  1. Nothing wrong with supporting your team.Anyone that has been around high school basketball knows you don't punch your ticket to the drum in November or December. There will be a lot of evenly matched clubs in this region, the one that gets the breaks will go to Austin.
  2. I am saying there is a huge advantage to playing at home in the early game when the visiting team has to travel a long distance. This is a perfect example. If this game is played at a later start time I think you would see a much tighter ballgame. As far as Kirbyville I wasn't making excuses for them ,just stating a fact. They have been on the basketball court 2 weeks while Spurger has been on it 2 1/2 months.Just found it kind of odd they would schedule there ex coach on what most people would think would be the championship game instead of playing a traditional bracket and letting the best teams wind up in the championship game. This isn't a knock on any of the teams ,it's just my opinion on this type format.
  3. There is definitely a home court advantage to play in this format.Spurger will play D-ville in the first game at 10:30.The D-ville club will have to get up before daybreak to get to Spurger and play that early. You still can get the same amount of games with the old type brackets.I look at this tournament set up as a way to showcase a game with last years coach. If your gonna do that he should be given a chance to get a little practice in before his team plays in a game like this.Huge difference here in preperation time.
  4. If I read this bracket right the teams are already chosen to play at each round (with the team with the best record winning the tournament).I hate this format because you should have your best 2 teams playing in the final game ,if the brackets are set up correctly. In this tournament you should have Spurger/Deweyville in the final game because they are the 2 best clubs in it.I think Spurger will win it this year in a close game with Deweyville.I know it's hard to evaluate what teams will have when you extend invitations a year ahead of time but this field isn't anywhere close to what it was last year. Logansport/Brookeland was a very good ballgame in last years championship.
  5. These 2 clubs are virtually dead even.Deweyville won the first meeting but they know what it's like to play Spurger at home in their own tourney. On a neutral floor I would take D-ville but here I think Spurger will win it in a close one by 4. Spurger-56 Dville-52
  6. The last thing you want a real shooter to do is quit shooting the basketball.Brandon is very capable of beating the defense,he just doesn't finish when he gets to the rim.I have watched these kids for years and regardless of Codys percentages he is the most accurate option they have.If he's on and getting open looks(which will be a challenge from here on out)they have a shot at winning if not they will struggle to score.I heard a quote once from Larry Bird,he said anyone can go 0-10,it takes a real shooter to go 0-20.He was talking to Reggie Miller.Don't quit shooting the ball Cody,it's what you do best.Shooters have to get in a rythm and I think Cody shot it twice in the first quarter, that won't get it.Good luck next week guys in Woodville.
  7. Evadale will definitely be capable of beating Buna.Should be a real close ballgame, both clubs are pretty evenly matched. Both teams play hard which is a tribute to their coaching staffs when you look at their records.
  8. Where is Miller Grove? I thought I had been in every gym in southeast texas.
  9. Most teams in this area would give their ball bags (pun intended ;) ) to be 14-3.The Hawks are pretty much a lock to have a 20 win season.Damn I hate to see the program in such shambles ;D ;D ;D
  10. I didn't mean the officials cost Warren the game. Both clubs were over the limit in the first half.Just found it odd for a team to press an entire half and get called for 1 foul.Bottom line is Warren didn't shoot the ball well enough to win.For this group to win they have to get Andrews in the flow of the game early, tonight that didn't happen.
  11. Warren didn't shoot the ball well but I didn't see much defensive pressure by either club tonight.Evadale ran a token press and fell back in to a 1-3-1 for most of the game.Warren's guards got a lot of looks but couldn't convert. Can't comment on the foul shooting because Evadale was only called for 1 foul in the second half.Evadale won this game on the boards plain and simple. After their meeting earlier this year Warren took the night off and it cost them.
  12. Even though they lost last year in the playoffs they had the go to player that kept them in it until the very last second.Over the past several years all your good local clubs had 1 of those type players.O-field had Little,Lumberton had Pickering and Wilson,WOS had the 2 Brittany's,Silsbee had Green,HJ had Bernsen. All those clubs were ranked at one time or another and deservedly so.There just aren't alot of those type players in the area this year.I hope the girls prove me wrong,I like to see the local teams do well.
