Crosby v. Vidor (Stallworth 7pm 11/10)
Cougar14.2 replied to Cougtalk's topic in High School Football
Here's another fact check for a team that doesn't run the slot-t as well as Vidor's jv. Yeah, they were 6-5 when we played them just like Crosby was 6-5 after losing to Vidor in 2011. PLC's playoff record for the last decade under Richard Whitaker starting in 2015 going backward: 1st round, 2nd round, semis, 2nd round, 3rd round, 3rd round, 4th round, 3rd round, 2nd round and 2nd round. Vidor has one first round win in 54 years. Did you honestly compare them to Vidor's jv on a public forum? Post like that are why people stareotype SETX and why someone like me would be seen as belittling a town for posting those stats. If Vidor was in a district with Angleton who blew them out to last meeting, state champion George Ranch and top ten ranked Foster they would've finished .500 too. Judging from how many games you said you've watched you ain't seen bad either. -
Here is New Caney's Maxpreps page. I don't really think you can call the o-line suspect, Crosby's front is pretty decent. Qb and rb both have over 1,000 yards rushing behind that o-line: [Hidden Content]-(new-caney,tx)/football/stats.htm

I think every Crosby fan I talked to agrees with what you said verbatim. As a fan of a team whose head coach averages 10 wins per season all I can do is watch and hope we keep winning. I do think New Caney is probably better than any team we'll play at the D2 level until a possible third round game with Georgetown though.
-
Makes me kind of wonder after missing the season finale against BH if he's not done for the year? I think PAM blows them out either way but you can never sleep on a Jim Holley coached team, he always seems to have something in these situations.

New Caney's defense is pretty good. They shut our offense out in the second half but I'm sure our 100 yards in penalties helped. Central is playing with such a thin margin of error it's hard to see where they have advantages X's and O's wise. I think they give up 21 to New Caney on scheme alone. Question is how many more do they give up from Marte Allison and Jordan Cooper making individual plays? I see Central gave up 100+ rushing yards and three tds to PNG's qb. New Caney's qb Cooper is a heavier, more physical runner who's very hard to contain off the read-option fakes. I would compare New Caney to PNG with a slightly less potent passing game but a more physical run game and better defense.

If Vidor can double the number of rushing tds they deserve to win. Playoffs are about coaching and matchups though. I think Crosby puts on a defensive clinic against the slot-t. Despite what Vidor fans may think Port Lavaca Calhoun runs the slot-t better than any 5A team in the state, you can check their resume and verify that. PLC was in a district with Foster, Angleton and George Ranch and had played all of them relatively close running the slot-t. The only offensive TD they ended up scoring was on Crosby was a long pass late in the game against the backups. We didn't have an assignment lapse the whole contest in the run game. Similar personnel to what we had then if not better, defense is also heating up like it was at that point in the season. -

For whatever reason the Chronicle isn't keeping the box scores like normal this year. It's hard to say but I do know after playing Manvel, Heights and BH the starters had only given up 1 rushing TD in the first three games. I would say starters have given up 6 or 7 rushing tds on the year without having completes stats to check. -

Objective as in shoot from the hip instead of do reaearch and use data you find? Believe it or not you just don't win games because "We play hard" or "We hit people in the mouth". I choose not to look at the game that simplistically. Every poster on here can come up with your standard "Should be a good game between two good teams" post. Vidor likes to run it, Crosby likes to stop it. We'll see how those statistics work out Thursday in Baytown. -

Dang, you don't think Tay'lor Perry and Johnny Harper are physical? They've been sending players to the sideline all year. I think Gray-Brooks is pretty salty too. Maybe the other kid isn't as physical but he had a game stopping hit against Humble where I'm not sure if the player came back in and he probably had the hardest hit of the game against New Caney that made it 3rd and 5 I believe. I would also throw Alec Lewis in there who probably leads the district in sacks from the rover position. I thought pass coverage was where we struggled in games like Dayton and Porter where we gave up multiple tds through the air. -

Belittle your town? If I'm not mistaken it was someone from Vidor who said something about trailers. I want you to go all the way back to threads at the beginning on the year and see how many times someone makes inferences about Crosby before I ever say anything. People that get sensitive or are really bothered by things are usually because those things are true. For instance, Rob's trailer comment is probably laughable to most Crosby people and got blown over but if I were to say that to someone from Vidor they would feel like you're trying to stereotype them. Me not praising their football team has nothing to do with belittling a town. Stop being so sensitive dude. Hope for an injury free game too, maybe Craig Willimas even plays in this one. -
Funny this game is at their home stadium because Humble is the exact team I would compare Central to in 22-5A. Similar enrollment, similar athletes and according to some fans similarly odd coaching at times. New Caney isn't going to go out there and beat themselves. They're very solid on defense, second best unit in the district behind Crosby's. Their bread and butter is the zone read with their qb and 200lb back that likes to get downhill on you. Qb and rb have over 2,000 combined rushing yards and qb is a pretty good passer. They also have a first team all-district receiver in #3 Eli Aiken. Also a familiar district stadium for New Caney versus traveling to Beaumont like last year against Ned. I think New Caney scores in the mid-30's and their defense holds Central in the mid to low 20's. Central has better athletes than NC but so does Humble, Centraljust has to get out of that playoff spot.

