    NATIONAL VINYL RECORD DAY
The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Monkees.  Does the mention of these musicians make you picture a round black record?  A vinyl record? The vintage vinyl is almost as much of a classic as the bands themselves.
These vinyl records are commemorated annually on August 12.  Vinyl records are also known as a gramophone record, phonograph record or a record.  It is an analog sound storage medium consisting of a flat disc which has an inscribed, modulated spiral groove.
Juke Box at Wax Trax Records in Las Vegas loaded with 45s.
Vinyl records are referred to based on rotational speed  The RPM’s, or revolutions per minute of the more popular vinyls are:
    45s
    33 1/3
    78s
Other features of vinyl records included reproductive accuracy or “fidelity” (High Fidelity or Hi-Fi, Orthophonic and Full-Range), their time capacity (long playing or single), and the number of channels of audio provided (mono, stereo or quadraphonic).
     Ohhh the good ole days..

    NATIONAL LAZY DAY
Today there will not be much information regarding this annually celebrated holiday as we do not feel like doing any research. Actually, we do not feel like doing anything at all.  So we are in our hammocks with a couple of good books and glasses of lemonade and iced tea.  Yes, it is National Lazy Day, and we choose to be lazy rather than tell you that this holiday is observed each year on August 10th.

Look, I've never written for a paper or anything, but I've spent a fair amount of my adult life performing research, conducting interviews, and drafting documents related to those two items.  If it were me, I'd start with the broad picture.  Pick out 3 or 4 school from 5A, 4A, and 3A in the area and try and get the HC or AD on the phone to talk about the athletic programs in general.  I'd inquire about participation in each sport, up's, down's, remaining constant, whatever the case may be.  I'd then compare it to what we are seeing on a national level.  Why are we seeing a different trend then what is seen nationally?
I imagine that once the season starts and rosters come out, you will be able to see if there were any underclassmen from last year that aren't on rosters this year.  Maybe you could figure out a way to contact those individuals.  Of course, kids that play at the varsity level tend to stick with it through high school, but you might get lucky.  As mentioned by others on the board, my guess is that a lot of the kids that give up football are steered in a different direction at the freshmen/sophomore level by being one-sport athletes (at least for SETX).
But maybe you'll find those kids that moved on to other things and if so, run the article during the season while everyone is focused on football.   Of course, such an article run during the season might draw the ire of folks on this board (depending on the slant), but hey, it starts a conversation right?

While I agree that the timing of Danny's request, given the annual excitement about the return to practice for the 2017, may not have been the greatest in the world, he at least deserves the benefit of the doubt for attempting some research into the issue before taking to print on based on numbers and incidents having nothing to do with the area.  As I told Danny, I don't know, and quite frankly I doubt, that he will get what he is looking for here as most, if not all, who frequent this forum are pretty heavily invested in their school's programs so this is not the place where he is likely to find someone who has decided to leave a football program.
But I have been wrong before and perhaps he will find someone who can flesh out a potential story of this issue. It is nothing new for a Enterprise sports reporters to seek out folks here who can give an insight to a story idea as Danny's former colleague, David Thompson, fished here on a regular basis.  And there are times that such forays did provide the needed flesh for some of those stories.
I'll be looking to see what you can find, Danny.

    NATIONAL BOOK LOVERS DAY
Observed each year on August 9, (and sometimes on the first Saturday in November) bibliophiles get to celebrate on National Book Lovers Day! A day for all those who love to read, National Book Lovers Day encourages you to find your favorite reading place, a good book (whether it be fiction or non-fiction) and read the day away.
Bibliophile – a person who has a great appreciation for or collects books.
Let’s step back in time for a minute:
The very first books used parchment or vellum (calf skin) for the book pages.
The book covers were made of wood and often covered with leather.
The books were fitted with clasps or straps.
Public libraries appeared in the Middle Ages.
Books in public libraries were often chained to a bookshelf or a desk to prevent theft.
    Moving forward:
Book manufacturing’s recent development included digital printing.  Book pages are printed using toner rather than ink.  Digital printing opens up the possibility of print-on-demand,  where no books are printed until after an order is received from a customer.
E-books are rapidly increasing in popularity.  E-book (electronic book) refers to a book-length publication in digital form.  They are usually available through the internet. However, can also be found on CD-ROM and other forms.  E-books are read either by computer or via a portable book display device known as an e-book reader, such as a Reader, Nook or Kindle.