  13. That 1 game changing player is what makes good teams top 20 material.Orangefield was a top 20 team in the past because they had a solid team and a very good crunch time player in Little.Look at last years playoff loss as an example.I am a huge SETEX basketball fan but I'm also a realist and from what I've seen this year I think it's a strech to say we have that many top 20 teams in the area.A true top 20 team should expect to be in the regional tournament and I don't know how many qualifiers we will have this year. The reason I like Kountze is simple, they are sound at every position, have a good inside presence and a couple of girls who can light you up on any given night.Plus they have a very good coach.
  14. Spurger has a good shot but they got a real young club. They don't play football so they probably are at the top of their game while HD is still developing. It is extremely hard to beat HD at home so it will be interesting.
  15. I didn't see you mention Swinney who was probably the most athletic player on the floor.Last years group played against this press every day plus 3 thrown in to make it interesting. If all else fails they would pass the ball over a pretty small lineup.Gotta like their chances pressing this group with McBee,Swinney and Nash on the ball,Sims in the middle and Andrews back deep. Not sure about the 40 times(not many 4.6 40's in Warren) but from 1 end of the basketball court to the other last years group would more than hold their own,I've seen them all run it LOTS.I will give this years group credit, they are improving every time I watch them and they are playing hard on the defensive end.
  16. I haven't got to see them yet but I have seen the rest of the clubs in this district except Sabine Pass who they beat by 15 on a neutral floor.HD got a late start due to the football playoffs as did WH and Evadale. These 3 clubs probably will continue to improve over the next 2-3 weeks. The clubs that don't play football or did not make the playoffs are probably about to peak.I like the bobcats chances. The other 2 clubs who I think have a shot are Spurger and Sabine Pass.
  17. It is essential but a very bad idea before basketball practice.Weight training should be done on different days or after your work is done on the court.
  18. I've said this on many other threads.Coach Henry always has his clubs ready to play these kinds of games. He and the Bobcats should be the favorite to win that district.I still think Kountze and Anahuac split their regular season series and playoff for seeding at the end of the year. The Lions had Walker playing to far from the rim before he got hurt. When he gets back if they move him from the arc to about 12 ft in they will get noticeably better. They are down this year from the past years and probably won't make a deep run.The main reason is their size, the better ball control teams will beat them over the top and their half court game is not their strength.
  19. I'd love to know what you think about Orangefield and Brabers Hill too... I didn't mean to leave Orangefield or BH out of my reply. My observation is more about the validity of the poll than the teams that are in it.I haven't seen O-field or BH play this year but by looking at the records and the strength of schedule I would have to say they probably won't be in the top 20 teams in the state. There are some very good clubs in all classifications when you go statewide. To be a legitimate top 20 club you have to have the 1 dominate game changing player to go to when you need to win the big games at crunch time.I'm just not sure these clubs possess that type player. Are these some of the better teams in SETEX?You bet they are.Are they top 20 teams in the entire state?Probably not,at least in my opinion. You said you wanted the board to liven up a little, this should do it ;)
  20. No disrepect intended to any of the local clubs but I gotta question the validity of this pole.Looking at the strength of the clubs in past years and their rankings I would say Kountze probably is a top 20 team, other than that I think these folks are voting on reputation and hear say.Central has a good club as does Woodville and Evadale but probably not a top 20 club.I quess it's just opinions anyway until February.
  21. This question has 2 different answers. If you look at at top 10 teams statewide your 5-a clubs will just about always be stronger, simply because of the numbers.Locally it's a different animal.Year in and year out there are usually small school clubs around here that can compete with the West Brooks,Memorials and Centrals of the world.I gotta say this year the talent level seems to be down in just about every classification with the exception of Silsbee.I know it's definitely down on the small school side 1-a and 2-a.
  22. I didn't mean you didn't have a chnce against HD.I just meant I haven't gotten a chance to see them this year.I think HD,Spurger and SP could very easily be the playoff teams.
  23. Now that's a quote I can agree with.I don't have anything against the Sharks at all.In fact I think it's smart for them to play clubs like this because they won't see anyone this tough in district. My point was that if you score 16 points in the first half you probably aren't going to put yourself in a position to win against a good team.I think it's great the kids in SP are sticking up for each other and the club. After watching all the teams in this district except HD I gotta believe you have a great chance to make the playoffs.
  24. The coach at Deweyville does a good job with what he has to work with. It's tough to keep your focus when the other club is just plain better than you are as they were on this night. The bright spot for Deweyville this year is that they are probably the 3rd best team in the district and could easily make the playoffs.Leave the coach alone,he is trying to do something here that will help him in a game he has a chance to win.
