  1. Cardinal Backer you seem to have some deep seeded frustrations going on.  I don't understand that because I am sure you were one of those guys in school who was a jock - who had a coach that was like a father to you.   Some of your argument makes sense.  The community size and effort.  However, as someone with 4 family members who teach I think I should shed a little light on your thoughts.

First, teachers contracts are for a MINIMUM of 187 days, not 182.  That will cause some adjustment to your daily rate.  I do not know of a single teacher that works an 8:00 - 3:30 day.  In fact, at Bridge City the day officially starts at 7:45 and ends at 3:45.  That is unless there is a faculty meeting or a certification meeting that is held - mandatorily.  The teacher does not make overtime for the extra hour(s).  Nor does the teacher get paid to take home the papers/projects/assignments he or she has to grade.  Nor does the teacher get compensated for all of the paper and pencils they are required to provide for the Larry's and Joe's that will not bring one from home.  Teachers are not compensated for the time they MUST spend in summer conferences.

For a coach it is so much better! I know a coach who kept a log of his schedule during football season.  This is what that looks like...

Monday 7:00 staff meeting.  Football practice from 3:30 - 5:45.  Get kids out of the building and in cars to go home - watch the practice video - plan tomorrow practice.  Go home at 7:15.  (12 hours)

Tuesday (laundry day) 7:00 to put out the laundry for the team.  Same practice schedule -- (12 hours)

Wednesday - 7:45 school.  After planning tomorrow practice - stay and watch about 30 minutes of film for the next opponent. Go home - 8:00 average --  (12 hours)

Thursday - JV game day.  Arrive at 7:00 to pass out uniforms.  School.  Load busses etc...  play a game or two (9th and JV) back home - start the laundry, clean the locker room.  Go home about 9:30 average.  (14.5 hours)

Friday - GAME DAY -- 7:00 arrive (laundry and uniforms), Taping, Film Prep, Meetings, Travel ? - Game. After game duties - Game review with the staff, start laundry, load video into the computer- Go HOME - average 11:30. (17.5 hours)

Saturday - 7:00 arrive.  Grade film. Watch film with the team.  Exercise the team. Send them home and then watch 3 games worth of video of the next opponent.  Staff meeting to generalize game plan.  Go home - 3:00 (8 hours)

Sunday - arrive 2:00.  Game plan.  Authorize game plan as a staff - Go HOME - 6:30 (4.5 hours)

    So let's add that up ---  12 + 12 + 12 + 14.5 + 17.5 + 8 + 4.5 = 80.5 hours per week.

Here is the kicker!  Schools pay coaches for all of that time!  Take a look -- BISD football is $3500.  They do not pay the extra 10 days that are required to start in July.  So in BISD - an assistant football coach will make $3500/80.5 hrs per week X 12 weeks minimum.  That is 996 hours minimum for 3500 =  $3.51 per hour.   Wait $3.51 per hour???  For a part time job.  Spring ISD is thought to be one of the better paying stipend schools -- for football they $6500.  Assuming the same schedule --- The better paying schools pay $6.52/hour.  That should make you turn over in your sleep!

Oh yea - you don't get to choose your teacher?  Well, you can change school?  You can go to private school?  You can home school?  And these days -- you can tell your kid to act up in class and report the bad behavior of the teacher to the school board and they will re-assign the teacher.

Fact of the matter is - that all jobs matter.

Weren't "retread, proven loser" coaches that have been hired successful coordinators at one time?  Just because they got HC jobs where the gene pool is far inferior, or there is no structure to the JHs from a district standpoint, or the district gave less athletic time during the day because they lock kids up in double blocked Math/ English classes doesn't make them bad coaches.  They won big when they were coordinators with athletes, just like the guys your asking to hire, and they have experience running a program on top of that.  This is why they get hired.

You can't win without comparable numbers and some athletes... flat out.  Now, I've seen some guys that have been in places with athletes and all the advantages stated above screw it up.... Those are the coaches that don't get hired again!

