1. Bobcat,   Were you able to attend this game?  If so, shoot me a quick PM and give me your views of how the game went.  From the boxscores, some of the Orangefield girls had a lot of steals.  Just want an "orange and white" point of view.
 2.
How many seniors does LC-M have this year?
LCM's roster is dominated by juniors this year.  If I'm not mistaken, I think LCM has 4 seniors on the roster.  Although players could change at anytime...probably 2 seniors on the "starting five".
 3.

88, I don't know Coach Riojas but I have heard nothing but good things about him and was impressed with the progress he made in his first season.  Hopefully, Mustang baseball is back on the rise.
After a very long period of no discipline and no fundamentals, the baseball program is headed in the right direction. Not only is coach addressing these two issues but many more.
If Coach Riojas could just find an alumni stud that showed interest in the Mustang baseball program they'd be well on their way!  ;D  ;) Good luck to Mustang Baseball this season!

 6.
HJ by as many as they want, just like the scrimmage!
HJ pulls off the win, but not "exactly" like the scrimmage.  ;)   The outcome of this game could have gone either way and LCM is showing some signs of becoming a good team.  HJ is always a solid team that brings plenty of pressure and one of the highlights for LCM is that overall, they did a good job of handling it.   #10 for HJ (sorry no name) shined for the Hawks knocking down several 3's when it counted.  LCM had a couple of chances down the stretch with HJ missing the front end of 1 and 1's late in the game, but LCM couldn't convert in a hectic last 20 seconds. Even though a loss is a loss by 2 or by "as many they want", hopefully the Bears will use this to continue to get better.
 7.

