  1. groves very weak ? they won last night against your prediction fhws Groves defeated FHWS 5-4 in 9 innings.
  2. The main problem with the Groves game was walks. I believe 11 of their runs were directly related to walks. If we keep those under control, we should be okay. The defense was sound when they put the ball in play, but we struggled defending the walks. Kameron will be pitching against Nederland again and hopefully he will be on. If he is, we do have a slight chance against them.
  3. FHWS hit the ball solid again last night. I don't think it was a true testament of how good we are. PN was missing three players and struggled on defense and on the mound. It will be nice to have a shot at revenge on Nederland. They are a very good team and it should be a good game.
  4. Pretty tough? After witnessing them the other night, this team is full of hosses. Not only are they big, they are also agile. They had good pitching and solid defense and the bats were overflowing with power. Pound for pound, the 2nd baseman Ramoin may be the biggest stud on the team. When he walked out for warm ups, you could tell you were looking at a player with talent and confidence. I was very impressed. It will take a Herculean effort to defeat this team.
  5. It's not raining now. Rained solid for about 45 minutes. Gave us a good soaker. Radar looks like it is over now.
  6. Yes, he was the pitcher for FHWS. You are right. These kids do swing good bats. The Nederland kid kept them off balance. He did a great job. Hopefully we will hit to our capabilities against Groves.
  7. Pitching and defense were solid for us. However, we never thought offense would be our problem. We are going to have to pick up the sticks if FHWS wants to compete. There are some tough teams out there we are going to have to face.

  9. In all of my years of being involved with Little League, very rarely do the best 12 make the All Star team. That angers some people when you say that but it is a fact. I have nothing to do with BCLL and have no dog in that fight. So don't let the this upset the people of BC. I am not talking specifically about them. On just about every team in every league, there are kids that the parents, the other players and usually the AllStar coaches know don't deserve to be on the team. It has always been that way and it always will. That is why the teams from the larger cities usually represent at Williamsport. Their weakest player who has to play their one inning is lot stronger than the coach's son who was put on the team through the good-ol-boy network.
  10. WHY KIDS PLAY SPORTS: To Have Fun To improve their skills To be with friends To do something they're good at For the excitement of competition To become physically fit To be part of a team For the challenge of competition To learn new skills To succeed or win The number one reason children play youth sports is because they enjoy playing games that are fun. Parents and coaches should ask themselves, "Why are children involved in sports and are they having fun." Sparky Anderson, a former major league baseball manager, wrote, "We're asking kids to compete to win. Why not ask them to compete to have fun?" The primary goal of youth sports should not be to form a winning team. It should be to create an atmosphere that is fun, child-centered, and develops the skills of all the participants. Developing new skills motivates children or enhances previously learned ones. Furthermore, a child experiencing a positive performance or receiving constructive feedback will also lead to continued participation. If the child perceives the event to be positive, they will be motivated to try harder. Greater effort leads to advancements in skills. Everyone enjoys winning but most children focus more on performing the activity instead of who won or lost. Success should be measured in terms of personal growth and development not by who won the contest. The majority of children would rather play on a bad team than sit the bench for a good one. Winning and receiving awards are of secondary importance to children and should not be heavily emphasized. Children love to play and have fun and that is what youth sports should focus on. WHY KIDS QUIT SPORTS : Overemphasis on winning Lost Interest Not having fun Time consuming Coach was a poor teacher Too much pressure Tired of playing Need more study time Coaches play favorites The Sport was boring Over 35% of the millions of children who play youth sports quit after the first year of competition. 85% of the children who continue to play dropped out of organized sports all together between the ages of 10 and 17. Why are children quitting youth sports? The primary reason is that children are not having FUN. Additional causes for children to quit sports include an overemphasis on winning by the parents and/or the coaches. The coach or parent yelled at the child for making a mistake. The verbal abuse associated with winning at all costs caused feelings of self-doubt. The child perceived that his or her abilities were not good enough too play so they quit. This perceived lack of ability creates low intrinsic motivation within the child. Their competitive flame was extinguished and consequently the child began to use excuses for not wanting to play like: I lost interest, it's not fun anymore, it's too time consuming, or I'm tired of playing. Coaches and parents compound these problems by singling out players for excellent play with extrinsic rewards: most valuable player, all-star teams, best pitcher, etc. This degrades the average and below average players, plus adds competitive stress to the