Strong point Range.  However, you fail to think of one very strong point, which was mentioned earlier.  Most guys that get hired as HC, were hired because they knew someone, regardless of whether or not they were successful coordinators.  Having lived in the north Houston area for several years you will never be able to tell me that Aldine Nimitz does not have some talented kids.  The districts they have [played in over the past 10 years or so were not very strong and a coach that could relate to the kids and had a plan could be successful there.  You will not find that kind of athlete at Sterling.  So if he cannot win with really good athletes, how can he win without them?

After doing a little more research, I have been told this job was not even posted to the typical job boards that advertise jobs across the state of Texas.  Doesn't that speak to the idea that they were not looking for a great coach?  Are you going to tell me that a coordinator from Lake Travis would not be interested in making more money and being a head coach?  Or someone from Southlake, Cedar Park, West-Orange or any number of other programs?  I will never believe that argument.

    2014 B. Boyd 4-6-0

Out of all the Baytown schools I would choose Sterling, at least they are competitive at the 6A level.

The records above show a cumulative 30-86 record over the past 5 years and there does not seem to be any playoff records.  Maxpreps shows a career win/loss record of 7/43 for the AD (Dr. Mulvaney).  They say the apple does not fall far from the tree.  With the hiring of Mr. Toomer and his abysmal record it seems that GCC has again settled for less than mediocrity.  It does not make sense why GCC would continue to hire personal relationships of the AD, when the AD has never been associated with a winning program and obviously cannot lead the programs into the winners side of the slate.

To make matters even worse, where in the state of Texas ..  or maybe the entire USA do 2 different coaches, in two different schools, under ONE athletic director VOLUNTARILY resign in consecutive years.  I know probably 100 coaches that would give anything to be a head coach, but because AD's like Mulvaney hire the wrong guys, these other people never get a chance, and then get slapped in the face when those who do get the chance just walk away.

  4. Speaking of baseball.  The channel 6 sports lady, just had Coach Dubose on to talk about BC Baseball?  Did anyone else feel weird about that?  Chad Landry is the best baseball coach in the area and he is the reason BC continues to be so good in the sport.  But the former head football coach that just bolted because he said that he prayed about going back to HJ is the one on TV to talk about the current playoff run?

Speaking of the move.  In the first run at HJ, Dubose had arguably the most talented team HJ has had in many years and he won with them.  When the talent pool dried up in Sour Lake, he left for BC where he inherited the best talent that BC has had in several years and won with them.  Then, without that above average talent Coach Dubose and the Cardinals suffered through a sub-par season?  So is it now that HJ has some good talent again and Coach Dubose is going back to coach those good ones?   Is that what he meant when he said he prayed about the move?  Some divine intervention about the best stocked talent for him to coach?

I heard some talk the other day that Coach Stump is the only coach to have ever been to the playoffs four times at BC?  Where is he now?  Is he coming back to BC?

  5. Shoot, you can't even question a coach's performance on this board.  Definitely shouldn't boo him during the game when he calls a boneheaded play my 4th grader knows not to try on Madden. Never should you question his decision to have his only Qb in a spread offense fielding punts.

If the good coach didn't realize how important this particular game is, then I feel sorry for him. It's just life. I would be willing to bet that Charlie Strong wouldn't finish this season if he lost to Oklahoma a few weeks ago. When he signed up to coach at PNG, to play in that jewel of a facility, and to collect that big fat salary, he should have understood that beating Nederland was a condition of keeping the privilege of coaching the Indians.

To the good coach I say this. If you don't like it, there's always barber college.

WOW!  How do you really feel about it CB?  I am curious about what authroity has granted you the title of 'Bone-head' judge?  When was the last time you were on the sidelines making calls in a game that mattered?  It is one thing to have an expectation about an outcome, but it is totally a different thing when a 'bone-head' judge makes a bone-head statement.

