  1. Lady Dogs claim tough win over Orangefield By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND — By no means did Saturday night's 63-55 win over Orangefield come easy, but the Nederland Lady Bulldogs frustrated the Lady Bobcats just enough to keep the NHS Lady Bulldog Classic championship trophy at home this year. Nederland, which improved to 4-3 on the season, beat Kelly 62-53 earlier in the day to get to the championship. Meanwhile, Orangefield defeated Huffman to advance to the title game. The Lady Dogs took advantage of their trips to the free throw line by shooting 21-of-34. Nederland also forced the Lady Bobcats into 26 turnovers including nine in the first quarter where the Lady Dogs built an 18-7 advantage. Orangefield would come storming back, however, as the Lady Cats trimmed Nederland's lead down to 35-34 by the third quarter, a period in which OF outscored the Lady Dogs 18-6. In fact, the Lady Bobcats opened the second half with a 9-1 run that was highlighted by a Ashton Wagner 3-pointer. After a Nederland trey from Savanah Desmarais, OF then closed the third frame with a 7-2 run and took a 43-40 lead into the fourth quarter. The night belonged to Nederland and Pheobe Falcon, however. Falcon answered immediately for Nederland with a 3-pointer to open the final period, knotting the score at 43-43. Falcon led all scorers with 25 points and hit three, treys on the night. Falcon also dropped in four from the charity stripe in the closing minutes. Buckets were swapped to make the score 47-46 in OF's favor with 6:02 remaining. That's when Nederland's Taylor Carlson, who had 15 points, nailed a three to give the Lady Dogs a 49-47 advantage. Nederland would not surrender that lead, as it went on to outscore the Lady Cats 14-8 for the remaining minutes. The real dagger for OF came when Nederland's Shaquirra Malveaux sank a 3-ball to push the Lady Dogs' lead to 57-49 with 2:57 left in the game. In all, Nederland outscored OF 23-12 in the fourth quarter to claim its first ever NHS Classic championship trophy under head coach Chris Smith, who said he was happy for his girls. "It was a real battle, a very phsycial contest," Smith said. "We're happy to be on the winning side and I'm really pleased with the way the girls fought tonight. They really stepped up and got over the hump tonight by getting this win, a big win against a great team. We need to keep getting better but it's important to come out on top in games like this." Desmarais contributed with 10 points for Nederland. Meanwhile, OF's top scorers were Allie Beach who dropped in 19, Wagner scored 11 and Marissa Wyatt had 10. OF dominated the boards, winning the battle by a 33-21 margin. The achillies for the Lady Bobcats, however, was the turnovers. Nederland, meanwhile, only committed 17 to OF's 26. In other results from the tournament, Kirbyville claimed the third place trophy by knocking off Bridge City 67-62 and then beat Jasper 50-42 in the consolation game. Bridge City, meanwhile went through West Orange-Stark with a 45-42 score. The Lady Cardinals then faced Kirbyville. The loss to the Lady Wildcats sent BC to the loser's bracket consolation game where it fell 96-24 to Hamshire-Fannett, which lost to Jasper earlier in the day. Read more >>
  2. 2008 All-Leader Volleyball Team Van Wade The Orange Leader It was a banner season for some local teams and local players during the 2008 high school volleyball season. There were big matches and big-time hearts shown throughout the campaign. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears strolled through District 20-4A and owned it. Long-time Lady Bear head coach Vicki Castino led LC-M to its first outright 20-4A crown since 2000. The Lady Bears cruised to a 13-1 20-4A mark and downed rival Port Neches-Groves twice in loop play. LC-M, led by junior sensation Christine Sicktich, finished with a stunning 27-9 record before falling to the Dayton Lady Broncos in the bidistrict round of the Class 4A Region III playoffs. The Orangefield Lady Bobcats proved their might under the guidance of first-year head coach Kristinn Holbrooks. Orangefield, led by the smooth hitting of Allie Beach and Aimee Scales, captured the third-place playoff position out of District 21-3A by downing rival Bridge City in a third-place play-in game after