Kansas team scores 72 in first quarter; wins 83-0 SMITH CENTER, Kan. -- Smith Center scored 72 points in the first quarter of a high school football game Tuesday night on the way to an 83-0 win over Plainville, according to a report in the Salina, Kan., Journal. Smith Center forced six turnovers in the first quarter as it racked up what is believed to be a record for points in a quarter by a high school team, the paper reported. The previous record was 66 by Prescott, Ariz., in 1925. The defending state champion has outscored its opponents 640-0 so far this season, including a 69-0 win over Plainville earlier this year. October 31, 2007 Lamar State-PA basketball team opens season Thursday in Beeville Lamar State College-Port Arthur head basketball coach Don Bryson heads into Thursday's season opener at Coastal Bend College in Beeville with a much stronger team than the ones he coached in his first three years at the college. This year, Bryson has a larger roster and more talented players, including 10 who earned all-district honors in high school. In the early years, Bryson often had a short list of players, and many who weren't ready for the intense competition they saw against Division I schools that provide full scholarships, housing and meals for their athletes. Lamar State currently is playing in Division III, with no scholarships. The Seahawks will join the Division I Region XIV conference for the 2008-09 season. By the time the Seahawks reached the Metro Conference Tournament this past March, Bryson had only six players on the active roster. Starting guard Noah Cole was knocked unconscious during the first half of the first tournament game, leaving only five players to finish the contest, which the Seahawks won, 72-69. "We've seen improvement every year, and that's certainly true this year," Bryson said. "Although we only have two players returning - Noah and forward Cody Guidry - our team quickness and shooting is considerably better than last year. We have several players now who can hit from the outside, which will help our inside game." Cole, a 5'-11" sophomore from Vidor, earned all-conference honorable mention this past year and is continuing where he left off at the end of the season. "Noah has been working on his game in the off-season," Bryson said. "He also is doing what it takes to be a leader on the floor." Guidry (6'-4"), a sophomore from Hamshire-Fannett, had to play "tall" last year as a forward, often guarding players who were several inches taller, Bryson said. "This year, we've got some other tall folks, so Cody will be able to move around," Bryson said. "He does whatever is necessary to help the team, no matter what position he plays. You can always count on him to be around the ball." This year's Seahawks squad includes two of Cole's former teammates at Vidor - brothers George and Jason Williamson, who both earned all-district first team honors. George, a 2005 graduate, was the runner-up for the James Gamble "Mr. Outside" Award and the offensive player of the year as a senior. Jason was the team's MVP in 2007. Bryson also has some players who are returning to the area after playing at other schools. Point guard Jemel Douriso, a finalist for the James Gamble "Mr. Outside" Award in 2004, is a Port Neches-Groves graduate who earned district offensive player of the year, all-district and all-region honors. Former Ozen High School teammates Andre "P-Nutt" Boutte, formerly at Lee College, and David Redmon, formerly at Angelina College, are reunited at Lamar State. Sam Stelly, a 6'-4" forward, was one of the top high school tight ends in the state when he graduated from Beaumont West Brook in 2006 and signed with Southern University. Seth Harley (6'-4"), a 2006 graduate of Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School and former all-district and all-region player, was a basketball and football standout in high school. He received a football scholarship from McNeese State University, but decided to return home and pursue basketball this year. Bryson's team also includes 6'-5" post John Payton, who earned all-district and all-state recognition at Cathedral High School in Beaumont, and 6'-4" forward Gerald Griffin, a two-year all-district player at Lake Charles Washington-Marion High School. 2007-08 Lamar-Port Arthur Seahawks Roster Name/Number Ht/Wt Year Position High School 10 Jemel Douriso 5'-10" 150 freshman guard Port Neches-Groves, 2004 12 David Redmon 5'-10" 165 freshman guard Beaumont Ozen, 2006 13 Jason Williamson 6'-1" 185 freshman guard Vidor, 2007 14 Raybon "R.J." Titans Coleman portrait in courage By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News Brave. To put it simply, brave means a person who shows courage under difficult circumstances. Memorial’s Terry Coleman probably doesn’t think of himself as brave. He’s quiet and reserved, yet the junior linebacker’s actions this season have spoken volumes of just how brave he is. On Tuesday, Sept. 18, Terry lost his mother, Cangela Coleman, to colon cancer. She fought hard and was in and out of the hospital through the summer. Terry was always with her. From practice, to school, to the hospital, to bed, he balanced his life around his mother, around his best friend. ?t was hard,†he said. ?t still is hard. It was hard in the summer because I was going through summer workouts while she was in the hospital. I didn’t want to miss workouts. There were some nights that I stayed with her at the hospital. A lot of nights really.†Cangela got better toward the end of the summer but just a few weeks into the school year she was back in the hospital. ? stayed with her then too,†Coleman said. ?he was my best friend, you know. We liked to watch movies together. We would go run at the track together. She was always there for me. I? tell her about my problems, my worries. “he got sick again before our first game. She never got to see me play, but I know she’s watching me now though.†Coleman said his mother always encouraged him and no matter what was going on, Cangela’s advice for her son was to always keep after his goals. ?he always told me to ‘keep doing what IÃm doing,’ †he said. That’s exactly the motto Terry has lived by this season. He has shown perseverance when the strongest would fall. Just two days after his mother passed away, Terry was on the field with his team for Memorial’s game against Houston Lamar. ? know thatÃs what she would have told me to do,†he said. ?f I could have asked her, she would have told me to play.†Defensive coordinator Curtis Viola said Coleman is one of the best kids he has ever been around. ? have a lot of respect for that kid,†Viola said. ?e doesn’t give up at anything. To go what he’s going through, to get back on the field just two days after his mother passed away, to want to be there for his teammates, he is just a tremendous kid