athlete who received the award. Children quit sports because winning is not everything to them, having fun is, and when the game is not fun, they lose interest. Getting children interested again after they quit can be very difficult. PLAYER'S ROLE: Players who quit sports would consider re-joining a team if the following were implemented: GIRLS Practices were more fun There was no conflict with studies Coaches understood players better There was no conflict with social life I could play more Coaches were better teachers BOYS Practices were more fun I could play more Coaches understood players better There was no conflict with studies Coaches were better teachers There was no conflict with social life WHAT KIDS WANT FROM PARTICIPATION: To have fun To learn new skills To be with friends and make new ones Excitement To succeed or win To exercise and become physically fit It is important that athletes are comfortable in the activities that they participate in. Fear of failure or ridicule can destroy a child's self-esteem. By participating, players improve on previously learned skills or learn new ones that will enhance their self-satisfaction. Plus, the rush of adrenaline associated with competition can spark new emotions in a player thus elevating their performance to previously unknown levels. Being involved in youth sports can also be a great atmosphere to foster social interaction and to meet new friends. Sports participation allows for physical activity and exercise in a manner that players embrace rather than dread. All players should have the same rights when it comes to participation. These Bill of Rights are a listing of how players should be treated. Player's Bill of Rights The right to participate in sports regardless of ability level. The right to participate at a level commensurate to a child's developmental level. The right to have qualified adult leadership. The right to participate in a safe and healthy environment. The right for children to be leaders and decision makers. The right to play as a child and not as an adult. The right to proper preparation for participation in sports. The right to equal opportunity to strive for success. The right to be treated with dignity by all involved. And, the right to have Fun.
  11. The last I heard was she would be coaching volleyball at Vidor. She doesn't want to coach against her daughter who will be a senior at HF. Also, she doesn't want to take another basketball job so she can go watch her play.
  12. Don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel. LOL!
  13. Jeff Keener, who used to coach @ HF, moved over from Hitchcock to coach boys basketball and Kirk hall moved from Barbers Hill to coach softball.
  14. I don't think there will be much bashing. High school was much more "fun" to watch and participate in. Select is much more intense. We had a girl from our high school team come to one practice. She said she would not be back. It was no fun and we worked way too hard. I believe they both serve their purpose, but their purposes are different. Both are relevant and even though they are, should never be considered in competition with each other.
  15. Has anyone ever thought that maybe it wasn't just bad attitude? I know of a teenager that would fly into rages with the first hint of unorder or tension. They were diagnosed with a chemical embalance and after treating the situation, the kid now has control of their emotions. Just a thought.
  16. Went to the HF Athletic banquet last night. They actually gave out awards for that sport. It was embarrassing.
  17. Looks like 18-3A and 21-3A are definitely the two toughest districts in our region with all three of their playoff teams still in it.
  18. Jeff Keener at Hitchcock went to the new school in Baytown.
  19. This is how I expected the bats to be. With the pitching doing better than anticipated, they may make this year fun to watch.
  20. The latest rumor, and this is only rumor, is that last year's boys varsity coach will be taking over the girls' program.
  21. FIRST - THERE IS NO HIDDEN MEANING TO THIS REPLY, SO DON'T GO THERE Very good post, but in my opinion (with a few exceptions ie Cheater, Champ, BG - this is a NON-inclusive list) it is the HS coaches who don't want to get along - As parents and select coaches, we would do ANYTHING we could to help the girls succeed, and sometimes that means "NOTHING". There are 2 problems, though: Parents can't relinquish control, and let the HS coach do their job (some) HS coaches feel VERY threatened by us, and the evil plague germs we carry, therefore they cannot talk to us, make eye contact with us, discuss games or strategies or skills, opponent talent and tendencies Neither of these lead to healthy relationships between the 2 parties. I have no problem letting go and letting a coach do the job (s)he is paid to do. I have no problem with playing time or position. I have learned to "let go", because HS has ZERO bearing on what I do the other 8 months of the year. I DO have a problem with paid professionals who DO NOT try to "grow" our kids into better people by their actions and words and deeds. Yes, I want HS to win, but in the end, there is no scholarship at the end of the HS season - Only school spirit, a letter jacket and patch. Both very good posts. That is why Champion, Cheater and BG (and I am sure a few left out) are so respected on this board. They understand what the select programs do to improve their programs. For the ladies who play for these type of coaches, be very appreciative of what you have. Believe me, playing for a coach who is anti-select can be very stressful.
