  1. Did Coach Mangan speak at the HF athletic banquet? If so, what did he say and what did the parents and students think about him?
  2. The athletes and fans at H-F will give Coach Mangan a fair chance. From what I hear, he has a great personality, hard-working, and really cares about the students. I'm not sure what happened at Kemp, but he coached several sports for many years at Brenham and was very successful. A new coach always brings some uncertainty and doubt, but he also will bring excitement and enthusiasm with a fresh start and new ideas. Any H-F athletes who may have dropped out for whatever reason will certainly get a second chance. Good Luck and Best Wishes to Coach Walt Mangan and the H-F Longhorns!!!
  3. He has a ring for girls softball at Brenham, '95 or '96.
  4. I've read posts that if they UIL approves this plan, only two teams from each district would advance to the playoffs. Why not 4 teams? Currently there are 32 districts and two teams advance in the small division and 1 in the large division (2 for 5A). So that is a total of 64 small division teams in the playoffs (32 districts X 2 teams). Under this new plan there will be 16 districts so why wouldn't 4 teams be in the playoffs (16 X 4 = 64). The UIL wants more teams in the playoffs not less, because they get 15% off the top of the gate receipts from playoff games. I would be very surprised if the UIL reduces the number of playoff games. Also in reviewing some of the projections of new district alignments and the travel, it seems many of the schools are already playing schools from ajoining districts in non-district games or scrimmages so I don't know that travel will be a big issue especially in this area.
  5. What about individual sports like cross country, tennis, golf and track? Will home school kids be able to compete in UIL districts? Imagine nationally ranked tennis players, with their own coaches, who are home schooled competing for district and state titles. I don't know how the UIL can leave out home schooled kids if their parents fill out the proper paper work.
  6. This will have a big impact on Texas high school basketball. Recently HBO Real Sports did an investigation into these so called basketball academies. Most of them are funded by sports agents or shoe companies. Not only do they recruit from all over the US but overseas as well. The show explained that the "curriculum" is like a home school learn at your own pace. They travel all over the country to play games and tournaments. Most of the players sign scholarships with D-1 colleges in hopes of then jumping to the NBA. The UIL will have fun with these.
  7. Blade doesn't know the facts so he/she makes up his/her own, I guess. Walker resigned around March 20th. The administration posted the job on March 27th. [Hidden Content] They left the application deadline open for about three weeks and I heard that they got around 60 applications. The administration whittled it down to about 10 guys and they brought them in for interviews the week of April 23rd. The administration is bringing two out of the ten for the school board to interview on Tuesday night. The names I heard are Stewart from Luling and Mangan from Kemp. If the school board meets this weekend, Blade should file a complaint with the Jefferson DA's office because they didn't call a meeting for this weekend. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday May 8th at 6:30 according to the agenda on the adm. building. Blade might be smoking some those strange plants that grow up in the "Ricefields."