PNG falls to Santa Fe By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News The wrong Indians won in Mont Belvieu on Teusday night. Instead of the Lady Indians of Port Neches-Groves riding their 14-0 district record into the area round of the Class 4A playoffs with confidence, the Santa Fe Lady Indians mauled Rock-A-Noos in three games. PN-G was never really involved in the match. They lost 25-9, 25-16 and 25-15. Indians head coach Barbara Comeaux said she was very proud of her team’s accomplishments this season but would have liked a better showing against Santa Fe. “We didn’t play like the team that got us here,†she said. “It’s disappointing to lose like that. I’m proud of my girls, but you never want to go out like that. We didn’t play with any confidence. We were never on the attack. We never moved our feet.†With the loss, Rock-A-Noos finished its season 24-9. With the win, Santa Fe improves to 28-12, including two victories over PN-G this season. Earlier in the season, Santa Fe beat Rock-A-Noos during tournament play. That match went five games. Tuesday night’s game in Barbers Hill’s gymnasium was a much different story, however. Santa Fe’s Tara Frantz, Kinsey Mims and Regina Trapp over powered and outmatched Rock-A-Noos all night, combining for 44 kills and 20 blocks. Mims led the way with 17 kills while Trapp led with 11 blocks. “We did not play tonight,†Comeaux said. “I knew this team was going to be tough but they shouldn’t have beat us like that. They have a good offense, you have to give credit to them but I felt like we were coming in here with enough momentum that we could compete and give ourselves a chance to win. We played a very good team who played a very good game and we didn’t play at all.†PN-G never got on the offensive. Rock-A-Noos only held leads three times in the match. In Game 2, PN-G got out to a 2-1 lead and went ahead 7-6. Game 2 was tied 9-9 when Santa Fe left Rock-A-Noos in the dust, scoring six straight points to build a 15-9 lead. Santa Fe’s long runs made the difference all night. PN-G, meanwhile, was led by Kayla Prasnicki who posted six kills and nine digs for the Lady Indians. Mallory Livingston contributed five service points, Sami Jo Williams had two aces, Paige Miller had nine assists and Brandi Guidry had eight assists. Rock-A-Noos will graduate four players from this year’s squad, including Prasnicki, Williams, Kourtney Benoit and Lindsey Holland.

www.panews.com Broussard, Walker boost PN-G ‘D’ By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News PORT NECHES -- Carl Broussard needed Port Neches-Groves and PN-G's football program needed Broussard. Senior linebacker Kaleb Walker is delighted it worked out that way. The Indians had to shop quickly last summer after Pat Fischer resigned as defensive coordinator in late June. PN-G head coach Matt Burnett received all sorts of favorable vibes about Broussard, the defensive coordinator for the past five years at Hamshire-Fannett. Hamshire-Fannett did not wish to promote Broussard as Paul Walker's successor as head coach last spring. That caused the 45-year-old McNeese State graduate to need a coaching job during the summer. The rest has evolved almost as flawlessly as PN-G's 5-0 run through the District 22-4A schedule. Burnett hired the right guy. With his Cajun heritage more than welcome, Broussard fit into PN-G like a hand in a glove. It’s been the same fit for Walker and Broussard’s defense. Leading the team with 64 tackles and 43 assists, the 17-year-old son of Shane and Donna Walker has benefitted greatly from the coaching hire. Broussard and Walker's common denominator has been intelligence, hard work, preparation and really more intelligence. Walker is merely ranked No. 1 academically in his senior class with a 4.5 grade average. A starter at one of two critical inside linebacker spots, the young brother of former Indians' linebacker Jacob Walker serves as President of PN-G's National Honor Society chapter. Fittingly enough, Kaleb's vice president -- senior Austin Miller -- occupies that adjacent inside linebacker job. It's an interesting combination and it certainly matters that PN-G plays a high-caliber of defense. The Indians' defense needed one of its better performances last Friday at Vidor to outlast the inspired Pirates, 14-7. Neither Walker nor Miller might quality as a muscle-bound linebacker-type such Chicago Bears' all-pro Brian Urlacher. That's fine with the Indians' defensive coordinator. Broussard likes his linebackers to possess lots of smarts. Walker obviously ranks second to none in that department. "This has been a joy," the Indians defensive coordinator said. "The best linebackers I've ever had were 3.0 and above students. A lot of people think it's all about just brute strength and speed but it's not. Kaleb has to know the whole defense. "I'd rather have a smart guy than just a 'he' man because our defense is kinda complicated. We don't line up the same way every time. Being able to line up in the right place is the most important thing. And Kaleb is really amazing because he has one of those photographic memories." Broussard can mention a detail to Walker during practice on Monday and Kaleb's got it. The Indians' defensive coordinator does not have to refresh Walker's memory later in the week or during a game. He doesn't have to tell Walker something twice. That's why it's a joy for the coach. When it comes to working with Broussard, Walker has found the joy on his side of their relationship, too. He sees the knowledge and preparation level which PN-G's defensive coordinator devotes to his job. Broussard is doing an outstanding job of putting Walker and his fellow Indians defenders in a position to win. "He's a really hard worker," Walker said of his coach. "He comes up with a lot of stuff. He studies a whole lot. He's really helped our team to get where we are. We've executed what he's taught us. We come in Monday and he will already be prepared. I don't think we would be where we are without him."
