cloud 9. I love my team. I am so proud of them. I know now we are going to do great in the playoffs." Fullerton and the Lady Cardinals stormed out to a quick 1-0 lead in the match only to see the Lady Tigers show the poise that made them 13-1 in District 21-3A play just like Bridge City. In Game 2 Silsbee shrugged off Bridge City who fought back from a six point deficit to tie the game at 19 on a Mallory Guidry ace. Silsbee's Demetriss Rhone, who had eight kills, hit two service points in a row to give the Lady Tigers a 23-20 cushion. Lauren Angelle ended the run with a kill but her serve then went directly out of bounds. Silsbee did not capitalize as its next serve went out. Henry then gave the Lady Tigers a 25-22 win in Game 2 with a kill set by Caitlin Callicutt, who finished the match with 27 assists. Bridge City then fought back in Game 3 as Silsbee went up 20-15 midway through the game. Lauren Angelle hit for six straight service points to give Bridge City a 22-20 lead. Silsbee did the rest of the scoring as Calicutt knocked home four straight points to end the game at 25-22. The Lady Cardinals were then the ones doing the shrugging in Game 4 as Bridge City did not blink at the thought of losing the match. Bridge City led the entire fourth game as Kosh got the Lady Cardinals off to a fast start with two straight points. Kosh and Myers hooked up six times in Game 4 for set and kills as the Lady Cardinals forced Game 5. Bridge City did lead at one point 9-2 in Game 4 only to of course see Silsbee never quit. Game 1 was all Bridge City the Lady Cardinals came out firing on all cylinders. Kosh had five service points in Game 1 and Myers had a run of four straight towards the end of the game. The Lady Cardinals will take the first round off and start their playoff run later next week.
  9. Lady Bears take down New Caney in bidistrict Van Wade The Orange Leader MONT BELVIEU — After shaking off some first-game jitters, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears proved who had the better team in their Class 4A Region III bid strict playoff battle against the New Caney Lady Eagles at Barbers Hill Gym. After dropping a two-point decision in Game One, the Lady Bears found their old aggressive ways to overpower the Lady Eagles 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-18. The win pushed the Lady Bears (21-15) to the area round of the playoffs Tuesday night where they will face highly-touted Friendswood. Long-time Lady Bear head coach Vicki Castino won the coin-flip against the Friendswood coach as the match will be played Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Lamar University's McDonald Gym. Without a doubt, it was a total team effort for the Lady Bears against a "game" group of Lady Eagles (19-17). Senior Morgan Blohm and sophomore Christine Sicktich led the LC-M power game once again but received plenty of help from their teammates. Blohm and Sicktich both collected 17 kills apiece as New Caney had no response to Sicktich's power slams and Blohm received nice short sets that she ripped all through the Lady Eagles' backcourt. Senior Kristi Trahan had a terrific playoff performance, slicing nine kills at the Lady Eagles. Fellow senior Jordyn Davis had six kills while Maci Wilcox had five kills. "The kids really came on strong when they had to," said Castino. "They were a little uptight in that first game because you could see their lips quivering at times. I told them to just go out and play their game and then they started to get after it. New Caney has a good team. They were a great challenge." Blohm also had a nice service game working, putting up 16 points. Shayna Sheppard brought a mean serve as well and really gave the Lady Bears a lift in Game Four. Sheppard finished with 11 points and two aces. Brittany Wiegand added eight points and two aces while Sicktich had seven points and two aces and Carly Gauthier contributed five points and an ace. The LC-M win offset a tremendous performance by New Caney hitter Keia Strother, who muscled her way to 15 kills, seven points and two aces. Jessica Clayburg contributed eight kills, 11 points an ace for the Lady Eagles attack. LaRyssa Wise also had eight kills and Roberta Cortopassi added five kills and five points. "That No. 11 (Strother) is an excellent player," Castino said. "I thought we had several more hitters going in and it showed in those last three games. Christine, Morgan, they were awesome. Trahan had a huge match. I thought we set the ball well most of the way and the kids were able to strike the ball well." New Caney stayed barely in command throughout Game One. However, a Wiegand ace drew the Lady Bears to within 24-23 before a Cortopassi smash sealed the game for the Lady Eagles. The Lady Bears had complete control of Game Two from the get-go, scoring the first four points. Blohm served up six straight points during a stretch that gave LC-M an 11-3 advantage and the Lady Bears went on to cruise to the win. LC-M looked like it was going to dominate in Game Three, streaking out to a 9-2 cushion. The Lady Eagles, behind Strother, kept whittling away at the lead and were able to tie it up at 17-17 and 22-22. However, the Lady Bears received a kill apiece from Blohm and Sicktich to tally three of the final four points to take the game by two. The Lady Bears darted out to a 10-4 lead in Game Four as it seemed as if they were going to run away with it. The Lady Eagles proved they had plenty of fight left by tallying 11 of the next 13 points to go up 15-12. LC-M quickly settled down though. Sheppard had a "mean" service game working as she ripped off six straight points, including two aces while Blohm put away two kills that put the Lady Bears back on top 19-15. "Everything came together for us after being really nervous at the start," Sheppard said. "I was just glad to help out the team there at the end. New Caney is a tough team but after we settled down, I think we all kinda realized that we were the better team." The Lady Eagles seemed to wilt under the pressure at that point with the Lady Bears closing out the match by ripping off six of the final nine points.
