Immediately, when I read your comment, "But they play the games for a reason..." my thought went to the boy's side, not the girl's. More often than not, the dominate girls team is going to prevail. In my opinion, those underdog victories usually result from a coach knowing what he or she is doing. Also, my opinion, it's easier to coach up an underdog boys team, than it is a girls'. For example, boys' side, I'm likely to have an equally athletic player on my team that I can match-up with the opponent's best player. Girls' side, who am I going to select to keep up with Carter one-on-one?
I believe someone commented earlier about slowing the game down. That will help BH because the few games I've seen, they run out of gas in the 4th quarter. If BH is going to get past game 2 in the playoffs....will require better conditioning.
Yes, I agree PNG has a better shot than anyone else in the district, but the district is probably the weakest I've seen it in a long time.

I think you have to slow the game down.  Sprint back on defense and keep players in front of you, everyone else should have a foot in the lane....NO LAYUPS!!  Offensively you have to hit shots and dont be afraid to attack especially off of screens. Gotta make BH uncomfortable, they want more pace so you gotta take some of the air out of the ball lol.

I also think that it will be a 2 team race for the top spot between United and BH.  I think United will win this district tho, they will have more pieces while BH will probably have the best player with Carter even tho United's Anderson will also be in that discussion before its said and done.  I will take Crosby for the third spot based off of coaching, Coach Trotter will get that team going in the right direction.  Then the 4th spot will be a toss up.

IMO the thing to do would be to come together and sort out all ejections and techs, then if the situation or environment is still hostile clear the gym and finish the game with just players and coaches.

This team by far is the best team we played this year.  This program is starting to feed itself.  They have some special players but throughout the program you can see ALL the girls are understanding the system the coaches/parents have put in.  Fun to watch but not to Coach against.  It's going to take a special team to get them this year in 4A.

Great job tonight by the Lady Hawks! JV team remained undefeated on the season in convincing fashion and the Varsity had solid contributions from all 14 girls!
I really like what WOS has done to spruce up the gym! It looks great!

I think that summer basketball can be a blessing and a curse.  In this day and time IMO summer play or AAU is highly beneficial in the recruitment of players because colleges arent beating down doors of high schools looking for talent unless they have already evaluated the player during the viewing periods at a NCAA certified tournament.  But how a lot of AAU organizations do things is NOT beneficial.  A lot of people out here use summer basketball as a money grab or a way to chase clout by being able to say that they had such and such on their team.  Yes playing in front of scouts during the NCAA viewing periods is what you need to do, but those are only a couple of weekends in April May and few days in July.  Playing in 12 to 15 tournaments is excessive!  When you look at the number of games that these players are playing it is amazing!  They play anywhere between 30 to 40 games in a high school season then turn around and play up to 60 games during the summer thats 80 to 100 games played in less than a year with NO rest in between.  That is way to much and the results that it brings is injuries.  Then on top of all of these games you have certain media outlets telling you that you need to come to this "elite" camp so that you can be evaluated or ranked.  When you get there all it is is nothing but some "trainers" putting you through some drills then the players play up to 6 games in front of these basketball "gurus".  All this does is put even more miles on a players body.
Players must be able to get adequate rest!!  And honestly that is not being promoted by a lot all they tell you is that you have to be at this event or that event.  Honestly speaking tho AAU does provide the best way for a player to get exposure, but they must know that not EVERY team gets that exposure.  Just because the tournament flyer says that college scouts will be there doesnt mean that these scouts will be at courts to watch you play.  I think that both players and parents must do their homework before embarking on the path of playing in the summer on an AAU team.  Dont just fall for the hype of nice looking uniforms and team shoes!  Parents must also MAKE sure that their players get adequate rest.  What worked for me is making sure mine had weeks where she was not allowed to pick up a ball or even be in the gym.  Especially after that last viewing period in July I didnt let her touch a ball till school starts, she wasnt allowed to do anything but to be a kid lol.  Remember that YOU have ALL of the control over your player not that AAU guy.  Adequate rest and maintenance is essential for a player to get through the grinds of basketball and is very important for injury prevention.

You should come out and watch some games!  There are more half court offense teams in this area then you may think!  Now some teams do lack overall athleticism to just "pressure, steal, layup" but there definitely are some half court offenses being played.  Now what you dont see, is a lot of man to man defense in the area, only a handful of teams play it.  As far as being able to create their own shot, there are so many in the area, here is just a small list of some of them:
    Ashlon Jackson - HJ
    Delana Carter - Barbers Hill
    Kaden Morris - Lumberton
    Jayda Argumon - Woodville
    Jordyn Beatty - Woodville
    Asia Mitchell - Jasper
    Princess Anderson - United
    Cassie Chavez - Legacy
    Mollee Priddy - PNG
    Faith Fregia - Orangefield

I do also, thats why I am able to say that the ones who do make gyms available are greatly outnumbered by the ones who dont especially for girls in our area. Or they say its gonna be open gym but lets be honest.....it is primarily for the boys.  Then the girls have to "get in where they fit in" which in that case some will but most wont.

here is another thought to get some discussion on the original topic.  Shooters vs scorers.
Depends a little on the system they are in.   We are a pressure defense and dribble drive offensive team.  (if you can't dribble drive then your minutes are limited a little) We are trying to develop players that can drive, score, and shoot.     We have two players shooting about 30-35% from behind the line.  One has made 47 3's and the other has made 38 - (29 games) not sure how those numbers compare to the other "shooters" in the area but I know the opposing coach's yell "SHOOTER SHOOTER" every time one of them catches the ball... Lol

Our gym is available a lot during the off season for our girls and the past 3 years we have had great turnout in numbers of girls that access it.   There has been a direct correlation between this group putting in work in the off-season and having team success in the season.

