  5. District 21-5A begins to sort itself out By Dave Rogers Published October 28, 2007 District 21-5A football is living up, or down, to preseason expectations this fall. It’s exciting, because just about anyone – but so far, not Sterling – can beat anyone on any given night. And it’s less than artistic, because, frankly, there are so few complete teams. The proper expression should be that anybody – and especially Sterling — can lose to anyone on any given night. Coaches at Lee were marveling last week at their 29-23 victory over Port Arthur Memorial. “I still haven’t figured out how we won that game,†one of them told me four days later. “Halfway through the fourth quarter, I was already planning how we were going to come back from the defeat. The next thing I know, Thomas Bates runs a fumble back 80 yards for a touchdown. We get another touchdown and we win.†Beaumont West Brook is clearly the class of the league. The Bruins should go far in the playoffs for the third straight year. Third-year coach Craig Stump may have had a more talented team last year, but this one is better because the players have been around Stump three years so their understanding and execution of the coach’s schemes are better. Humble, after a close-up look, is one of the least impressive 7-1 teams I’ve seen. They average scoring fewer than 20 points a game. But coach Walt Beasley’s Wildcats are efficient. They converted five of seven third downs and two of two fourth downs in three consecutive long scoring drives in their 21-12 win over Lee. Those drives included a combined 34 plays and ate up nearly 40 percent of the game clock. West Brook and Humble clinched playoff berths Friday by each improving to 5-0 in 21-5A. Humble will play in the big-school Division I bracket and West Brook in the small-5A Division II. After that, it gets interesting. Lee stands in third place at 3-2, with Channelview, Port Arthur and Kingwood all at 2-3 and still with good shots at the post-season. The Ganders host Channelview Friday, then finish the regular season at 1-4 Atascocita. Channelview has the toughest remaining schedule with Lee and a final regular season game at home against West Brook, a team it upset last year. Port Arthur hosts 0-4 Sterling Friday, then finishes at Humble. Kingwood has the easiest remaining schedule, hosting Atascocita, then coming to Stallworth Stadium to play Sterling. The Mustangs, 0-6 overall nine days ago, could finish 4-6 and in the playoffs. The Ganders would like that, if they can get into the playoffs. If Lee makes the playoffs and Kingwood doesn’t, Lee would be 21-5A’s No. 2 team in Division I and face another bi-district meeting with North Shore, which is off to another 8-0 start. If Kingwood makes the playoffs, the Mustangs would be 21-5A’s No. 2 team in Division I and have to face North Shore. If Kingwood makes the playoffs, whichever team emerges from the remaining three contenders – Lee, Channelview and Port Arthur — would face Pasadena Memorial, which is currently 7-0, in Division II bi-district. Humble appears headed to a Division I first-round draw of Deer Park (currently 6-2) while West Brook will probably face South Houston (4-3) in Division II. d, but we should have been in that situation anyway.â€

  7. PA News Player of the Week The Port Arthur News Tramain Thomas, East Chambers — In what head coach, Tony Valastro, called one of the best games he had ever seen, Tramain Thomas anchored the Bucs to a 34-33 win over Buna in a battle of 7-0 ball clubs. After Thomas rushed for 188 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries, EC moved to 8-0 while Buna took its first loss of the season. Thomas performance earned him top-honors for player-of-the-week for the second time this season. On top of his rushing numbers, Thomas also threw for 74 yards on 5-of-8 passing. On defense, Tramain picked off two passes and made several tackles. “It was one of the best individual performances I have ever seen, if not the best performance I have ever seen in high school football,†Valastro said. “A lot of his yards were extra yards that came from second efforts and came after first contact. It was absolutely an unbelievable performance.†Honor Roll Chris Gutierrez, Nederland — This defensive all-star and sometimes fullback for the Bulldogs put on quite a show during Nederland’s 35-7 beating of LC-M on Friday night, helping his team stay involved in a three team race for the final two playoff spots in District 22-4A. Gutierrez provided the Dogs with 18 tackles, including six assists. Head coach Larry Neumann said Gutierrez graded out at a 90. Derrick Evans, Orangefield — While the combination of Jeremy Granger and Jerod Helton provided 191 yards and two touchdowns for the Bobcats, it was Evans’ foot that made the difference in Friday night’s 17-14 victory over Hamshire-Fannett. With the score at a tight 14-7, Evans nailed a 25-yard field goal in the third quarter to narrow the game to 14-10, setting up the Bobcats for a go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. Jake Hemmings, Port Neches-Groves — In a game that featured a total of 21 points, this running back led the Indians with 134 yards on 20 carries, helping the Purple and White move on to a 14-7 victory over Vidor on Friday night. With the win, PN-G moved to 5-0 in District 22-4A and remained in sole possession of the district’s top-spot. Terry Coleman, Memorial — In a season of frustration and many ups and downs, this linebacker had a very good game during a 42-21 losing effort to West Brook on Friday night. Coleman finished with 11 tackles, including six assists and two tackles for losses. Coleman also had a quarterback knockdown. Defensive coordinator Curtis Viola said Coleman graded out at a 92. Joe Robertson, Bridge City — This running back tallied up 174 yards on 27 carries and provided two touchdowns for the Cardinals on Friday night. Hagan Daigle, Hamshire-Fannett — Friday night’s 17-14 loss to Orangefield was a difficult one to take for the Longhorns, but Daigle provided the team’s first touchdown of the game when he punched in a 5-yard run. Daigle finished the night with 42 yards on 11 carries.

