  4. I'm on your side in this one Fack.  A lot of kids think that just their 12-15 at bats on the weekend is good enough to keep them going and to be on top of their game, definately not the case.  I remember when my group of guys were playing together all those years, it was Coach Stones full practice, then an hour of extra hitting at Josh Stinsons house, then our Babe Ruth games in between.  Then the weekend rolled around and we played 4 or 5 games for select ball.  As you mentioned, just monitor the amount of innings and pitches thrown during the week and you should be fine.  Let the mid week games be your bullpen and preparation for your weekend.  I love select ball and the level of competition that it brings to the table for the advanced kids and as they get older they get the exposure they need.  On the flip side, I think that all of those same kids should be playing their local league ball.  Its a more relaxed atmosphere for quality work and fine tuning.  It also gives kids a chance to make a good run at a world series and to make a little history for our local leagues.  It also bothers me having to see all of our local little leagues or pony leagues have to combine with all of the other leagues from other towns just to be able to put together a league for kids to play.  There are kids out there that just want to have some fun with their buds, not trying to earn a starting spot on their highschool team or a college scholarship, they just want to play ball because they love the game and I hate those boys not having a place to play.  I know I was just reitterating some of the things you had said, but definately on the same page.
  5. congratulations to reggie wilson, austin stone, and amir jalali for being named as pre-season High Honorable Mention Rawlings All Americans.  This is a huge honor and we are very proud here in southeast texas to be represented by such athletes, and more importantly, such great people!  Keep up the hard work, you young men have a bright future ahead of you!  A thank you goes out to the great parents of these young men also!
  6. Nobody says that Stone and the others are going to get drafted out of highschool.  They are draft prospects, with Stone having the most upside in District 20-4a for sure.  Not saying hes THE best player, but as far as projectability among the scouts, he is exactly what they look for.  I do not  know all of the others listed but know a lot of them, not saying they arent prospects, but from the ones i know of on the list, he definately has the most "upside"
  7. Coaches and parents should remember that velocity is not always the answer.  Fast and violent wind ups and mechanics open the door for bad timing, balance and injury.  You must be in control of your body at all times.  With young kids, as well as older, a smooth, well-timed and balanced delivery is the key to success.  In this area, to much emphasis is being put on "how hard we can throw" at a young age, directly resulting in injury.  Mechanics should be put first.  As kids grow, they will fill out, become stronger, and thats when the velocity will increase naturally because they already have the foundation of proper technique.  In regards to the curveball, you do not need it at a young age.  There are ways to make the ball "wiggle" without throwing the curveball, slider etc., you just need to learn it from someone who knows how to teach it properly.  Take a big leaguer for example.  Watch Justin Verlander when he has his best outings, he is 92-95 hitting spots and at the knees.  Even though he can throw 100+ whenever he wants, thats usually when he gets hurt.  He tries to put everything he has behind it, his mechanics get out of sync, the ball elevates and thats when he gets hurt.  Why do you think Maddox, Glavine, Moyer, Pettite, Lee, Hammels, Haladay etc. have long lasting and successful careers without the over-powering fastball?  Because they have proper mechanics and location, location, location!  Remember, you can only become the best pitcher you can be when you realize what kind of pitcher you are.  If we dont have that mid-90's fastball or that cooperstown breaking ball, we have to maximize what we have with location, and we will have just as much or more success than those that do.  As parents and coaches, lets keep all of the youths best interest at heart and provide a promising future for them!  We just opened our doors to our state of the art facility here in Port Neches.  Athletes Sports Training, where all of our trainers have collegiate or professional experience.  Bryan Bost, Allen Harrington, Brian Sanchez, Jay Stone, Josh Gray, Justin Walker, Lauren Parker (softball) just to name a few.  If you would like to see what we have to offer as far as training, you are more than welcome to sit in on a session and let us know what you think.  We hope to see you and your Athlete very soon!

  8. Usually its the dad trying to live the dream through the kids and think that a trophy at ford park is an olympic medal.  They for 1 shouldnt be throwing curveballs or sliders, especially from someone who doesnt know the correct way to throw it. 2 they ARE too young at 10.  Theres ways to make the ball move without the twisting and all the things that people think they know but really dont.  Mechanics and fundamentals is what should be being established at that age.  That is what keeps the young ones healthy throughout their career and gives them the best chance to succeed in this game.
