Good news for the Tigers is that they're ice cold from the field, apart from the first two minutes their press has been largely ineffective, and they're still up at the half.

Good news that they are ice cold and still in the game.... but bad news that their press is not effective. The press is  very big part of their game, as we all know.

I know this wasn't what you meant, but I think most 3A schools who have to face a squad pulling talent from a major city are going to face a pretty terrible matchup.  I think of our local 3A schools, and the towns of a 1000-2000 (or less) people that they're in, with the tiny talent pools the draw from, and then I look at a school like Dallas Madison.  Santa Rosa had approximately 2700 people during the last census.  Dallas had 1.3 million.  and while Madison does not have the full run of the city when it comes to their talent, i think it's safe to say their talent pool is infinitely deeper than the schools they beat to get here.   It just doesn't set right with me for big city schools to play in 4A and 3A.

2A Grapeland falls in this category too...... They are right in the midst of the DFW metro-area.

Could Silsbee be the area's WO-S for basketball ? Both undersized teams with overwhelming athletics

    WO-S football

2014- heartbreaking loss in state championship

    2015- state championship

    2016- state championship

    Silsbee baskeball

2016- heartbreaking loss in state championship

    2017- state title

    2018- rinse and repeat ?

Might wanna pump the breaks just a little bit and focus on one game at a time. I know Silsbee is the local favorite, and there is no reason to expect them to lose either of the next two games. However, there always seems to be "that one team" out there that nobody sees coming. The team that is a bad match-up, or the team that is more disciplined, or the team that is just flat out better. Let's not forget that two years ago all of SETX was ready to give Big Sandy the 2A state title with a bow on top. They beat several 3A state tourney level teams, beat several big name ranked 4A teams, and nobody in 2A could compete with them. Then in the state final, out of nowhere came Canadian from way up in the panhandle.

I'm not predicting a Silsbee loss, I'm just saying some of yall might wanna pump the breaks a little. Maybe Silsbee is literally in a separate universe than the rest of 4A this year, I don't know. I haven't watched enough ball this year to give an accurate opinion on that. All I know is that after watching Big Sandy lose 2 years ago, after they obliterated almost every team they played that year regardless of classification, I will never again assume that one certain team is a lock to win it all.

I saw Damien Bush, young Bush's dad, play for Silsbee in 95.   When and how he got to town I don't know.  I love my hometown of Silsbee, but I've been living in H Town for a minute, so I ain't up on the daily details.  But if young Bush's dad was in Silsbee in 95, shoot homeboy is from Silsbee.  People in small country towns have long memories though.  I don't remember Willie Jones II at all.  I think someone said he played on the same team as Bush Sr.

That's how that thing goes.  Silsbee & other small towns have been feeding dna, players etc., to Beaumont, Houston, and even Dallas Austin, and San Antonio for many years.  Have all the players in WOS been born & raised in the city limits?  I doubt it., but that's 'nother whole Oprah Winfrey special.  No  I am not implying someone is cheating.  Moving around to a certain extent is basic human nature.

Fun fact regarding these small towns that produce great DNA: J.T. Barrett (QB for Ohio State) has family roots in Buna. His dad grew up and went to school in Buna, then ended up moving away (I believe because he was in the military). That is how J.T. ended up going to school in Wichita Falls. If his dad had been the typical small town homebody that never left Buna, then J.T. Barrett would have played football right here in SETX (but i doubt it would have been for Buna). He still has a big chunk of family that lives in Buna and he comes to visit from time to time.

That type of useless info is interesting to me lol.

  5. There are always gonna be kids that transfer to the bigger or better schools, that's just the way it is. I don't know all the rules and regulations regarding transferring, but it doesn't make much difference to me either way. If a kid is a talented athlete growing up in a school with a poor athletic program, then they will usually find a way to move to a better program. Or if a kid and his family thinks that he has a real shot at making it to the next level, then they may transfer to a larger school for more publicity/exposure. It's just the nature of the beast. It sucks when you are the school losing top shelf talent and athleticism, but that's the way it is and you can't blame the kids or their families. I just hope Buna becomes a good enough program that we can keep our homegrown talent like we did 15+ years ago instead of losing them to surrounding schools like we have for the past decade or so.

  6. I'm not going, but I would love to see Lipan. That starting lineup is ridiculous and sounds more like the lineup for some prep school rather than a tiny 1A. Its hard to imagine a school that small being so stacked with size. And it sounds like those boys live and breathe basketball..... Those small schools that live and breathe the game are fun to watch, and are usually good enough that they could compete for the 2A or 3A title.

Do you guys think if Bush and Jones stayed at Legacy they would've been State champs this year and how much did Silsbee improve with Tyler,Bush, and Jones addition

Lol sounds like somebody is a little sour about losing their star players to Silsbee. I can relate though..... When I was in school at Buna we lost a couple of standout athletes when they transferred to Silsbee; one for basketball and one for football. Can't say I blame them though; Silsbee was/is a better all around athletic program and a bigger school.

What's crazy is I talk to a guy that watched Buna game. He is a neutral fan and feels that Kountze will beat La Marque for some reason assuming we get past Teague .

I wouldn't put money on it, but when it gets to this point in the season and Kountze is still standing I wouldn't put money against them either. Honestly anybody can win on any given night this late in the season. Unless you are in 4A, then you might as well just forfeit to Silsbee LOL.

  9. 8 minutes ago, AggiesAreWe said:

Might I remind you that Silsbee went to LaMarque this season and beat them on their home court 102-74. ;)

Correct. I did not say they are on Silsbee's level this year. I said they have been on Silsbee's level the last couple years, which is a completely correct statement. I think it is safe to say that nobody in all of 3A is anywhere close to Silsbee's level this year lol.