  11. Lady Bears face state power Friendswood Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Aggressive play helped lead the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears to a dramatic four-game victory over the New Caney Lady Eagles in the bidistrict round of the Class 4A Region III playoffs. The Lady Bears (21-15) and long-time head coach Vicki Castino will be looking to put all of their ducks in a row and will have to be on top of their game like never before tonight when they take on the District 23-3A champion Friendswood Lady Mustangs (31-6) at Lamar University’s McDonald Gym in the 4A area round. Without question, the Lady Mustangs have been tested. They went a perfect 14-0 in one of the state’s most grueling districts against the likes of folks like Angleton, Dickinson, Texas City and Santa Fe. That’s quite an accomplishment. Let’s go a step further. Friendswood is the defending Region III champions. The Lady Mustangs went 35-6 last season, falling to Vista Ridge in the semifinals at the State Tournament 25-17, 18-25, 25-11, 25-11. An even scarier thing on Halloween Eve, the Lady Mustangs only lost one senior off last year’s unit. The Lady Bears, however, are going to take on Friendswood with gleaming confidence as they look to produce a few tricks instead of becoming a treat. “Our kids are raring to go and can’t wait for the challenge,†Castino said. “To try to be the best, you have to line up and beat the best. Our kids aren’t nervous at all. We had a super practice this morning (Monday). The kids still feel awesome after beating New Caney. They don’t plan to be intimidated.†The Lady Mustangs are led by the vast experience of Andi Kinsel, Christie Dorch, Jessie Hays, Whitney Rhoden and Charlotte Matta. “All I know at this point is that they have three or four outstanding hitters, and they outstading defense,†Castino said. “From what I’ve heard, they are supposedly the best team in the region again.†The Lady Bears are certainly battled-tested, playing in what was such a rugged District 22-4A this season. A season that produced so many five-game matches, including several that the Lady Bears were involved in. “Our kids were certainly tsted in district and also in the Northwest Tournament in Dallas that we’ve going to,†Castino said. “We’ve seen a lot of good teams this year and I think we have a pretty good team too.†The Lady Bears have been led by the likes of heavy hitters like seniors Morgan Blohm, Jordyn Davis and Kristi Trahan, along with junior Maci Wilcox and sophomore Christine Sicktich. They certainly led the way in the 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-18 win against New Caney as they teamed up for 54 kills. “The kids showed their nerves early,†Castino said. “I told them to just go out and be yourselves and they did. We got really aggressive when we had to and we just kinda took over from their. We’re going to need the same kind of tough play against Friendswood. We have to play good from the very start of the match.†Castino won the coin flip against Lady Mustang coach Jerry Linch as the Lady Bears will get to stay close to home at McDonald Gym instead of heading to Crosby High School to play. “The girls are excited about playing at Lamar and the facility is super-nice,†Castino said. “Hopefully we’ll have a big old crowd supporting the Lady Bears.†The Lady Bears have also received excellent defense and sets from the likes of Shayna Sheppard, Brittany Wiegand and Carly Gauthier. The winner of the LC-M-Friendswood enconter will face the winner of Dickinson-Barbers Hill in the regional quarterfinals later this week.
