Lady Cats down Lady Bears, 69-39 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Talk about turning up the intensity in the second half. The Orangefield Lady Bobcats could not buy a basket Thursday in the first half against the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears and then woke up in the third period. The Lady Bears were forced to watch the Lady Bobcats run away with a 69-39 victory in Day 1 of the Orangefield Lady Bobcat Tournament. Orangefield’s Olivia Wagner scored a career-high 20 points while junior Allie Beach had a terrific double-double with 10 blocks and 10 rebounds. LC-M’s Ellen Williams fought off foul trouble to have a team-high 15 points, which included three three pointers. The two teams played earlier this season and it was Orangefield (8-5, 1-0) coming away with a 56-31 win. “We got after it in teh third period,†first-year Orangefield Coach Chris Jost said. “We had a little chat at the half and they responded. I think we had a little hangover from Tuesday because we were ice cold in the first half.†The Lady Bobcats had a strong 74-49 win over Silsbee Tuesday to start District 21-3A play off on the right foot. While Orangefield’s offense and defense seemed to both be in sync in the second half, LC-M was fighting foul trouble all night long. Four plays for the Lady Bears (3-7, 0-1) finished the night with at least four fouls. Fouls kept starters Ellen Williams, Amber Solieau and Nardis McBride on the bench for a ton of time in the first half. The Lady Bears did find a way to creep to within 15-9 midway through the second period after a Katie Harrell free throw followed a shot from Maci Wilcox. A pair of free throws from Shelly Conn ended the first half and Orangefield was up 24-15 at the break. LC-M then had its best scoring period of the night in the third only to see Orangefield increase its lead. The Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Bears 24-16. Then Orangefield went on a 21-8 run in the game’s final eight minutes to snare the 69-39 victory. Jessica Weldon had a strong for the Lady Bobcats with six steals and six rebounds while senior Kaylin Little added 15 points, seven steals and seven rebounds. Laura Riddick for Orangefield put in 13 points and five rebounds while Wagner added five steals and nine rebounds. Christian Hailey had six points for the Lady Bears while McBride snared six rebounds in the loss. Taylor Thompson had five rebounds while both Conn and Wilcox each had four boards. In other tournament action on Thursday, the Sulphur, La. Lady Tors got a 39-26 win over the Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians. Wyatt led the Lady Tors with 14 points in the victory while Miller finished with eight for the Lady Indians. The game was tied at 18 at the break before Sulphur outscored PN-G 9-2 in the third. Friday action begiins at 10:30 a.m. when PN-G takes on HCYA. LC-M will face Needville at noon, Sulphur will take on HCYA at 4:30 p.m. and Orangefield will face Needville at 6 p.m. All games will be played in the new gym.