And I would also add that any team playing within 30 points of this year's Silsbee is a pretty dang good team, especially for a 3A team.

I think this team is probably Jouberts best coaching job he has done.

Joubert has pulled a rabbit out the hat with this team. I don't think anyone (other than the players) thought they would still be playing at this point in the season. This reminds me of the 2012 run when a similar Kountze team upset Edgewood in the Reg. Semis and almost knocked off #1 White Oak in the Regional Finals.

Very correct statements. There are two primary reasons that Kountze has the ability to make it to Regionals every year:   A.) Joubert is a great coach and he implements a playing style that does not rely on superstar performances, but it rely's on hustle and teamwork.  B.) The kids at Kountze have such a strong confidence after 20+ years of winning at a high level that they literally believe they can make it to state every year no matter what the roster looks like.

If you take this same group of kids, put them with a mediocre coach, and take that "Kountze Confidence" away from them, then they are probably going out in the 2nd round of the playoffs. That's not meant as a knock on this group of kids, but it is a testament to their extreme confidence and Joubert's ability as a coach.

Fundamental team on the outskirts of Austin. Picture this year's Buna team with two additional athletes. I always wonder how they keep getting back to Region 3 though. They're really a Region 4 team and if they were in their correct region they would be a lock for the State Tournament.

If that is the case then it should be a good game between Jarrell and La Marque. I felt like Buna had the right style to beat La Marque, they were just out-manned. I still pick the winner of this game to end up winning the whole region.

    Jarrell vs LaMarque

    Kountze vs Teague

    Who's in the finals?

Who makes the trip to San Antonio?

Pulling for Kountze so that our district can represent region 3 at state for the 3rd year in a row. But I don't think anybody is getting past La Marque unless Jarrell is some kind of a bad match-up for them. La Marque is my pick to win state unless they run into a team that has size and plays very fundamental basketball.

  13. Congrats on a solid season Buna. Keep your heads up because you just lost to a team that has been on Silsbee's level for the last couple of years. The third round probably isn't as far as you boys hoped to get, but it is nothing to hang your head about. There was a time not very long ago when it truly felt like Buna basketball was dead forever, and a trip to the playoffs was so far out of sight it wasn't even funny. Now we have made the playoffs 3 years in a row, and made it to the regional quarter finals the last two years. The players, coach Whitmire and his staff have all made the home folks proud.

Sometimes you have to, it's called adjusting. Try to play your game, but when the other team is playing your game better than you ADJUST! LaMarque is going to get up and down the court better than Buna will, I've seen both teams play multiple times this season. Buna is going to have to hit the 3 ball and push when they can, but if it turns into a track meet Buna doesn't have a chance.  Whitmire will have a game plan, and I'm sure they will give LaMarque all they can.

People forget this team has been to state the last 2 years in 4A, and gave Lincoln all they could handle last season.

Your last comment is exactly the point I made earlier. They were 3 pts away from playing silsbee in the 4A title game a year ago

  15. Does anybody know what La Marque's playing style is?? Are they a fast, athletic team that likes to apply a lot of pressure like Silsbee/Kountze? Or are they more of a slow paced, methodical, half-court team?

I didn't realize it until I went back and looked at the playoff brackets from last year, but La Marque was a state tourney team in 4A last year, and they lost to state champ Dallas Lincoln by 3 pts in the semi-final game. And they only had 3 seniors on that team.... Just more discouraging info for Buna folks.

But as others have already stated, its the playoffs and anything is possible. And if anyone is capable of pulling off an upset it is Buna.

  16. I'm hoping for the best for Buna, but they are certainly the major underdog in this one. From what I have read in other threads, it sounds like La Marque is more like a legit 4A team rather than a good 3A team. Unbiased observers who have seen both Buna and La Marque say that La Marque is on another level.

Buna is kinda screwed either way because IF they get past La Marque, then they will most likely get # 3 Jarrel in the Regional Semis. Its probably safe to say that Buna has the toughest road to the Regional Finals out of any SETX team..... Two top 5 teams in their bracket. They should have just let Kountze have the 1 seed lol.

Nevertheless, this is the playoffs and Buna is a solid team, so I guess anything is possible.

If they handle the Kountze pressure, EB will win. Kountze is going to be more athletic, but EB is very fundamentally sound on both ends. It's going to come down to how they handle Kountze's and how many easy baskets Kountze can get. If it turns into a half court game, Kountze won't beat them.

This is the recipe for beating kountze. If a team is fundamentally sound, can break the press, and defend the 3 ball, they can beat Kountze. You don't need a team of superstars or some magical formula to beat them, you just have to handle the pressure and not turn the ball over. Problem is that most teams can't handle the press consistently for 4 quarters. Best of luck to Kountze.

Man, I kept thinking about this post as I was watching Newton make their 4th quarter run last night. It was almost like they couldn't miss.

lol I told ya. It was the most unbelievable thing I had ever seen. I have never seen a team shoot that well at any level, high school, college, or pros. And it was crazy cause I literally don't think they hit a single 3 in warm ups. Game time shooters I guess lol

  19. 17 minutes ago, About a week ago said:

Last post about this, sorry Kountze-Newton. LaMarque's enrollment had steadily dwindled as it looked like the school was going to shut down. Enrollment for the current alignment was posted before Texas City ISD, officially took over LaMarque HS. Also, a private school in LaMarque closed following last school year which added approximately 100 students. This is from a LaMarque source.

It sucks when stuff like this happens. Tough break for Buna, and possibly all of region 3.

Now back to Kountze vs. Newton! lol
