DISD official: Roosevelt players will be punished Postgame scuffle video shows football player striking opposing coach 01:51 AM CST on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 By DAMON L. SAYLES / The Dallas Morning News [email protected] Dallas ISD athletic director Jeff Johnson said Tuesday some Roosevelt football players are being punished for their actions during last Saturday's playoff game against Gilmer. Video shows Roosevelt players charging the Gilmer sideline after Gilmer's 42-36 Class 3A Division I Region II championship win at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. One Roosevelt player was shown "Rest assured, it's being handled internally through our student code of conduct," Johnson said. "We don't condone what went on, and it will be handled accordingly. "We're still investigating the whole situation and want to hear all sides of the story. If more justice needs to be passed on, it'll be passed on." Roosevelt coach Joseph Daniels and principal Myrtle Jean Dixon did not return phone messages Tuesday. Gilmer ISD superintendent Rick Albritton said he has spoken with several DISD representatives, including superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa, trustee Lew Blackburn and spokesperson Jon Dahlander. Albritton said all parties called to express their apologies and regrets. No major injuries were reported, and Albritton said that no legal action will be taken. The trophy presentation for the regional championship was delayed until officials on the field restored order. "Most of the kids acted with great dignity and honor, but some kids just made some bad decisions. Kids sometimes do that," Albritton said. "This needs to be a school matter, and I'm sure the Dallas ISD will handle it as such." The skirmish put a damper on one of the best games of the season. The teams were tied at 36 until Gilmer's Justin Johnson, who has committed to Oklahoma, scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 3:16 left to play. "It's a very unfortunate situation because it didn't have to end that way," Johnson said. "My regret is that they didn't get a chance to shake hands and congratulate each other. You have to be gracious in wins and gracious in losses."

H-F stampedes by WO-S, 63-23 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader There was a time not too long ago when it was the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs were the ones putting a bruising on opponents. Tuesday night in Mustang Gym it was the Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns returning the favor as the visitors waltzed away with a 63-23 victory. WO-S (0-6, 0-1) actually came away with more turnovers, 33, than points as Hamshire-Fannett improved to 7-2 overall and 1-0 to start District 21-3A play. WO-S Coach James Thrash was short on words after the contest and could only say one will have to see Friday how the Lady Mustangs wil respond. “We are a better team than that,†Thrash said. “To only score 23 points in district at home, I cannot accept that.†The Lady Longhorns got a game-high 17 points from Kendra Wright while Yvonne Vega finished with 11 and Chelsea Atkins added 10 points in the victory. Demitrius Heard had a team-high five points and eight rebounds for the Lady Mustangs. Earlisha Thomas, Kristin Lebouef and Michel’e Simpson each had four points for the Lady Mustangs. The second period is where the wheels started to fall off for WO-S after H-F was only up 16-7 after the first eight minutes. The Lady Longhorns started the second frame on a 11-0 run to take a 27-7 lead. WO-S did not score its first points in the second frame until there was 5:40 remaining on the clock. The Lady Longhorns would go on to outscore the Lady Mustangs 26-8 in the second to take a 42-15 lead into the break. Hamshire-Fannett would then outscore WO-S 14-4 in the third to take a 56-19 advantage into the fourth. H-F out-rebounded WO-S 32-25 in the game. WO-S was 2-for-7 from the free throw line while Hamshire-Fannett was 8-for-16 from the charity stripe. The Lady Mustangs return to action Friday with a home game against the Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians.