  6. The Silsbee QB is the best in the area?  More so than the WOS QB?  The Ozen QB? The H-F QB?  I have seen all of them play and I cannot put the Silsbee guy above any of them.  He is very talented, no doubt, but to say he is the best is a stretch.  Local media goes where they have relationships.  The HJ coach has been on the Sports Extra at least twice in his 6 months here and they are not the best team around here.  How often has EC been on it this year?  They may be the best team in the area!

  7. Got my info from a person that was suppose to be "in the know" in regards to Hardin. Won't make that mistake again. ;)

It is just like any other business...  until and unless you have worked in a school system to see how things are done, you will never understand the politics that go on in something like this.  I got out of the school man years ago because of it.  This board (SETXSPORTS) Is for rumors and 'i hope this happens' believers.  Without knowing the underbelly of all of these moves is purely speculation.  I have no dog in this hunt, i do not know any of these people personally - but i am a fan of sports and of good stories.   I hate to know that somewhere along the way a great story gets interrupted by a personal agenda....  Coach Crayder was run out of town for a personal agenda.  So was Haynes.  I wish Coach Babin all the luck in the world, but I hate the way it went down and I think there are quite a few of you who also think that.

  8. I haven't heard of one important kid that is leaving due to Babin's hiring. The bottom line is that the kids loved Haynes and were upset when he was let go. That's totally normal and speaks to what a great man/coach he is/was. As to the board agenda drama posts, in my opinion, there was a chance to bring back a coach they think will be around for an extended period and do well to boot. There wasn't an agenda against Haynes as he had the team headed in the right direction. It was a timing issue. Haynes isn't going to coach forever. He's retired once already. He was paid. Also, I'm hearing Babin will get to carry a larger coaching staff while retaining some of last year's staff. Babin had a chance to advance his career and come home. It was a no brainer. Some of these posts should be in the National Enquirer.

this is the national enquirer -- isn't it?

  9. So - as a cardinal backer, you are telling someone NOT to play?  That sounds a little misleading.  How can you back a program when you are not supporting the efforts?  I am always amazed to read about the exploits of the little league teams.  I wonder - did you play Jasper/Newton and Kirbyville in those playoffs?  Were you playing as an 11-12 year old team against other 11-12 year olds?  I understand BC plays about 10 sophs on Friday nights.  That is 15-16 year old kids against 17-18 year old kids?  I know a little but about physiology and it seems to me like anyone would realize a 15 year old kid is not as strong or as skilled as a 17 year old kid?  How can you compare little league super bowls to varsity athletics?  You must have been the super coach on that team and lived out your dream of coaching?  Why not take that to BC and teach your knowledge to that program?  That would make you a cardinal backer?

  10. it seems to me that everyone is missing the point.  if the coach really told chargois about the problem, and I believe he probably did, and chargois chose not to say anything to the board members, which appears to be true, the only conclusion is that chargois knew how toxic the topic would be and chose not to say anything because he knew the board would never go for the hire in the first place.  this is not about media scrutiny - this is about a school official having knowledge about something that is apparently important to many people - and then choosing to take a road that would lead to all of this trouble.  it should be the credibility of the superintendent that is being questioned, not the coach - and not the media.

this has nothing to do with Kirbyville or hull-daisetta.  this is solely about a lack of leadership and a problem with credibility.

  11. they are still trying to get stowers back.  that is a school board members strong push.  they are begging him to come back, but the word is he is asking for more many than they can budget.  it fits perfectly with the totally secretive methods.  if word was out about how much money they are offering for a guy that stiffed the district once before and has not had success since -- it would cause a big problem.

  12. From my sources I hear the applicants are pretty much average coaches nothing for Ozen fans to get excited about.

    here is the skinny:

    Joe Bowser

    Bell Cobb

    Caleb Caeser

    Kevin Dotson

these were the four finalists.  the job was never posted as an 'official' opening.  that way they never had to give a list of applicants to the media when they asked.  it was done in secret, because there was an agenda in place  - can you believe BISD would be secretive about something?  the process was flawed from the beginning.  there will be a coach named tonight at the board meeting - so how do you name a coach, if there was never a posting and so, never a formal interview process?