the two Orange County squads split in the regular district season. The Lady Bobcats (20-11) went on to topple the Liberty Lady Panthers in four games in the bidistrict round of the playoffs and then fell to 21-3A champion and rival Hamshire-Fannett in the Region III quarterfinals. The Lady Bobcats’ matches with Bridge City this season were packed with emotion, especially after Hurricane Ike ravaged parts of Orange County, especially Bridge City. The Lady Bobcats proudly helped their neighbors pick up the pieces, aiding the Lady Cardinals in cleaning out their Bridge City homes and providing much-needed inspiration. Orangefield also let the Lady Cardinals use Bobcat Gym for some practice sessions. So, without further ado, here is the 2008 All-Orange Leader Volleyball Team as selected by the Orange Leader sports staff: All-Leader Team MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Christine Sicktich, LC-M OFFENSIVE MVP: Allie Beach, Orangefield DEFENSIVE MVP: Shayna Sheppard, LC-M NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Sara McPherson, Bridge City COACH OF THE YEAR: Vicki Castino, LC-M FIRST TEAM Ashton LaVergne, LC-M Aimee Scales, Orangefield Emily Kosh, Bridge City Carly Gauthier, LC-M Olivia Wagner, Orangefield Alexa Humble, LC-M SECOND TEAM Mallory Guidry, Bridge City Maci Wilcox, LC-M Marcquishola Solomon, WO-S Brittany Wiegand, LC-M Sarah Armand, Bridge City Kaitlynn Henson, Orangefield
  3. Beaumont Enterprise Article Orangefield volleyball secures playoff spot by beating Bridge City By JOHNNIE WALTERS November, 1, 2008 Allie Beach took a couple of steps toward the net, jumped up and slammed down a monstrous kill between blockers in the middle of the court. The Orangefield outside hitter didn't waste any time once the ball was set to her as she quickly made her move for the final score of Game 3. The crowd erupted into celebration thereafter, as Beach's kill clinched the Bobcats first playoff berth since the 2004 season. Orangefield swept Bridge City 3-0 to claim the No. 3 playoff seed from District 21-3A on Saturday. Orangefield won 25-20, 25-23, 25-20 at Vidor High School. "I am really proud of the team," said Orangefield coach Kristinn Holbrooks. "They have really worked hard all season long for this." Orangefield and Bridge City finished tied for third place in the district. Hamshire-Fannett and Silsbee finished tied for first place in the same district. The Horns defeated Silsbee 3-0 on Friday to take the No. 1 playoff seed and a first-round bye. "It really was a great game," Holbrooks said. "I think our mentality of play got us through the three games. We constantly worked on our serves and hits in practice. When we served we wanted to serve aces. When we went for a hit we wanted to make sure it was a kill." Orangefield (18-10) plays Liberty on Tuesday in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs at Barbers Hill High School at a time to be determined. Silsbee plays Splendora in the same round at a time and location to be announced later. "This really is an exciting time for us," Holbrooks said. "It's been a long time coming for this program. The girls did it. We are headed to the playoffs." In Game 1, Orangefield jumped out to an 8-3 lead before Bridge City called for a timeout. Bridge City rallied back and went on a 13-10 run to come within an 18-16 deficit. But it would be as close as the score would get. The Bobcats outscored Bridge City 7-4 to win the first game 25-20. During the second game, the score tied five times before the Bobcats took a 12-9 lead. Bridge City rallied back to come within a 21-19 deficit. Then both teams traded points before Orangefield scored the final two points of the game to win 25-23. The score remained close in Game 3 until Orangefield made two consecutive kills to take a slim 11-8 lead. Orangefield was able to extend its lead to 14-8 before Bridge City outscored the Bobcats 5-1 to come within a 15-13 deficit. But the Bobcats held onto the lead. Led by Beach's two kills, Orangefield continued on a 10-7 run to win the final game, 25-20. Beach led the Bobcats with 16 kills. Aimee Scales had 10 kills. Olivia Wagner had 23 assists and eight digs. Morgan Taylor had eight digs. "We are excited about making the playoffs," Holbrooks said. "We are really looking forward to them."