If we give away four fumbles we're probably going to lose to a lot of teams, not just Vidor. Last time we lost we gave away possessions and compounded it with 100 yards in penalties which scares me with this team. Another 10 penalty for 100 yards night for Crosby against New Caney. -

Port Lavaca fans were saying the same thing about Crosby not being physical enough or not being able to play assignment football against their slot-t. They ended up with 7 offensive points after making us drive all the way to San Antonio to play them. Assignment defense is night and day from what it was then. Matchup wise if you want to play in a phone booth like Vidor does, that's actually playing to Crosby's defensive strengths. I also think the way our o-line has come together we'll be able to line up and run the ball very effectively ourselves. Grace had over 100 yards to Allison's 24. I just think in the end Vidor gets out-physicaled trying to out-physical Crosby. -

Just like Jayhawk pointed out, playoff games are about matchups. Vidor is an all-run squad and Crosby specializes in playing run defense. Vidor got four extra possessions on lost fumbles, another extra possession on an onside kick recovery yet were only up three points halfway through the fourth. If we can stay away from the turnovers and personal fouls I think you might see this defense put together a performance like they did against Port Lavaca's slot-t a couple of years ago. -

We'll see. You been licking all over Marte Allison all year saying stuff like "I think he's on of the best backs in Texas". Well, he had 17 carries for 24 yards last night. Crosby did a lot of hitting themselves. -

Who is everyone? I don't really see anybody on this side of the river relaying that sentiment. I personally think we go 3-1. -

Huh? You mean to tell me after being down 21-0 and coming back they chose to do an onside kick when their defense had only allowed 3 points in the second half? I guess I have to read the whole thread now. -
Probably equivalent to the difference between North Shore and Fort Bend Marshall. I think they win their first round game by double digits but I think y'all beat them by several scores. They're well coached and are capable of putting points up if you have lapses though. It's so hard to run the ball on y'all I just can't see anybody challenging until Cedar Park who has the defense to somewhat slow the offense down.

Box score, looks like four lost fumbles killed PAM: [Hidden Content] -
Box score from the game. Not sure how accurate they are, have seen two different numbers already but pretty similar: [Hidden Content]

Like I said, good win tonight for you boys. I can sense your excitement. I think you're going to walk out of Stallworh stadium knowing you definitely weren't on the field with BH, PNG or PAM. After Vidor's win tonight I expect the Pirates to give Crosby everything they can handle. I also think when Crosby puts it all together there aren't many in D2 I believe can beat us. I do believe this game would possibly be tougher than the 2nd round game though. I can respect that Crosby would have an 8 consecutive year bi-district winning streak if it wasn't broken up by Vidor in 2011. All I can tell you is this ain't Flannigan's Crosby. -
Crazy for two teams averaging 40+ in district play to have a defensive struggle. I bought both teams got tight after Crosby had the pick 6. New Caney kept it alive with the TD catch Aiken had on 4th and 10 between two Crosby defenders. Good defense but better offense in that situation. I thought Cooper was kind of shocked by he defensive speed from Crosby and thankfully didn't get adjusted until the fourth quarter where he put together several good runs. Defense was pretty much lights out last week but I think we played better this week even though we gave up one more TD. 17 carries for 24 yards by Allison is a statement by the Crosby defense. I think y'all go out and beat Central pretty comfortably, they have similar athletes but won't be as well coached as Crosby. I actually think y'all can win the game with your defensive unit alone.

Yes, got too excited. Georgetown beat Conally tonight.

Well Crosby, we get a home game. Defense plays like it has the past couple of games and I think we handle business. Crosby has to control their personal fouls in this game though, nothing having a team in a punting situation and giving them a first down to continue a drive. A revenge game might not be the right name for it sbut nice it's completely different characters but this one is going to feel good. -
Like what I saw from Crosby on the defensive side of the ball tonight, with Cedar Park going D2 I think it's regional final quality like we predicting going into the season. Two crucial fourth down stops and the district's leading rusher Marte Allison was basically shut out of the game. We have a few kids that are just flat out matchup problems for opposing offenses, weak spots from earlier in the year have elevated their play. What I didn't like was that we had three personal fouls. Two drive killing penalties, one where we went from first down to 4th and 25. We were shut out offensively in the second half, New Caney played great defense but despite the o-line getting decent movement we couldn't sustain drives. We shouldn't have had any problem at least reaching the mid-30's scoring wise tonight. Overall I thought it was a very Code Red performance. Never trailed in the game, made more plays than the opposing team when it was tight and made a couple of plays when it was time to close the show. Great job by New Caney and a great job by Coach Riordan picking up his 50th career head coaching win in his 5th season at Crosby. Good night all the way around for Code Red.