Lumberton  just got even younger. Coach Gohlson just pulled up a Freshman to the varsity.  Last year this team was 10-17. If he can turn that around to 17-10 it would be a great move in the right direction. I doubt that any team in this area is working harder right now to improve. This new coach is really getting after it, with practice like we have not seen in Lumberton for a while!
That is a pretty big statement.... I am sure Central , Orangefield , HJ and woodville practice pretty hard....
I'm sure this sentence just didn't come out like it was planned.  (hopefully).   What I DOUBT is that ANY team in the area is working just enough to stay where they are.
Why kill the thread?  This is a legitimate question and topic, just let the moderators monitor it to make sure it doesn't get out of hand.  The question is "Is this the beginning of the end of the Hooks era?"  Coach Hooks has been coaching for many years and this will ALWAYS be a question to answer after each season whether there is turmoil or not. I'm sure Hooks loves to coach or he wouldn't have hung in there so long, but the real question is "How long does Hooks feel like fighting all of the surrounding issues outside of the X's and O's".  The scary part for wos is that if the fans feel that the school board and officials are making bad decisions and overriding what Hooks wants (after all the things he has done for the school)...then what do you think things will be like when Hooks retires and the board "hand picks" who they want to replace him?  Everyone seems to have their own opinion of who the heir apparent will be, but the board has the ultimate responsibility of recommending a coach to the Superintendent. Earlier in this thread someone finished their post with the sentence "Everything is fine in Mustang land" (or something to that effect) Well, just because you say something over and over doesn't necessarily make it true.
Ditto...that goes both ways!  I'm sure these same conversations were being discussed after we didn't make the playoffs after our late '80s run.  Then, we redeemed ourselves in 2000.  And before anyone says we lost in 2000...I tell you what, I will take an appearance in the State Finals than to never make it there to begin with.  I find it hilarious that most true Mustang fans are satisfied with how our boys play and most outsiders are the unhappy ones.   Coach Hooks is not going anywhere for a while.  The well hasn't run dry and will not for a while.  Believe it or not, there will be enough parents who are willing to stay in the district and not high-tale it over to LCM for their "education system".  Our district is improving academically.  As far as some of our other problems, they are no different than those at the LCMs, BCs, or any other district in the state of Texas or probably U.S. for that matter.  To everyone "concerned" about Coach Hook's, we appreciate all of your thoughts, time and efforts.   ;)
::)
 9.
LCM was missing alot of girls in volleyball at the scrimmage.....
The volleyball girls are back and have had a chance to regain a little of their basketball legs. (How ever much a week or so allows). I think LCM will show a lot more fight than the earlier scrimmage.
 10.
Having some Native American blood in me, I'm proud of the fact that my school uses the team name "Indians" with such respect and reverence. We were given the blessing of the Cherokee Nation because of our "Tradition of Excellence" and the "Honor, Pride, and Tradition" we held to be synonymous with the name. We're all Indians. That's the unifying factor among the people of Port Neches and Groves and those that come from these communities, and it's a source of pride. "Indians" is more than just a name.
Nice sentiments and I don't really disagree with you, but I'm not sure all of that fluff will hold up in a court of law if it comes down to it.
 11.
What does WOS pay?  I'm betting the list wouldn't be as long and impressive as you might think.  They have some things going against them.  3A school Academic problems Dwindling enrollment Screwed up school board Pay? Orange don't offer the same things as the Austin area, DFW, or Houston The list would maybe be long, but I don't think there would be lots of big time, proven coaches out there want this job.
Agreed.  There won't be many "big names" scrambling to a 3A school.
 12.
On the Indian side, I find the whole debate politically correct nonsense. I suppose if a team mascot was the "Evil Indian People" then I would have more sympathy. The problem is that a school's mascot is a revered object, rather than an object of disdain. Therefore, to suggest that a school has an Indian mascot because it hates Indians (excuse me, Native Americans) is complete nonsense. You will never convince me that FSU has done anything but endorse the spirit of the Seminole tribe. To take that away would be an insult to not only FSU but also the entire Seminole population. The same can be said for PN-G. There is no lack of respect for the American Indian in Port Neches. As for schools changing their names...why do they always come up with a stupid name? The fans of St. John's should sue the NCAA for sticking them with a stupid mascot. In fact, we should sue because the word storm could bring back bad hurricane memories. And, as hurricane victims, we don't find such references funny. Unfortunately, teams are now caving and more will in the near future. I wish they wouldn't. I would love to see a school truly stand up to this ridiculous attack on brain cells and say to heck with the NCAA/UIL, etc. I fully expect PN-G to give way in a few years from continual outside pressure. When they do, I hope they call themselves the "Nosey Administrators". As for the Rebel mascot. I have less sympathy here because, as I already stated, a mascot is a symbolic object of respect and admiration by a school. In the Indian situation; that fact alone proves that their is no underlying hatred/anger toward American Indians. However, for Rebels, it means that the Rebel cause and all that the Rebel (Southern Rebellion) stood for is being celebrated. I do respect the "States Rights" side of the argument when it comes to the Civil War but I do not buy into the argument that the Civil War was not about slavery. It was. Most importantly, it was about the States right to have slaves and keep slavery alive. Had it been about the States right to sell cucumbers along the side of the road then I might be more sympathetic. However, as it stands, I am glad the South lost the Civil War and slavery is no longer practiced in this country. It is a blight on our history and, although there are heroic tales from the Southern side of the Civil War (censored Dowling for instance) I simply cannot endorse a Rebel mascot (Confederate flag included) anymore than I could endorse a swastika on a football helmet. However, I will leave it up to the schools and their fans to decide the fate of said mascots. I should add that I also would not like a pro-Union mascot due to the horrendous atrocities committed by "Yankee" soldiers during their occupation of the Southern US (starving families, burning communities, raping, etc....two wrongs don't make a right). As for Lady anything....could care less...will leave that one up to the lady 'ballers'. Lastly...I am a descendant of the Choctaw nation on both sides of my family. In addition, I am a true heir to the Confederacy, in that a number of my ancestors fought for the Confederacy in the "War of Northern Aggression". I also support Evadale and Ole Miss for standing up for their beliefs but, unlike the "Indian" schools, their argument holds little weight. Whereas the Indian mascot fan can simply argue that they are giving respect to the mascot, the Rebel mascot has to somehow convince everyone that they do not respect the spirit of their mascot in order to win the argument....just doesn't work. Just my two cents...don't hate me(ha)!!!
Good post and some heartfelt opinions.
LCM looked surprisingly good considering 7 players only had one day of practice after the volleyball season ended.  There were a lot of red faces and a few gasps for air, but all in all a positive start.    There seems to be a little more running involved in basketball than volleyball.  ;D ;)    The Bears will get a tough test Tuesday when Shackbully brings his daughter and the girls from HJ to town.
 16. As much as I'd like to see BC win...I think Cleveland has way too much size for BC to contend with.  Cleveland by a couple of TD's.

 18.
Did anyone else have scrimmages today? HJ played a shorthanded LCM team and looked pretty good at times.... Still alot of work to do though..
The HJ/LCM scrimmage I felt was good for both teams.  HJ did look good and have a lot of quality players that fill their varsity roster.  Good height and rebounding from the posts combined with constant pressuring guards. Even though LCM still has 7 varsity players tied up in the volleyball playoffs, it was a great opportunity for this group to get in some quality minutes against a good opponent.   Nice facilities at HJ!  The gym and campus were spotless!