Then HJ is most certainly doing it right. They are making all of the necessary deposits.  That's what I used to tell my kids growing up.. If you need a withdrawal later, deposit the time/effort now.

He states the point he was making was that their gym was accessible to their athletes, not that they have the model for us to copy.

I think this has turned into a great discussion on how to improve setx girls basketball in general.

Great observations on here with Coach Shu and many more.  Here as the WOS girls coach here is what I have observed.  Repetitions are key to any success in sports.  Since being assigned as the head coach here I make sure my gym stays open for my girls.  Unlike other programs we don't have a little dribblers program here yet and a lot of my girls can't afford AAU.  However, we utilized the UIL's new rule for skills training this past summer focusing on fundamentals and I have seen it pay off.
We're still behind on skill set but we make up some of this with our athleticism.  Girls are not like boys and besides the obvious here is what I mean.  A boy will watch basketball on tv or play the video game of 2K and then head outside trying the moves he just saw.  Girls rarely will even watch basketball on tv and if they do they rarely go outside to practice what they saw.  Now I know they're anomalies to this and few girls will do it.
The key to growing basketball in our small areas is through little dribblers but we have to still think outside the box.  It does us no good to run a little dribblers program where we have 2 teams that play each other every week or mix teams with boys/girls.  What we need to do is run little dribblers like we do pee-wee football.  For example West Orange Stark Little Dribblers plays Bridge City this week at all ages and one of the programs host the event.  Next week WOS may travel to LCM area and play their Little Dribblers program at LCM.  What this will do is a few things.  Number 1 make it where you build competition and make the community start paying attention on Saturday.  A lot of people would pay to go see these type of games on Saturdays which will fund the program.
It will also make parents aware of the competition that is out there and the work that needs to be done.  If this is done properly then a pipeline will be heading to the junior high.  My girls played Little Dribblers for years either on mixed teams (boys and girls) or playing against one all girls team where a parent stacked one team against the other team.  The mixed teams saw the girls getting  pushed to the side not  getting the development they need and the stacked team stroked a parents ego that really couldn't coach but because they had the stacked team looked like coach of the year.  In the end my girls left the sport for softball or volleyball which broke my heart being a basketball guy.  They saw it was a waste of time and enjoyed the organization of softball/volleyball more because it was more competitive.
In order for us to grow girls basketball for the whole area we have to change the process at the grass roots level.  If this is done then we will see more girls going off to play college ball from all the schools and not just a few handful.  We will also see shooting, ball handling and other skills grow.  Last statement, Martins Mills has basketball figured out.  I went there this past summer visiting a buddy who's daughter is a stud on the high school team and saw their process.  The Little Dribblers is ran like I mentioned above and ever kid has a pass-code to the gym and can go shoot anytime of day.  Kids put their code in flip on the lights and get to work.  Now I know we don't all live in a town like Martins Mill but my point is their facilities are accessible for kids to get shots up.
    My two cents.

I’m not talking about school coaching at all, the girls that are playing AAU ball and taking private lessons is what I’m talking about, and like Coach Schu mentioned in youth sports. If a High School coach is teaching and breaking down the shot, it’s too late.

A HS coach should be able to see if a shooter is struggling and make adjustments.
Little Dribblers in this area is the most popular youth basketball in this area and the leagues do not train the coaches, so you end up with a bunch of moms and dads teaching form shooting completely wrong. Then most private lessons focus so much attention on ball handling and getting to the rim and you get scorers from this and not shooters!

I wasn't implying that it's an excuse you were making, just a bad excuse for anyone to make.  Want to shoot better?  PUT IN THE TIME/EFFORT necessary.  Not just shots.  Proper shots.  Practice doesn't make perfect practice makes permanent.  You have to practice doing the right thing.

I think it can be agreed upon that each of these young ladies listed have "put in the work" that oldschool2 has described, and they deserve the recognition for that work. I am sure there are some more that should be listed also, as these type of lists always omit worthy player(s).
More global theories on why things aren't as good as they could be are harder to figure out, as there are more moving pieces involved as you move out from putting the work in as an individual, to putting the work in as a part of a larger unit (i.e. team, school, community, etc.).
Thank you to the coaches, parents, and other mentors that have supported these young ladies, and all the other young ladies that play girls basketball. It could not be done at ANY level without their efforts.

2 Shooters that have been overlooked are Jayda Argumon and Shannon Whitehead from Woodville.  Whitehead has unlimited range with her 3 pter and Argumon has the ability to shoot the mid range as well as the 3 Ball with an absolute pure shot.

Not being taught by who?  If a high school basketball player is counting on learning how to shoot during the months of Oct-Feb from their school coach.. then they might as well not even worry about it.  Junior high coaches can teach form shooting, ball handling, court awareness, pivoting (IMPORTANT), and other things.. but it can't stop when season is over and honestly it should've began long before junior high sports.  I hate youth sports but camps are great.  Either way, it is impossible to become a good shooter at basketball practice alone.

I don't think that its not being taught - every coach I know teaches shooting.  it is more about girls in this area don't get in the gym during the off season and work to become great shooters.   During the season is not the time for this - it has to be done in the off season.    The problem is much deeper than how coaches are teaching or not teaching.       I think it has much more to do with what is emphasized by the school, the media, the parents, lil dribbles programs etc.    I would bet everyone of the girls mentioned above has put in some serious time in the off-season shooting.

The question that you people who love this game so much are missing is. Why do you think one team is allowed to “stall“? Well I’ll answer it for you. It’s 100% because the opponent refuses to play man to man defense. “Stall ball” would be obsolete without teams sitting in zones. Since we want to outlaw “stall ball” should we outlaw zones as well??? So who do we blame for “stall ball” the offense or the defense? Before you judge someone please become knowledgeable of what you are talking about.