    PURPLE HEART DAY
During the American Revolutionary War, the Badge for Military Merit decorated six known soldiers. Purple Heart Day on August 7 commemorates the creation of the oldest American military decoration for military merit, the Purple Heart and honors the men and women who are of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
Created by General George Washington in 1782 to be presented to soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action”, the decoration was a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk bound with a thin edge of silver and the word Merit embroidered in silver across the face.
It is unknown who designed the Badge of Merit. It is also unknown how many soldiers may have received the honor symbolizing the courage and devotion of an American Patriot. According to The Badge of Military Merit by Professor Ray Raymond, The “Book of Merit” where the names of possible recipients and their deeds were recorded has long been missing. According to the Badge of Military Merit by Professor Ray Raymond,
Until Washington’s 200th birthday, the Purple Heart remained a Revolutionary War footnote. Through the efforts of General Douglas MacArthur, the U.S. War Department created the Order of the Purple Heart. Today the medal bears a bust of George Washington and his coat of arms.

    NATIONAL ROOT BEER FLOAT DAY
On August 6, float a scoop of vanilla ice cream in an ice cold mug of frothy root beer.  It’s National Root Beer Float Day!
Also known as the “Black Cow,” the root beer float got its start in Colorado in a mining camp. Frank J. Wisner of Cripple Creek, Colorado, gets the credit for inventing the “Black Cow”  way back in August of 1893.
One night Wisner, owner of the Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company, was staring out the window and thinking about the line of soda waters he was producing for the citizens of Cripple Creek when he came upon an idea.  The full moon that night shined on the snow-capped Cow Mountain and reminded him of a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  He hurried back to his bar and scooped a spoonful of ice cream into the children’s favorite flavor of soda, Myers Avenue Red Root Beer. After trying, he liked it and served it the very next day.  It was an immediate hit.

    NATIONAL UNDERWEAR DAY
National Underwear Day is observed annually on August 5th.  If you’re like many Americans, your mother warned you to always wear clean underwear, because you never know when you will be in an accident! Although there are probably better reasons to wear fresh underwear, this is the one that most often comes to mind.
Underwear is the layer of clothing worn closest to the body and under the outer clothing.  It protects clothing from sweat and provides the wearer protections from cold and chafing.  Underwear also provides support and shapes a body. Fabrics allow underwear to be designed for specific climates and sports.  They are designed for both modesty and to look alluring.

    NATIONAL GEORGIA DAY
The 13th colony and the 4th state to enter the Union, National Georgia Day recognizes the natural wonders and immense complexities of this bastion of Southern culture.
Georgia’s founder, James Oglethorpe, settled the colony’s first capital, Savannah. Georgia would go on to have four more capitals, Augusta, Louisville, Milledgeville and finally, Atlanta
Politically and socially, a divide has always seemed to exist. Considering it was initially established as a barrier of fortification between South Carolina’s southern border and Spanish settled Florida, perhaps Georgia lived up to destiny.
Of the 13 original colonies, Georgia was the only one that prohibited slavery officially in 1735. The prohibition lasted only 15 years. Leading up the Revolution, Georgia leaned toward supporting the crown and was the only colony not in attendance at the First Continental Congress.
During the Second Continental Congress, Georgia initially sent one delegate, Lyman Hall. However, Hall didn’t vote because he only represented a single parish in Georgia. The colony later sent Button Gwinnett and George Walton as official delegates. All three signed the Declaration of Independence.
Wars were destructive for Georgia. Her people and the economy suffered, and the resistance to social change persisted.
During the 20th century, industrial and technological advancements found a niche in Georgia’s economy. A hub for airlines, military bases and international corporations, Georgia rebounded once more.
The Georgia’s history is fertile for inspiration. Alongside the peach orchards and cotton fields surge crops of masterful artists, musicians, writers and poets. Their experiences with the beauty, history and humanity of Georgia fill the eyes and ears with more than can be appreciated in one visit.

    NATIONAL ICE CREAM SANDWICH DAY
Observed each year on August 2, it is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day.  This food holiday is one that will refresh each one of us on a warm summer day with a delicious frozen ice cream sandwich.
The original ice cream sandwich sold for a penny in 1900 from a pushcart in the Bowery neighborhood of New York.  The vendor, who was never identified in the article printed in papers across the nation, sandwiched the ice cream between milk biscuits. Soon, push carts popped up around the city and country during the summer months selling the portable treats.
The modern version of the ice cream sandwich was invented by Jerry Newberg in 1945 when he was selling ice cream at Forbes Field.   There are pictures from the early 1900s, “On the beach, Atlantic City”, that show Ice Cream Sandwiches were popular and sold for 1 cent each.
There are alternatives to the classic ice cream sandwich using chocolate cookies, oatmeal cookies or a rice crispy wafer in place of the original chocolate one.
Ice cream sandwiches are known around the world by a variety of names including the Monaco Bar, Giant Sandwich, Maxibon, Cream Between, Vanilla Slice and many more.
